Safety and set-up
Please read this instruction manual thoroughly prior to using this appliance!
Follow all safety instructions in order to avoid damages due to improper use!
Keep the instruction manual for future reference. Should this appliance be
given to a third party, then this instruction manual must also be handed over.
- NEVER use this appliance for purposes other than those specified.
- This appliance is intended or domestic use only.
- Never use the appliance in or near to combustible, inflammable places and materials.
- Check if the mains voltage on the rating label corresponds to your local mains supply. The only way to disconnect the appliance from the mains is to pull out the plug.
- Joint use of the same socket with another appliance may cause unusual heat and fire.
- Do not immerse the appliance, power cord or power plug in water or in other liquids.
- Disconnect the power plug after using the appliance, before cleaning the appliance, before leaving the room or if a fault occurs.
- Do not disconnect the plug by pulling on the cord.
- Prevent damage to the power cord by not squeezing, bending or rubbing it on sharp edges. Keep the cord away from hot surfaces and open flames.
- Do not use an extension cord with the appliance.
- NEVER use the appliance if the power cord or the appliance is damaged.
- Do not place the unit on an unstable location.
- NEVER use it in a place which is near water or fire. Do not use it in a place exposed to direct sunshine or oil splash. Keep it in a place out of the reach by children.
- If a spare part such as wire or plug is damaged or the appliance fails, stop the operation instantly and send it to the service centre for inspection and repair. Repair by the user is not allowed.

- Always use the appliance on a stable, flat, clean and dry surface.
- Make sure that there is no danger that the power cord could be accidentally pulled or that someone could trip over it when the appliance is in use.
- Position the appliance in such a way that the plug is always accessible.
- Do not stick any foreign objects on the appliance.
- Do not use the appliance outdoors or in the bathroom.
- To protect against electrical hazards, do not immerse cord, plugs, or the unit in water or other liquid.
- Unplug from outlet when not in use. Allow unit to cool before cleaning.
- Do not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or after the appliance malfunctions, or is dropped or damaged in any manner. Return the appliance to the manufacturer, for examination repair or adjustment. See Warranty section.
- The use of accessories or attachments, not recommended or sold by the manufacture, may cause fire, electric shock or injury.
- Do not let cord hang over edge of table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
- Do not place appliance base on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
- Any servicing should be performed by an authorized service agent.
- Do not wrap the power cord around the appliance.
- Do not dismantle the appliance under any circumstances. No warranty claims are accepted for damage caused by improper handling.

- It is prohibited to modify or repair the unit by an unqualified technician as this may cause fire or electric shock. Please send it to a designated service agent for repair or replacement of spar parts.

- Places near water or fire;
- Adjacent to walls and furniture;
- Places exposed to direct sunshine or oil splash.
- The temperature of the accessible surfaces may be very high when the appliance is in use. Make sure not to touch these hot parts of the appliance.
- Use the appliance in a well-ventilated area. Keep at least 10-15 centimetres of space on all sides of the appliance to allow adequate air circulation.
- Do not place the appliance on or near a gas or electric burner, or inside or on top of a heated oven or other heat source.
- Do not allow the appliance to touch curtains, walln coverings, clothing,dishtowels, or other flammable materials during its use.
- Do not touch hot surfaces of the appliance. Do not move the appliance while it is plugged in. Allow the appliance to thoroughly cool before handling it.
- Do not use attachments not recommended for use with this appliance or sold by the appliance manufacturer.
- Do not use the appliance near water or other liquids.
- Do not leave the appliance unattended while it is in use.
- The appliance is not intended to be operated by means of an external timer or separate remote-control system.
- This appliance is intended for indoor, non-industrial, non-commercial, household use only as a panini maker and healthy grill. Do not use the item outdoors or for any other purpose.
Before use
Preparation
Before first use read the User`s manual carefully, special care must be given
to follow directions and cautions to avoid any damage to property or human
injury.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
- To avoid a circuit overload when usingthis appliance, do not operate another high-wattage appliance on the same electrical circuit.
- A short power supply cord is provided with this appliance. An extension cord is not recommended for use with this appliance, but if one must be used:
The marked electrical rating of the cord must be at least as great as that of the appliance. Arrange the extension cord so that it does not hang where it can be tripped over or pulled unintentionally.
| CAUTION: Do not use this appliance to cook or defrost frozen food. All
food must be completely defrosted before cooking it with this appliance.

CAUTION: Do not use metal utensils on this appliance, as they will
scratch and damage the Plates’ non-stick coating.
| NOTE: During initial use of this appliance, a little smoke may be
produced. This is normal and will subside with further use.
NOTES:
- Cooking time for different types of foods depends on the type and thickness of the food.
- Food should be cooked thoroughly before consumption.

If the appliance is damaged in any way do not use it. Report the damage to
your dealer who will take the necessary corrective action.
Operating the appliance

Before using this appliance for the first time, clean it as described in the “Care and Maintenance” section.

Press in the end of the Locking Latch nearest the Handle to unlock the appliance.

Open the unit by pulling the Handle up.

Close the Plates and turn the unit on by plugging it into a standard electrical outlet. Verify that the Power Indicator Light illuminates in orange.
WARNING : The Cooking Plates and metal surfaces of the unit will become extremely hot when in use. To avoid a burn hazard, wear heat resistant mitts or gloves and touch only the black portion of the Handle. -
After the unit preheats for approximately five minutes, the Ready Indicator Light will illuminate in green, indicating the appliance is ready for use.

Use the Handle to lift the Upper Plate. Place food on the Lower Plate using wooden or plastic heat-resistant utensils.

Use the Handle to lower and rest the Upper Plate on top of the food.

When the food is cooked as desired, lift the Handle to open the Plates, then remove the food using the utensils. If more cooking will be done at this time, close the plates to conserve heat.

Repeat Steps 7-9 until all cooking is complete, reapplying cooking oil as necessary.

Turn off the appliance by unplugging the Power Cord from the electrical outlet.

When the unit has completely cooled, clean and dry it.

Lock the unit in its closed position by pressing in the end of the Locking Latch farthest from the Handle.
| Ensure that packing material is disposed of in a responsible manner and that
any plastic bags are cut up to prevent children playing with them and
accidentally suffocating.

Care and maintenance
Cleaning and care
Caution
Never use petrol, solvents or abrasive cleaners, metal objects or hard brushes
to clean the appliance.
Never put the appliance in water or any other liquid.
- Before cleaning, switch the appliance off and disconnect it from the wall socket.
- Let the appliance cool down completely.
- Wipe the outside with only a slightly moistened cloth ensuring that no moisture, oil or grease enters the cooling slots. Do not clean the inside or outside with any abrasive scouring pad or steel wool as this will damage the finish.
- Clean the body with a rag. Do not immerse in water or wash with splashing water.
- Clean the appliance after each use.
Note Before using the appliance after cleaning, dry all parts carefully using a soft towel.
Storage
- If you do not plan to use the appliance for a long period of time, please store it carefully.
- Make sure the appliance is unplugged and completely dry.
- Store the appliance in a cool, dry place.
- Make sure the appliance is kept out of the reach of children.
Environmental note
Do not dispose of the appliance with normal household waste at the end of its
service life. Consult your local authorities for disposal information and
facilities available.

Warranty
This certificate is issued by DEFY APPLIANCES (PTY) LIMITED manufacturers of
Defy and Ocean products, hereinafter the Company, to the original purchaser
only, of the appliance described on the certificate and shall constitute the
only warranty given in respect of this appliance.
The Company warrants to the original purchaser that for a period of ONE YEAR
from date of purchase the appliance is free from defect under normal domestic
use, both in workmanship and material, subject to the following conditions.
- Carry-in service. Small appliances are repaired in our service centres and are not collected from the customers home. Faulty units must be delivered to the purchasing dealer or to the nearest Company Service Centre for warranty repairs.
- Vitreous enamelware, fuses and lamps are specifically excluded from these warranties. It is an express condition of these warranties that the purchaser takes due care and attention in the use and maintenance of the appliance. Abuse, misuse in conflict with operating instructions, connection to incorrect voltages and subjection to commercial use shall release the Company from its obligations.
- This warranty shall become void and cease to operate if the appliance is dismantled by, or any repairs to the appliance are effected by any persons not duly authorised by the Company, or if substitute parts not approved by the Company are used in the appliance, or if the serial number of the appliance is removed.
- The Company shall not be responsible for damages resulting from fire, flood, civil disturbances or any Act of God. The Company shall not, in terms of these warranties be responsible nor held liable for any consequential loss or damage of any kind caused by or due to the failure or malfunction of the appliance. The Company shall not be responsible for damages caused by insect and/or animal infestation.
- The Company shall not be responsible for transportation or other costs other than those incurred within the provisions of Point 1 of this Certificate.
- For warranties in the Republic of South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, please contact the customer care line. Please refer to the previous page for respective South African branches and Sub-Saharan Africa branches.
- Where service is requested under warranty and no fault or defect can be found by the Company, all costs incurred will be for the purchaser’s account.
- This Certificate as well as your invoice will serve as proof of purchase. For the purpose of warranty, it will be essential to produce this Certificate and invoice. Failure to do so, will render the purchaser liable for service costs.
