TURCK IM12-AI01 Isolating Power Transducer User Guide
For your safety
Intended use
The devices are designed only for use in industrial areas.
The isolating transducers in the IM12-AI01… series transfer the analog
measured signals galvanically isolated. HART 2-wire transducers, as well as
active and passive HART 2-wire transmitters can be used on devices in non-Ex
areas. The devices are suitable for operation in Zone 2.
The devices also enable the creation of safety-related applications up to and
including SIL2 (high and low demand per IEC 61508, hardware fault tolerance
HFT = 0).
DANGER
These instructions do not provide any information on use in safety-related
applications.
Danger to life due to misuse!
- When using the device in safety-related systems: Observe the instructions contained in the associated safety manual without fail.
The devices must only be used as described in these instructions. Any other use is not in accordance with the intended use. Turck accepts no liability for any resulting damage.
General safety instructions
- The device must only be mounted, installed, operated, parameterized and maintained by trained and qualified personnel.
- The devices fulfill exclusively the EMC requirements for industrial applications and are not suitable for use in residential areas.
- For the power supply, take external measures to prevent the rated volume being exceeded by more than 40 % as the result of interference.
Notes on Ex protection
- The device must never be used in the Ex area without a suitable protective housing.
- Observe national and international regulations for explosion protection.
- When using the device in Ex circuits, the user must also have additional knowledge of explosion protection (EN 60079-14 etc.).
- Only use the device within the permissible operating and ambient conditions (see approval data and Ex approval specifications).
Requirements for ATEX approval for use in Zone 2
- Mount the device in an enclosure in accordance with EN 60079-0 with a degree of protection of at least IP54 as per IEC/EN 60529.
- Only use the device in environments that do not exceed pollution degree 2.
- Only connect and disconnect circuits if no voltage is applied.

Device overview
See fig. 1: Front view,

Functions and operating modes
The isolating transducers are equipped with 4…20-mA input circuits and 4…20-mA output circuits (as source or sink), or 1…5 V (source). Input signals are transmitted galvanically isolated and 1:1 in the 3.8 mA…20.5 mA range without impairment. In addition, digital signals can also be transmitted bidirectionally in accordance with the HART protocol. The devices with splitter operation display the input signal at the input [E1] at outputs [A1] and [A2]. Digital HART-signals are only transmitted to output [A1]. The devices with a Power Bridge connector also offer the option of transmitting a collective fault message.
Installing
DANGER
Potentially explosive atmosphere
Risk of explosion through spark ignition!
When used in zone 2:
- Mounting and connection are only permissible if there is no potentially explosive atmosphere present.
- Mount the device in an enclosure in accordance with EN 60079-0 with a degree of protection of at least IP54.
- When mounting ensure that the permissible operating temperature of the device is not exceeded even in unfavorable ambient conditions.
Mounting on a DIN rail without a Power Bridge connector
- Attach the device in accordance with fig. 3.
Mounting on a DIN rail with a Power Bridge connector
- Attach the device in accordance with fig. 4.
Connection
Refer to fig. 8 and 9 for the numbering of the terminals.
-
Connect the devices with screw terminals as shown in fig. 6.
-
Connect the devices with spring-type terminals as shown in fig. 7.
-
Select the required mode (source/sink) according to the corresponding connector, see “Wiring Diagrams”.
