INTRODUCTION

Thank you for purchasing a Harp by Gear4music. To get the most out of your product,
please read this manual carefully.

MAINTENANCE OF YOUR HARP

Gear4music harps include very carefully selected tonewoods to produce the best quality sound and to ensure optimal performance of the instrument over time. As wood is a living material, it is important to know that your instrument is subject to humidity and temperature variations. The recommended climate conditions are below: Optimal temperature: 20°C ± 10°C (50°F – 86°F)
Optimal Humidity: 50% ± 15% The harp must be kept away from heat sources and never exposed to direct sunlight to avoid damage to the body and strings. It is always recommended to keep the instrument in its included padded bag when not in use. Clean your instrument only using a dry cloth, and remove all fingerprints from the instrument after playing to protect the finish. Do not use solvents or other domestic cleaners to clean or polish the instrument.

INITIAL TUNING

Tuning can be made by tightening and loosening the pegs on the top of the harp (clockwise to tighten and anticlockwise to loosen) using the included tuning key. Do note that all the tuning pegs are tapered, meaning that they are wider at the end with the tuning key socket and narrower at the other end. When shipped from Gear4music, the pegs are left loose inside the harp to prevent snapping the strings during transit and during any changes in humidity. When tuning the strings for the first time, make sure to push the pegs in to the body of the instrument while tuning. This will help to prevent the strings from slipping out of tune. Note that nylon strings take a while to settle to their desired tuning. As a result, it may take some time after initial tuning for the strings tuning to become stable. Do not tune to correct tuning straight away, because this may snap the strings. To get the best results, tune the harp so that there is some tension in the strings. Leave for some hours to allow the instrument to settle. Over a series of repeated tunings, slowly raise the tension of the strings up to the recommended tuning. This step may need to be repeated over a course of days for the tuning to become stable.

TUNING LEVERS

The tuning levers are available to help the performer play in a variety of different keys, by raising the pitch of the string by one semitone. The fine tuning of these levers is adjustable. Loosening the lever slightly from the harp using the cross-head screw, you can adjust the lever up or down the body to increase or decrease the pitch raise created by the lever.Note – the 12 string harp does not include tuning levers.

REPLACING THE STRINGS

Replacing of strings should only be done using like-for-like strings. A set of replacement strings has been provided with your harp, and string sets are available from Gear4music. Should you wish to use different strings, please consult the string gauge guide (see page 6 – 9) for reference. To replace the strings, follow the guide below. Please note, threading the strings should be done from the top of the harp, not through the soundboard.

Make a simple knot in the string.
Make a loop as indicated in the figure. 3. Overlap the loop on the knot in the direction indicated by the arrow holding on to points B and C of the knot. 4 Tighten the loop on the knot in the direction indicated by the arrow holding points B and C of the knot still. 5. For lower strings, it is recommended to include a 2cm piece of higher octave string to the knot to give more protection. Add this piece of string and pull as indicated by the arrow, holding on to points B and C still. 6. Thread the string into the hole of the tuning pin and pull in the direction indicated by the arrow. 7. Turn the pin clockwise, taking care to keep the string to the right of the hole. 8. For lower octave strings only, make a loop and fix under the string by tuning the pin clockwise.
