Assembling the KP128

  1. With the bolt 7 facing you, align the notch on the leg**1** with the notch on the mounting 2 as shown in **3**. Put the washer t into the wing bolt r, and then secure the leg to the KP128.
**NOTE**: Since the flat washers are very small and can be easily lost, be careful when handling them.
  • If damage to the floor is not a concern, extend the stoppers at the tip of the legs 1 and connect the anti-slip stoppers 6 to the base so that the tip of the stoppers dig into the riser or floor. To prevent damage to the floor, retract the stoppers at the legs 1 and remove the anti-slip stoppers, 6 and place a mat or carpet under the KP128 to prevent the KP128 from moving during performance. Keep removed anti-slip stoppers 6 in a safe place.

CAUTION
• Be careful of injuries when extending or retracting the stoppers at the tip of the legs 1

2. Attach your foot pedal to the KP128. Adjust the leg’s length loosening the bolts 7 so that the pad surface of the KP128 is vertical when the foot pedal is attached, and the KP128 is stable when the beater hits the pad. After the position is determined, firmly tighten the bolts 7 to secure.
* Place the underside of the foot pedal’s base directly to the floor.
CAUTION
• Be careful when removing or replacing the pedal, since the KP128 may fall over.
3. Adjust the position of the pedal and the length of the beater shaft so that the foot pedal’s beater 8 hits the patch in the center of the kick pad **9**YAMAHA KP128 DMX Electronic Drum Pad-- Adjust the
position

NOTICE

  • When storing the KP128 with the foot pedal detached, make sure to unplug the cable and set the KP128 flat. Otherwise the KP128 may fall down, which may result in damage to the cable.

Making Connections

Using a stereo phone cable 1 (included), connect the KP128’s OUTPUT jack 2 to an appropriate input jack on a DTX Series drum trigger module. Be sure to connect the L-shaped end of the cable to the KP128.

NOTICE

  • On the drum trigger module, set the corresponding pad type as a kick pad. Setting of any other pad type may have unintended consequences such as double triggering (where a single strike produces two distinct sounds). For more details, refer to the Owner’s Manual included with the drum trigger module and/or to the page for your specific product on the Yamaha website.

  • If using the KP128 as a standalone pad with no other pad connected to it, a mono phone cable can also be used to make this connection to the drum trigger module.
YAMAHA KP128 DMX Electronic Drum Pad-- Making
Connections

  • Connecting an additional pad
The PAD INPUT jack 3provided on the KP128 can be used to add an additional pad (sold separately). To do so, connect the output connector on the additional pad to the PAD INPUT jack 3 using a mono or stereo phone cable.

NOTICE

  • When connecting a drum trigger module and a KP128 having a pad connected via its PAD INPUT jack e, the most suitable jack will depend on the type of module being used. For more details, refer to the Owner’s Manual included with the drum trigger module and/or to the page for your specific product on the Yamaha website.
  • When you hit a pad connected to the PAD INPUT jack e, only the main surface (head on the snare/tom pad, or bow on the hi-hat/cymbal pad) produce sound. No sound will be produced on any other section, such as the rim or edge. In addition, special functions using the rim switch (such as choking and muting) will not supported in such a case

Adjusting the Output Level

The output level from the KP128 can be raised by turning the level adjuster q clockwise and vice-versa. Be sure to adjust this level to best suit the strength with which you strike the pad, your desired dynamic range (i.e., the difference between loudest and quietest volumes), and the type of DTX Series drum trigger module being used. If the level adjustment knob is turned all the way up but the output level is still low, raise the DTX Series Drum Trigger Module’s input level using the Gain parameter from the trigger area.

NOTICE
If playing fortissimo (ff) passages with the KP128 connected to a DTX Series drum trigger module, the gain level on the module’s trigger setup screen should be adjusted to between 90% and 95% of the displayed input level. For more details, refer to the Owner’s Manual included with the drum trigger module and/or to the page for your specific product on the Yamaha website. Excessively large output levels can have unintended consequences such as a reduced dynamic range and double triggering (where a single strike produces two distinct sounds).YAMAHA KP128 DMX Electronic Drum Pad-- Making

Adjusting the Head Tension

NOTICE
• The drum key bolts for tightening the head can be loosened while using. Each time before you play, adjust the head tension to prevent rattling and loosening of the head.
To adjust the head tension, tighten or loosen the six drum key bolts on the outside of the head in the order shown in the figure below. Make sure to tighten or loosen the drum key bolts evenly. If you tighten or loosen only one, the head tension will not be even.
YAMAHA KP128 DMX Electronic Drum Pad-- Adjusting the Head
Tension

NOTICE
• Do not use a long handle drum key (such as a high-torque drum key or high-tension drum key) to tighten the head. Over-tightening can damage your drum.

  • The drum key can be found in the pad set package.
  • Avoid over-tightening the bolts. If you hear a creaking sound in the wooden body, loosen the bolts slightly.
  • The head is properly tightened when the surface is smooth, with no wrinkles, yet sinks a little when you press the center.
  • Unlike acoustic drums, electronic drums have the same tone even when the head tension is changed. Adjusting the head tension is necessary to adjust the feel and prevent malfunction.

Replacing the Patch

The patch is made from consumable material, and may need to replaced when it becomes wrinkled, torn, or peeled. This product contains two spare patches, if they are used or missing, contact your dealer or qualified Yamaha service personnel. Patching the contact area with the beater can reduce wear on the head and beater.

  1.  Remove all six drum key bolts using the drum key.
NOTE: The drum key can be found in the pad set package.

  2.  Remove the hoop.

  3. Remove the old head, and then replace it with the new one. (The head can be installed in any direction.)
    NOTICE
    • Do not touch the sensor unit, to avoid causing damage to the parts.

  4. Attach the hoop, and then temporarily fix it with the drum key bolts.

  5. Adjust the head tension.
Refer to the “Adjusting the Head Tension” (on page 12).

  6. Apply a new patch so that the beater hits the center of the patch.
    NOTICE
    • If the kick pad is used without a patch, the head and beater will wear out faster and may cause damage.

The head replacement is now complete.

Troubleshooting

No sound is produced or the volume is too Low, Sound output does not match your feeling.

  • Is the head tension loose? Loose head tension may cause various problems. (See Adjusting the Head Tension.)
  • Ensure that the KP128 is correctly connected to a DTX Series drum trigger module using the stereo phone cable provided. (See Making Connections.)
  • Check the pad’s output level. If this level is too low, use the level adjuster to increase it. (See Adjusting the Output Level.)
  • If no sound is produced when the pad is struck softly, lower the setting of the Minimum Level parameter from the module’s trigger area.
  • Check that the base’s position is adjusted so that the beater hits the center of the pad correctly. (See Assembling the KP128.)

Two or more sounds are produced in response to a single strike (i.e., double-triggering).

  • Check the pad’s output level. If this level is too high, use the level adjuster to reduce it. Note that triggering of two or more sounds occurs when the output level is excessively high due to the fact that the signal being input into the drum trigger module remains large for a relatively long period of time. (See Adjusting the Output Level.)

For more troubleshooting tips, refer to the Owner’s Manual included with the DTX Series drum trigger module and/ or to the page for your specific product on the Yamaha website. If you still cannot find the information you need to resolve a problem, contact your Yamaha dealer or the customer support center indicated at the end of this manual for assistance.
