INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on your purchase of the PALMER Acoustic Pocket Amp. Providing a multitude of functions and a choice of crisp contemporary, warm vintage or neutral sound modes, it’s a veritable Swiss army knife to process acoustic string instruments. It works with guitars, basses, banjos, resonator guitars, violins, cellos and others equipped with active or passive piezo or magnetic pickup systems. Use it as effects pedal with your stage amp, preamp and direct box for PA systems and recording or headphones amp to play along with your favourite tracks – with the Acoustic Pocket Amp in your gig bag you’re always ready to perform!

QUICK APPLICATION GUIDE

EFFECTS PEDAL
To use the Acoustic Pocket Amp as a stomp box for alternate EQ or solo settings simply plug your instrument into the unit’s 1/4” input (17) and connect the 1/4” output (22) to your amplifier.

PREAMP AND DIRECT BOX
For preamp and/or DI applications plug your instrument into the unit’s 1/4” input (17) and connect the balanced XLR output (21) to a mic input of your PA or recording mixer. Adjust the channel’s input gain and/or the Pocket Amp Acoustic volume to prevent clipping. Please refer to the user manual of your mixer.

PRACTICE AMP
For playing along to your favorite songs connect headphones or earbuds to the dedicated output (18) and a playback source, e.g. MP3 player, to the AUX input (19). Use the source’s volume control for playback level adjustment.

CONNECTIONS AND CONTROLS

CONNECTIONS AND CONTROLS

1) SIGNAL AND PEAK INDICATOR
This LED lights up green when a signal is present at the input. It turns amber to indicate imminent clipping and flashes red during occasional peaks. If it stays red lower the instrument’s volume or engage the PAD switch (16) to avoid clipping.
When plugging a cable into the input (17) the Pocket Amp Acoustic performs a status check (LED red, amber, green for 3 seconds each). Without an input signal the LED does not illuminate.

2 – 5) EQ SECTION
The 3-band EQ is specifically tuned for acoustic string instruments. The BASS and Highs controls adjust the unit’s low and high frequency response. The MIDS are semi-parametric with individual LEVEL adjustment and FREQUENCY sweep for precise tone settings.

6) GAIN
This control adjusts the amount of gain depending on the mode selector (10) position. The GAIN control affects the signal and peak LED (1).

7) NOTCH
This control attenuates a very narrow frequency band to remove resonant feedback without affecting the overall sound of the instrument. It sweeps from 20 Hz (fully CCW, OFF position) to 400 Hz (fully CW), the centre position is 90 Hz.

8) BLEND
The BLEND control adjusts the ratio of the direct and processed signals, in the DRY position the unprocessed signal only is present at the output..

9) VOLUME
The VOLUME control adjusts the overall output level. It is inactive when the Acoustic Pocket Amp is bypassed.

10) MODE SELECTOR
The MODE switch provides a choice of three precision frequency contours. Select MAGN for acoustic guitars with magnetic pickups, the A.G. low frequency roll-off is suitable for eliminating guitar body noise and violins, and the full range A.B. preset is perfect for acoustic and upright basses.
NOTE: For accordeons, banjos, bouzoukis or mandolins select A.G. irrespective of their pickup systems.

11) DI
To double as a DI box the balanced XLR output (21) is switchable PRE or POST the Acoustic Pocket Amp’s circuitry. This switch does not affect the TO AMP output (22).

12) FOOTSWITCH CONFIGURATION
This assigns the footswitch to activating and bypassing the Acoustic Pocket Amp or muting the unit while feeding the signal to the THRU output (20) for silent tuning. The latter is also useful for noise-free instrument swapping onstage.

13) STYLE
This switch selects the Acoustic Pocket Amp’s overall character. MODERN provides a crisp, airy sound with lots of presence, VINTAGE a round, warm tone. In the FLAT position no colouration is added.

14) BYPASS SWITCH
This footswitch activates and deactivates the Acoustic Pocket Amp. With a tuner connected to THRU (20) and the assign switch (12) in the MUTE position, the footswitch feeds the input signal to this output only (see 12).

15) ON/OFF INDICATOR
This LED lights green when the Pocket Amp Acoustic is in bypass or mute mode. It turns red when sound processing is activated.

16) PAD SWITCH
Use this switch in conjunction with (1) to set the appropriate input level for your instrument. Make sure that the signal and peak LED does not light red permanently.

17) INPUT
Use a quality instrument cable to connect your instrument to this 1/4” jack.

18) PHONES
Use this 1/8” stereo mini jack to connect headphones or earbuds.

19) AUX IN
Use this input to connect stereo audio players to the Acoustic Pocket Amp. Set the playback level on your audio device to minimum before connecting to prevent ear damage.

20) THRU
This 1/4” mono jack enables connecting a tuner (see 12 and 14) or a second amp.

21) XLR OUPUT
Use a quality balanced microphone cable to connect this balanced mic level output to your mixer or audio interface.
CAUTION: Not suitable for permanent use with phantom power, operation with phantom power can damage the Pocket Amp

22) OUTPUT Use a quality mono instrument cable with 1/4” plugs to connect the unit to your amp or the next pedal in your effects chain.
This output and (21) are paralleled and electrically isolated. The DI switch (11) does not affect this output.

23) GROUND LIFT SWITCH
In the LIFT position this switch disconnects the ground between input and output to eliminate hum and noise when used with grounded equipment.

24) POLARITY SWITCH
This switch inverts the input signal polarity. Use this to remove low frequency resonant feedback.

25) FX INSERT
This 1/4” TRS connector provides input and output connections to insert external effects into the Acoustic Pocket Amp. It requires a 1/4” stereo to dual 1/4” mono plug Y-cable (SEND = tip, RETURN = ring, SHIELD = ground).

26) 9V DC INPUT
For mains operation, connect a suitable optional 9V DC (min. 200 mA) power adapter to this center negative barrel jack (e.g. Palmer PW9V).

NOTE: THE ACOUSTIC POCKET AMP SWITCHES ON AUTOMATICALLY WHEN INSERTING A ¼” JACK INTO THE UNIT’S INPUT. ALWAYS UNPLUG WHEN NOT IN USE TO AVOID BATTERY DRAIN.
