Improve Siri and Dictation & Privacy

Improve Siri and Dictation allows Apple to store and have employees review a sample of audio interactions with Siri, Dictation and Translate in order to help Apple develop and improve Siri, Dictation, and other language processing features like Translate or Voice Control.

Siri and Dictation

If you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation, the audio of your interactions with Siri and Dictation may be stored on Siri servers and reviewed by Apple employees to develop and improve Siri, Dictation, and natural language processing functionality in Apple products and services. In addition to audio recordings, other Siri Data, such as computer-generated transcriptions of your requests, names of your contacts, apps installed on your devices, and location, is also used to improve Siri.

Your request history is associated with a random, device-generated identifier for six months. Your request history may include transcripts, audio for users who have opted in to Improve Siri and Dictation, and related request data, such as device specifications, performance statistics, and the approximate location of your device at the time the request was made. After six months, your request history is dissociated from the random identifier and may be retained for up to two years to help Apple develop and improve Siri, Dictation, and other language processing features like Voice Control. The small subset of requests that have been reviewed may be kept beyond two years, without the random identifier, for ongoing improvement of Siri.

If one of your Siri or Dictation interactions is selected for review, the request, as well as the response Siri provided, will be analyzed to determine accuracy and to generally improve Siri, Dictation, and natural language processing functionality in Apple products and services. Depending on the context of your request, Apple employees may review Siri Data directly relevant to the request, in order to grade the effectiveness of Siri’s response. Only Apple employees, subject to strict confidentiality obligations, are able to access audio interactions with Siri and Dictation. You can change your setting for Improve Siri and Dictation at any time. To do so, go to Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements, and tap to turn off Improve Siri & Dictation.

You can delete audio interactions associated with a random identifier and retained for six months or less by going to Settings > Siri & Search > Siri & Dictation History and tapping Delete Siri & Dictation History.

You can disable Siri and Dictation by going to Settings > General > Keyboard and tapping to turn off Enable Dictation. Then, go to Settings > Siri & Search and tap to turn off “Listen for ‘Hey Siri’” and “Press Side Button for Siri” (or “Press Home for Siri” if your iPhone has a Home button). Siri Data associated with the random identifier is deleted if you disable Siri.

Translate

If you opt in to Improve Siri and Dictation, your audio input and computer- generated transcripts of your Translate requests, associated with random, rotating, device-generated identifiers, may be stored and reviewed by Apple employees to develop and improve Siri and Dictation, Translate and natural language processing functionality in Apple products and services.

Your Translate requests may be retained for up to two years to help Apple develop and improve Siri and Dictation, and other language processing features like Translate and Voice Control. If one of your Translate interactions is selected for review, the translation request, as well as the translation response provided, will be analyzed to determine accuracy and to generally improve Siri, Dictation, Translate, and natural language processing functionality in Apple products and services. Only Apple employees, subject to strict confidentiality obligations, are able to access your Translate audio input. The small subset of your Translate interactions that have been reviewed may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement of Siri, Dictation and Translate.
