FAQs

  • Q: Can the Hemovac drain be reused?
    • A: No, the Hemovac drain is for single-patient use only and should be discarded after use. Reuse can lead to complications and device failure.

Product Description

  • The PVC Closed Wound Drainage System is a disposable, hollow portable device used for closed wound drainage.
  • All items are supplied sterile and are for single-patient use.
  • Clear drain reservoir walls with volume approximations facilitate the examination of the drainage fluid.
  • The reservoir tubing is inserted into the reservoir unit Suction Port which is equipped with an anti-reflux valve to preclude retrograde flow of drain fluid.

Specification

  • Hemovac drain sizes available in 25ml, 200ml, 400ml, 500ml, 800ml
  • Drain tube sizes available in Fr7, Fr10, Fr12, Fr14, Fr15, Fr16, Fr18, Fr19

Hemovac drains Indications:

  • The hemovac drain is a collection system commonly used for drains after surgery, with the options to operate one or two catheters simultaneously.

Warnings and Precautions

  1. Drains, Trocars, and Reservoirs are for single use only and should be discarded after use.
  2. Drains or draining tubes should not be handled with any instruments. Sharp objects can lead to tearing or weakening and breakage of the drain.
  3. Do not use if the package has been opened or if the seal has been compromised.
  4. To allow for easy drain removal; the drain and tubing should not be curled, stretched, or sutured into place. Drains should be placed and removed with care avoiding fast movements and applying slow and steady pressure.
  5. Utilize sterile technique when making drain connections.
  6. During drain placement, take care not to cut, tear, or damage the drain as this can lead to tearing or complete breakage.
  7. Careful attention should be directed to make sure the drains do not clog or become occluded when they are still in use. If occlusion occurs, suction directly to the drain itself can be administered to relieve the occlusion. The reservoir should not be allowed to fill, this can lead to an increased likelihood of backflow contamination.
  8. All drainage holes must be located within the wound site creating an air-tight seal to maintain vacuum. An air-tight seal must be maintained to prevent the reservoir from filling with air which can increase the likelihood of backflow.
  9. Do not sterilize the product.
  10. The removal wound drain and components have not been evaluated for use with other Wound Drainage Systems on the market. This system and its components are only to be used with the components listed on this IFU.
  11. Product graduation markings on the reservoir are approximations only, they are not to be used to take measurements of draining fluids.

Contraindication:

  1. Do not suture through, cut, nick, tear, or damage the drain as this may lead to breakage.
  2. Do not select the volume of the vacuum suction drain-source without the professional’s guidance.
  3. Repeated application of this vacuum drainage system is not recommended.

Hemovac drain complications:

  • Possible side effects include infection and inflammation.
  • Before the surgery, the patient should be informed of such risks and complications that may occur depending on the patient’s degree of intolerance to any object placed into the body.
  • A drain left in a patient for any period allows for tissue ingrowth around and into the drain which can cause breakage or discomfort upon drain removal.

Drain Connection/Drainage Placement:

Place drain in the wound site, ensuring that all holes, channels, or ducts are located within the wound drain site. On drains marked with indicators pull completely through the insertion site until the initial set of indicators appear at the skin surface.

  1. Attach the drain to the Y-connector tubing.
  2. Attach the Y-connector tubing to the accordion drain evacuator.
  3. Firmly compress the reservoir to evacuate the air.
  4. Release evacuator – the closed wound drainage system is now active.

Disposal:

  • Please refer to your hospital policy for the correct disposal of this device and its contents.

Risks associated with rescue:

  • The removal wound drainage system devices are not validated for reuse.
  • The device design does not facilitate cleaning and can result in an increased infection if not properly decontaminated.
  • The device may not perform as intended by the manufacturer if reused, resterilized, or decontaminated.
  • Reuse of the product may result in material degradation resulting in device failure.
