Introduction

This manual provides information on how to safely install and perform maintenance on the Toshiba TEFC 3Ø Motor Oil Mist Lubrication System.

The information within this manual applies to the Toshiba TEFC 3Ø Motor with anti-friction bearings only.

Oil mist is an aerosol vapor comprised of an oil and air mixture; one- to-20,000, respectively, is typical.

The high-pressure mist is passed through an orifice (Reclassifier) that increases the speed of the oil/air flow and combines the smaller oil particles before the mist is passed through to the bearing housing.

The Oil Mist Lubrication System is the preferred lubrication system of the Hydrocarbon Processing Industry. This is because the system is hermetically sealed, has no moving parts, and uses only new oil (no recirculation) — this results in significantly reduced bearing failures.

To maximize the abilities of the Oil Mist Lubrication System, a working familiarity with this manual is required. This manual has been prepared for the Oil Mist Lubrication System installer and maintenance personnel.

This manual may also be used as a reference guide. With this in mind, use this manual to develop a familiarity with the Oil Mist Lubrication System before attempting to install any elements of the system, transfer oil, or perform system maintenance.

This manual provides information on how to safely install and maintain the oil mist system. The information
provided in this manual is applicable to the Oil Mist Lubrication System only.

This manual provides information on the various features and functions of this highly-efficient cost-saving system, including

• Reclassifier Installation,
• Oil Supply Management, and
• Frame Sizes/Associated Flow Rate Specifications.

Included is a section on general safety instructions that describe the warning labels and symbols that are used on the device and throughout the manual. Read the manual completely before installing, operating, performing maintenance, or disposing of this equipment.

This manual should be considered a permanent part of the equipment and should be readily available for reference and review.

Safety Precautions

Qualified Personnel

Installation, operation, and maintenance shall be performed by Qualified Personnel Only. A Qualified Person is one that has the skills and knowledge relating to the construction, installation, operation, and maintenance of the electrical equipment and has received safety training on the hazards involved (Refer to the latest edition of NFPA 70E for additional safety requirements).

Qualified Personnel shall:

• Have carefully read the entire manual.
• Be familiar with the construction and function of the equipment being monitored and the hazards involved.
• Be able to recognize and properly address hazards associated with the application.
• Be trained and authorized to safely energize, de-energize, ground, lock out/tag out circuits and equipment, and clear faults in accordance with established safety practices.
• Be trained in the proper care and use of protective equipment such as safety shoes, rubber gloves, hard hats, safety glasses, face shields, flash clothing, etc., in accordance with established safety practices.

• Only Qualified Personnel should install this equipment.
• Turn off and lock out/tag out all power sources before proceeding to connect the power wiring to the equipment.

Installation Precautions

The installation, operation, maintenance and disposal of the equipment shall be done in accordance with this manual and all applicable national, state and local codes.

High voltages and rotating parts of electrical machinery can cause fatal or serious injury and/or property damage if improperly installed or serviced.

Lock out all power prior to servicing, performing maintenance, or repairs on the equipment.

Do not by-pass or render safeguards or protective safety devices inoperative.

The machine must be electrically grounded in accordance with all applicable electrical codes.

Comply with all applicable national, state and local codes. Adhere to all applicable ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, OSHA, NEC (NFPA 70) and NFPA 70E
Maintenance Procedures pertaining to the installation and operation of polyphase motors.

Ensure that steps are taken to protect all personnel from possible injury (e.g., install guards, post warning signs, etc.).

Provide proper safeguards for personnel against accidental contact of personnel or clothing with rotating parts.

Avoid extended exposure to equipment with noise levels above OSHA code 29 CFR part 1910.95 (85 dbA and above over an eight hour period).

Do not modify Explosion Proof motors. Modifying an Explosion Proof Motor may result in the voiding of the UL Listing and possibly preventing the motor from containing an explosion.

The shaft key must be fully secured before motor is energized.

Upon completion of the motor installation or maintenance, replace or install all guards and covers.

Enhanced precautions are required if using the Oil Mist system on a motor that uses automatic thermal protection. The system must be completely disabled when an automatic start up could result in destruction of property or injury to personnel.

Oil Installation and Maintenance

Installation

The motor bearings will receive a light coat of oil for testing at the factory and for subsequent shipping.

Upon receipt of the motor, the oil-mist system must be connected.

For motors labeled Provisions Only for Oil Mist Lubrication or Oil Mist Ready, purge all oil and/or grease from the bearings.

Remove the oil inlet and oil outlet pipe plugs from the bearing brackets, caps, or remove the extension tubes from the drive end and non-drive ends of the motor.

Install the specified reclassifier to the top connection.

Connect the oil recovery trap to the bottom opening.

Oil Supply

The lubricating oil should be rust- and oxidation-inhibited, stray-mist suppressed, and manufactured in accordance with established commercial standards and practices.

The viscosity shall be ISO VG 68 or higher, per the latest revision of ASTM D 2422.

The flash point shall be 350° F (177° C) or above.

The pour point shall be -15° F (-26° C) or above.

See Table 1 on page 3 for oil recommendations.

The oil type and misting unit must be compatible.

Storage

Motors that are labeled Provisions Only for Oil Mist
Lubrication have bearings that are packed with
grease. The storage procedures are the same as
those for motors with grease-lubricated anti-friction
bearings.

Motors that are labeled Oil Mist Ready have bearings that are protected for temporary storage by a corrosion inhibitor. ff extended storage (greater then 3 months) or if stored outdoors, the units should be connected to the oil mist system while in storage.

If this is not possible, at three-month intervals, the grease level should be checked and refilled as required.

At each three-month check the shaft should be rotated by hand five revolutions minimum to re-distribute the bearing grease.

The bearing grease must be removed at the time of connection to the oil mist system.
