Installation Guide [pdf]: T9 Smart Thermostat Installation Guide

How does the T9/10 differ from other brands’ smart thermostats with

sensors?

Not all sensors are created equal; the new T-Series smart room sensors have a thermostat-to-sensor range up to 200 feet.

The T9/T10 smart room sensors monitor motion/people detection in rooms, enabling the thermostat to automatically adjust the temperature when a room becomes occupied, which isn’t available in all other comparable products. This is important because the thermostat knows which room to prioritize when.

The one-touch priority adjustments on the thermostat, Honeywell Home App, or with a voice assistant (Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa) flex with your life.

The Smart Thermostat’s intuitive touch display allows you to scroll menus right on the thermostat, personalizing your controls, and is very similar to the mobile app experience.

The T9 Smart Thermostat is has wire-sensing technology and can determine if each wire is correctly connected on each end of the wire.

The thermostat can configure itself – just answer a few simple questions to get started. The included C-Wire adapter provides compatibility in homes that don’t have a C-Wire present at the thermostat, so it’s compatible with most homes.

What does the new T9 and T10 Smart Thermostat consist of?

The product features a Smart Thermostat, wireless smart room sensors and the Honeywell Home app. You can purchase the thermostat and sensors separately or bundled. Together, they effortlessly deliver comfort when and where it’s needed. The T-Series smart thermostats connect to the smart room sensors via a proprietary 900 MHz wireless radio that can connect to the thermostat up to a 200 foot range providing a reliable connection to monitor temperature and humidity.

Do I need a c-wire to install the T9 Smart Thermostat?

No, the T9 Smart Thermostat comes with a c-wire adapter so it’s compatible with homes that do not have a c-wire.

What’s the difference between the T9 Smart Thermostat and the T10 Pro

Smart Thermostat?

The T10 Pro is sold through our professional HVAC installers. It offers additional controls that enable HVAC contractors to tailor the thermostat to your specific equipment’s capabilities. The T10 also offers the ability to control humidifiers, dehumidifiers and ventilation. It’s installed by a professional and gives the installer a broader range of installation options to synchronize all those indoor air quality devices.

Which smart home apps are compatible with the T9 Smart Thermostat and T10

Pro Smart Thermostat?

Currently only Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant can view and control both the thermostat and sensors.
HomeKit, IFTTT, SmartThings and Cortana will allow you to change setpoints on your thermostat, but cannot view the sensor readings at this time.

How many sensors can I add to my T9 or T10 Smart Thermostat?

You can add up to 20 smart sensors.

Why does my T9/T10 Thermostat fail to power on?

Check your wiring to see if you have a C-wire. If you do not see a wire in the C terminal, refer to your Installation Guide / C-Wire Adaptor Guide to install using the c-wire adapter. Then, reset your thermostat by either gently pulling it off the wall near the base of the thermostat, allowing for one minute to pass, then placing it back on the wall, or by turning the service switch on your furnace/AC system off for 30 seconds. The device should recover within about 10 minutes.

Do the smart room sensors work with other Honeywell Home thermostats?

Smart Room Sensors work only with the T9 and T10 Smart Thermostats.

What does room prioritization mean and how does it work using the T9/T10

thermostat?

You can select which rooms/smart room sensors you want your thermostat to focus on (which rooms it should measure). For example, during nap time, you may want the nursery room prioritized so the baby sleeps at the ideal temperature. In this case, you can set the priority via a simple voice command; or those rooms are prioritized when people are detected in them. You can even select multiple rooms to be prioritized, like all 3 of the bedrooms, and the thermostat will heat or cool the home based on an average of those rooms.

What is the difference between T9/T10 Pro Smart Room Sensors and a zoned

HVAC system?

The T9 and T10 Pro Smart Thermostat uses up to 20 wireless sensors to read temperatures in multiple rooms of your home. Based on your preferences, the thermostat can read from, and average, these multiple sensors and the thermostat. The T9 and T10 Smart Thermostat will calculate the average of the temperatures detected in all selected or active rooms to deliver the best temperature to your whole home. In this way, the T9 and T10 Smart Thermostats work with the sensors to make you feel closer to your desired temperature, wherever you are in the home.

While the T9 and T10 thermostat can better fine-tune your comfort in your home, it’s important to distinguish that no thermostat alone, regardless of sensors, can maintain separate temperatures in different rooms without air dampers or smart vents. Honeywell Home provides a true zoning solution that can be purchased through a professional contractor.

For homes that already utilize a zoning solution, such as a zone control board or duct dampers, Smart Room Sensors can still help further increase comfort and savings by providing a more accurate reading of the temperature in each zone. A T9 or T10 Smart Thermostat would be required for each zone being controlled, and each thermostat will require its own sensors, based on your desired level of control. Smart Room Sensors cannot connect with more than one thermostat.

7. Turn off your mobile phone’s cellular/mobile data. (This ensures that the connection and registration app data goes to Honeywell / Resideo via the same route as thermostat data)

8. Turn on your mobile phone’s Wi-Fi.

Connect your phone to the same network that you’re connecting your thermostat to. (Typically, your home wi-fi network. If you are attempting to connect /register the thermostat via a mobile hotspot, your mobile phone and thermostat should connect to the same hotspot network)

9. Make sure the device you are connecting is on the same Wi-Fi network as the mobile device.

“Forget” all other networks, and turn off mobile data.
OR
Turn on “Airplane Mode” and then turn on Wi-Fi and connect to the same Wi-Fi network the thermostat will be connected to.
10. Make sure the network is a standard home network and does not require logging in from a web page, such as a guest network or business network.

11. Make sure you’re connecting to a 2.4 gigahertz (GHz) network with its own network name. (Only the T9/T10 thermostats, C2 Camera, and Smart Home Security base station are compatible with 5GHz networks at this time)

This specifically speaks to “Dual Band” routers which support both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks.
Many of these routers will allow you to configure separate Networks to connect to on your phone or computer.
These networks must be named discretely (HomeWiFi – 2.4 and HomeWiFi – 5) in order for Honeywell Home products to connect.
12. Make sure you’re connecting directly to a router, and not a router accessory.

Examples of router accessories include repeaters and signal boosters.

13. Make sure your router hasn’t reached its max number of devices.

Routers typically can only handle a specific number of devices. Refer to your router support or Internet Service Provider for assistance.

14. Make sure your router is using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

When a router is using DHCP, it automatically assigns internet protocol (IP) addresses to each device. Honeywell connected devices work best with DHCP.

15. Make sure your router isn’t using any advanced security settings such as after-market firewalls, or connected to any network device, such as a switch or gateway which may have its own security.

Make sure Wi-Fi network is using one of the following security protocols. Other security protocols are not recommended. • OPEN • WEP PSK • WPA TKIP PSK • WPA2 AES PSK • WPA2 MIXED PSK.

16. Reset your thermostat.

Power cycle the device for 30 seconds or perform a hard reset by pressing and holding the reset button for 30 seconds. This clears short term memory. Power cycle the router for 30 seconds. This clears short term memory and resets router tasks.

Can I lock my thermostat so that no one can change the settings?

Varies by model. Refer to your thermostat manual for the Screen Lock feature.

The T9/T10, T5/T6, RTH9580WF, the RTH9585WF, and the TH9320WF (WiFi Color Touchscreen) all have a screen lock feature.

Keep in mind that the screen lock feature only blocks changes on the thermostat screen itself. Users with access to the thermostat via the Total Connect Comfort or Honeywell Home mobile apps can continue to control all functions via their app.

Why is my thermostat showing up as offline?

If you are unable to complete the setup/connection/registration process, or if your thermostat frequently loses wi-fi connection, attempt the following before reconnecting:

Power cycle the thermostat by removing it from the wall for 30 seconds. Reattach the face plate.

Turn off mobile/ cellular data on your mobile device and connect to your home Wi-Fi network. “Forget” any other Wi-Fi networks in range. (Turning on Airplane mode is also an option)

Some Android phones have an updated security feature that may not allow your phone to connect to “unsecured” Wi-Fi networks. Temporarily disable this feature via Settings – Network & Internet – Wi-Fi – Wi-Fi Preferences on your mobile device.

Attempt to connect and register the thermostat to a mobile hotspot. This allows the registration data to bypass any network security that may be causing the connection failure. Once successfully registered, a Wi-Fi Reset can be performed to move the thermostat to the home Wi-Fi network.

Advanced Steps:

If you experience inability to connect, failure to register, or frequent Wi-Fi signal loss, verify the following:

You may need assistance from your Internet Service Provider to verify/ change some settings

  • Setup a 2.4GHz Bandwidth Only network with separate SSID (Not compatible with 5GHz networks. Simultaneous 2.4 and 5GHz networks that share a name or SSID are not recommended and can cause thermostat to lose connectivity). The T9/T10 thermostats are capable of communicating on a 5Ghz wi-fi network – all other models currently only operate on the 2.4GHz bandwidth
  • Connect directly to the router signal – Not recommended for use with signal booster, satellites, or extenders.
  • Business Networks (Enterprise networks, guest networks, or networks that require logging in via a web page/portal) are not supported.
  • Gateways or Network switches can block some traffic to Honeywell / Resideo and are not supported.
  • Recommended WPA2-AES Network Security Protocol
  • DHCP Enabled – Static networks not supported
  • UPnP / P2P Enabled
  • Band-Steering Disabled

”Not Supported” refers to network configurations that may be compatible, but cannot be successfully supported by Resideo Customer Care. “Incompatible” refers to networks / configurations that the thermostat is incapable of communicating with.

Does the T9/T10 thermostat have any learning capabilities?

Yes, it has “Smart Response” and “Adaptive Recovery,” which learns how long it takes the home to heat or cool itself. For example, if you want your bedroom set to 70 degrees when you wake up at 6 am, the system knows it takes 30 minutes to heat your home, so the furnace will start heating at 5:30 am. Likewise, if you want a cool bedroom, 65 degrees, at 10 pm, the system takes in to account how long it typically takes your home to reach that point.
