THE OM SYSTEM GUIDE TO PHOTOGRAPHING
MOTHER NATURE’S

WILD SIDE
FEATURING TIPS AND TECHNIQUES FROM OM SYSTEM EXPERTS.

START TAKING PHOTOS OF ANIMALS THAT PEOPLE WILL GO WILD OVER.

The world is full of beautiful, exotic wildlife waiting to be photographed. This handy guide will help you do that. Whether you’re getting started or you’ve been shooting wildlife for years, you’ll learn something new. OM SYSTEM experts will show you why their cameras of choice for photographing wildlife is the OM Series.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE.

First things first: You can’t take a great wildlife shot unless you know where to find wildlife. Here are some accessible places that are ideal for learning how to start capturing great shots.

TOP PLACES TO TAKE WILDLIFE PHOTOS:
Your local zoo is a good place to practice. Zoo animals love performing for visitors, and that means a chance to catch a meaningful moment like a yawn or a lion licking a cub.
You can get great shots close to home. There are many wildlife refuges, wetland districts and national parks in the country. Start exploring.
To get the best photos of wildlife, you have to know where to find them. Check out animal tracking websites to help you understand the migratory patterns of certain species. It helps you be in the right place at the right time. For example, fall mating season is a great time to photograph moose and elk.
There are plenty of wildlife organizations that have insider knowledge. Call one up and ask to tag along during an outing. Offer to shoot photos for their website.

LET US HELP YOU TA AWESOME WILDLIFE

  1. KNOW YOUR SUBJECT.
Use the Internet to pull together as much research as you can about an animal’s behavior so you’ll be in the best position to take the best shots. It would be wise to have a pair of OM SYSTEM PRO Binoculars on hand for spotting and preparation.

  2. BE PATIENT.
You might have to wait all day for a single split second of action. But when you get the shot, it will all be worth it.

  3. BE READY.
Weathersealed gear like OM-1 Series cameras and M.Zuiko PRO lenses let you focus on your subject and ignore the rain and snow.

  4. BE PREPARED.
Carry two cameras: one with a wide-angle zoom lens and the other with a long zoom lens. You won’t fumble around to switch a lens and miss your shot.

  5. FAST LENSES.
They’re critical for wildlife photography. You’re often shooting in the early morning or late in the day, and that usually means low light situations. You need wide aperture lenses that perform great in dimly lit settings.
USE A FAST UHS-II CARD. It needs at least 300 MB/s speed. Slow, unreliable memory cards are a waste of money because they’re a sure way to miss a split- second shot.

  6. SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF.
Make sure the batteries are charged, your memory cards are formatted and the previous days’ images are downloaded. You don’t want something small to mess up a big shot.

  7. SHOOT IN RAW.
It provides approximately two additional stops of dynamic range and gives you many more options in post-production.

  8. GET PORTABLE.
Heavy DSLRs and big lenses can weigh you down and limit your mobility.

  9. The OM Series is compact, portable and helps you react quickly to wildlife.

  10. TRAVEL LIGHT.
The beauty of the OM Series is that you don’t need a tripod for daily shooting. Built-in image stabilization compensates for all types of hand movement, so you can stay more nimble and mobile.

IT’S AS IF A BUNCH OF WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS THOUGHT UP THEIR DREAM

CAMERA AND WE BUILT IT.

Think of an OM series camera as a DSLR that went on a diet, lost weight and shrunk a few sizes. OM camera and lens combinations are up to one-third the weight and half the size of a flagship DSLR. For wildlife photographers, the OM-1 series means not having to be exhausted from lugging around big lenses and a bulky body.
The OM-1 series is packed with technology to handle the challenges that come with photographing wildlife. It has an industry leading, in-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization System to compensate for camera shake and ensure sharp images in tough shooting conditions. An accurate autofocus system combined with continuous shooting speeds of up to 120 frames per second makes quick work of photographing fast-moving wildlife.
The camera is just one part of a continually expanding system with lightweight and compact lenses plus accessories. As your interest in wildlife photography — or photography in general — grows, OM SYSTEM grows with you.

ALL THE FEATURES YOU NEED TO CAPTURE WILDLIFE.

(PHOTOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING, OF COURSE.)

PROTECTS ITSELF FROM BAD WEATHER.
Lousy weather often takes you by surprise. The OM-1 Series has you covered. It’s splashproof, dustproof and freezeproof [down to 14˚F / -10˚C]. There’s no need to carry protective gear, so you can focus on keeping an eye on wildlife instead of watching out for your camera.

COMPACT WITH SUPERB IMAGE QUALITY.
Do you really want to walk through woods, mountain trails or a park looking for wildlife while carrying big lenses and a bulky camera? Let the OM Series set you free. Its compact body and small, lightweight lenses deliver faster performance than any DSLR camera and lens. You’ll have greater freedom of movement to capture better photos.

WILDLIFE CAN MOVE FAST. KEEP UP.
The speed of the OM-1 Series blows away DSLR cameras. You can capture up to an astounding 120 frames per second (fps) in S-AF and 50 fps in C-AF using the silent electronic shutter. All ideal for rapid-fire shooting when you need it. You are also able to effortlessly change the autofocus point during sequential shooting by simply moving the 8 direction multi-selector.

NEVER MISS A SHOT.
Imagine spotting a cheetah that’s ready to start running. Our Pro Capture feature helps you nail the perfect shot. Press the shutter button halfway to start buffering a running series of 20MP resolution images. Once you see the precise moment you want to capture, fully press the shutter button to instantly record that image, plus up to 70 previous frames.

TECHNOLOGY HAS REPLACED THE TRIPOD.
Leave your tripod behind with in-body 5-Axis Image Stabilization. This industry leading system adjusts for all types of camera movement to provide up to 8.5 shutter speed steps of compensation. It’s ideal for capturing sharp handheld shots in super-telephoto or low light settings. You’ll have the freedom to react to fast-moving subjects.

PRECISE AUTOFOCUSING.
Photographing an animal moving at top speed requires incredibly fast and accurate autofocus. That’ s why the
OM-1 Mark II has 1,053 point all Cross Quad Pixel AF for high-precision focusing. Every point is cross-type, enabling detection of vertical and horizontal lines for unmatched accuracy. It’s advanced autofocusing technology that ensures you’ll capture it all, anytime, anywhere.
