Congratulations on the purchase of your new Defy appliance! Please read this manual carefully before using your appliance for the first time and then store it within easy reach for future reference. We trust you will enjoy years of trouble-free use. The user manual:

  • This manual will provide you with information on how to safely operate and care for your appliance in order that you gain the maximum benefit from it.
  • Pay particular attention to any safety instructions.

Safety and set-up

Read the instructions thoroughly before using the appliance! Follow all safety instructions in order to avoid damages due to improper use! Keep the manual for future reference. If this appliance is given to a third party, this manual must also be handed over.

  • This appliance is intended for private domestic use only and is not suitable for professional catering purposes. It must not be used for commercial use.
  • Do not use the appliance for anything other than its intended use. The Toaster is designed for toasting and warming bread and buns only.
  • Do not use the appliance outdoors or in the bathroom.
  • Check if the mains voltage on the rating label corresponds to your local mains supply. The only way to disconnect the appliance from the mains is to pull out the plug.
  •  For additional protection, this appliance should be connected to a household faulty current protection switch with no more than 30 mA. Consult your electrician for advice.
  • Do not immerse the appliance, power cord or power plug in water or in other liquids. Do not hold it under running water, do not clean parts in a dish washer.
  • Disconnect the power plug after using the appliance, before cleaning the appliance, before leaving the room or if a fault occurs.
  • Do not disconnect the plug by pulling on the cord.
  • Do not wrap the power cord around the appliance.
  • Do not squeeze or bend the power cord and do not rub it on sharp edges in order to prevent any damage. Keep the cord away from hot surfaces and open flames.
  • Do not use an extension cord with the appliance.
  • Never use the appliance if the power cord or the appliance is damaged.
  • Our Household Appliances meet applicable safety standards, if the appliance or power cord is damaged, it must be repaired or replaced by the dealer, a service centre or a similarly qualified, authorized service person to avoid any dangers. Faulty or unqualified repair work may cause danger and risks to the user.
  • Do not dismantle the appliance under any circumstances. No warranty claims are accepted for damage caused by improper handling.
  •  Always keep the appliance out of the reach of children.
  •  This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning the use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety.
  • Children must be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the appliance.
  • Do not leave the appliance unattended while it is in use. Extreme caution is advised when the appliance is being used near children and people with limited physical, sensory or mental capabilities.
  •  Before using the appliance for the first time, clean all parts. Please see details in the “Cleaning and care” section.
  • Risk of fire if the crumb tray is not cleaned regularly.
  • Dry the appliance and all parts before connecting it to mains supply and before attaching the parts.
  • Never operate or place any part of this appliance on or near to hot surfaces such as a gas burner, electric burner or heated oven.
  •  Bread can catch fire if overheated. Never use the appliance in or near combustible and inflammable places, materials and furniture. Do not let the appliance come into contact with or become covered by inflammable materials such as curtains, textiles, walls, etc.
  • Do not use paper, cardboard, plastic in or under the appliance.
  • Use bread slices which are suitable for the bread slots.
  • Operate the appliance with delivered parts only.
  • Do not use the appliance with damp or wet hands.
  •  Always use the appliance on a stable, flat, clean, dry and non slip surface.
  •  Ensure that there is no danger that the power cord could be accidentally pulled or that someone could trip over it when the appliance is in use.
  •  Position the appliance in such a way that the plug is always accessible.
  •  Avoid touching hot surfaces as the outer casing becomes warm during use. There is the danger of burning.
  • Do not stick any foreign objects onto the appliance.
  •  This appliance must not be operated with an external clock timer or separate remote control system.
  • Do not toast the bread with extremely runny ingredients such as butter.
  • When using for the first time, smoke can develop due to production residues. However, this does not mean the appliance is defective. The first time you switch it on, use the appliance as you normally would, but without bread. Ensure for proper room ventilation.
  •  To avoid the risk of fire, frequently remove crumbs from crumb tray.
  • Do not use the toaster without the crumb tray in place.
  • Do not use this product with any foods containing sugar, jam or preserves.
  • Do not attempt to extract any jammed toast, muffins, bagels, bread or any other item with a knife or any other object, as contact with live elements may cause electric shock.
  •  If the toaster begins to emit smoke during operation, immediately stop the toasting process. If bread gets stuck in the toaster always unplug the appliance before removing the bread. Be careful the bread may be very hot.
  •  The toaster can only be switched on when the plug is connected to a wall socket.
  • Do not use any tools or objects in the appliance. Metal objects could cause short circuits or electric shock. Do not damage the heating elements and mechanics.
  • Do not use the appliance as a source of heat.
  • Do not attempt to dislodge bread when the appliance is switched on.
  •  Always unplug from the wall socket when not in use and before cleaning etc.

Operation

Preparation
Before using the appliance for the first time, clean the appliance (See the “Cleaning and care” section).
This appliance is for household use only.

Before first use

  1. Remove all packaging material, labels and/or stickers from your toaster. Make sure there is no packaging material remaining in the slots.
  2. Insert the removable crumb tray into the crumb tray slot.
  3. Select a location for the toaster. The location should be:
    • A flat, heat-resistant, non-flammable surface
    • At least 3 inches away from walls or back of the countertops.
    • At least one foot away from cabinet or shelving that may be above the toaster.
    • Away from flammable materials, such as curtains and wall fabric.
    • Away from a gas stove flame or electric element
  4.  Plug the power cord into 220 -240Volt, 50Hz AC outlet. To minimize cord clutter on kitchen countertops, use Cord Wrap located under the toaster.

Note
When using the appliance for the first time, smoke can develop due to production residues. This does not mean the appliance is defective. The first time you switch it on use the appliance as you normally would but without bread. It is recommended to use the medium browning control setting to burn- in. Ensure for proper room ventilation.
Using your Toaster

  1. Inserting the food into bread slots and toasting: Most types of the bread and pastries can be toasted. However, the slice should not be so thick as to jam the bread slot.
  2. The slice should be placed in the centre of each bread slot.

After you insert the food to bread slots:

  1. Select the designed darkness setting by turning the electronic browning control knob from 1-9.

  2. Press the Toast Lift down until it locks. The auto-adjusting bread guides will automatically centre the food for even browning.
    After the designed level of browning has been reached, the toast will pop up automatically. The bread carriage level will return to its original position and the indicator lights will turn off.

  3. Carefully remove the toasted food from the bread slots.
    Warning: Handle with care. Be very careful when taking the toast slices out of the toaster as the metal parts of the toaster and also the toast can become very hot.

Helpful Hints:

  • Toast thin slices with setting of 1- 4.
  • Always toast any toaster pastries, tarts or sandwiches on the light setting (1- 2).
  • If food becomes wedged, the built-in Auto Power-off function will automatically shut off the power.

Defrost
If the food to be toasted is frozen, press the Defrost Button after you have pressed down the Toast Control Lever. The light around the Defrost Button will remain on until toasting is done, or the Cancel Button is pushed.

Reheat
The Reheat setting will warm toast. to warm toast, press the Reheat Button after you have pressed down the Toast Control Lever. When the Reheat Button is pressed The light will remain on until reheating is done, or the Cancel Button is pushed.

Cancel
To interrupt toasting at any time, press the Cancel button.
IMPORTANT: If toast slices get stuck in the toaster: Let the toaster cool down completely. Unplug the cord and move the Toast Control Lever up and down a few times to raise “jammed” toast. Never use metal utensils to free toast. Never insert your finger or metallic utensils into the bread slots.

Information

Care and cleaning
Clean the toaster regularly. This appliance contains no user serviceable parts and requires little maintenance. Leave any servicing or repair to qualified personnel. DO NOT IMMERSE THE TOASTER IN WATER. After use and before cleaning, unplug the toaster power cord from the power outlet and wait for the toaster to cool.

Cleaning crumb tray
The Removable Crumb Tray is located on the opposite side from the Toaster Control Lever. Grasp the handle of the Crumb Tray and pull out completely. Dispose of crumbs and wash the Tray in hot, sudsy water. Stubborn spots can be removed with a nylon mesh pad. The Tray is not dishwasher safe. Dry the Tray thoroughly before re-inserting in its slot in the Toaster.
Warning: Empty the crumb tray frequently. Crumbs will accumulate in the crumb tray and could catch fire if not emptied periodically.

Cleaning the outside surfaces
Unplug the toaster and allow it to cool completely before cleaning. To clean, wipe the exterior with a slightly dampened soft cloth or sponge and dry with a cloth or paper towel. Do not use strong cleaners or abrasives that may scratch the surface and never spray cleaners directly onto the toaster.

Cleaning the top surface
Wipe the surface on the top of the bread slots with a damp cloth and dry it with another cloth of paper towel.

Storage
If you do not plan to use the appliance for a long period of time, please store it carefully. Make sure the appliance is unplugged, cooled down and completely dry. Wrap the power cord around the cable coil on the bottom of the toaster. Store the appliance in a cool, dry place. Make sure the appliance is kept out of the reach of children.

Environmental note
This appliance has been made from high quality materials and parts which can be reused and are suitable for recycling.
Do not dispose of the appliance with normal household waste at the end of its service life. Consult your local authorities for disposal information and facilities available.
Help protect the environment by recycling used appliances.

Warranty

This certificate is issued by DEFY APPLIANCES (PTY) LIMITED manufacturers of Defy and Ocean products, hereinafter the Company, to the original purchaser only, of the appliance described on the certificate and shall constitute the only warranty given in respect of this appliance. The Company warrants to the original purchaser that for a period of ONE YEAR from date of purchase the appliance is free from defect under normal domestic use, both in workmanship and material, subject to the following conditions.

  1. Carry-in service. Small appliances are repaired in our service centres and are not collected from the customer’s home. Faulty units must be delivered to the purchasing dealer or to the nearest Company Service Centre for warranty repairs.
  2. Vitreous enamelware, fuses and lamps are specifically excluded from these warranties. It is an express condition of these warranties that the purchaser takes due care and attention in the use and maintenance of the appliance. Abuse, misuse in conflict with operating instructions, connection to incorrect voltages and subjection to commercial use shall release the Company from its obligations.
  3. This warranty shall become void and cease to operate if the appliance is dismantled by, or any repairs to the appliance are effected by any persons not duly authorised by the Company, or if substitute parts not approved by the Company are used in the appliance, or if the serial number of the appliance is removed.
  4. The Company shall not be responsible for damages resulting from fire, flood, civil disturbances or any Act of God. The Company shall not, in terms of these warranties be responsible nor held liable for any consequential loss or damage of any kind caused by or due to the failure or malfunction of the appliance. The Company shall not be responsible for damages caused by insect and/or animal infestation.
  5. The Company shall not be responsible for transportation or other costs other than those incurred within the provisions of Point 1 of this Certificate.
  6. For warranties in the Republic of South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, please contact your nearest Defy office. Please refer to the previous page for respective South African branches and Sub-Saharan Africa branches.
  7. Where service is requested under warranty and no-fault or defect can be found by the Company, all costs incurred will be for the purchaser’s account.
  8. This Certificate as well as your invoice will serve as proof of purchase. For the purpose of warranty, it will be essential to produce this Certificate and invoice. Failure to do so will render the purchaser liable for service costs.
