Some dust created by power sanding, sawing, grinding, drilling, and other construction activities contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of these chemicals are:
- Lead from lead-based paints.
- Crystalline silica from bricks, cement, and other masonry products.
- Arsenic and chromium from chemically treated lumber.
Your risk from these exposures varies, depending on how often you do this type of work. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: Work in a well-ventilated area, and work with approved safety equip-ment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles.

SAFETY
Warning:
For Your Own Safety, Read Instruction Manual Before Operating This
Machine
The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your attention to possible
hazardous conditions. This manual uses a series of symbols and signal words
which are intended to convey the level of importance of the safety messages.
The progression of symbols is described below. Remember that safety messages
by themselves do not eliminate danger and are not a substitute for proper
accident prevention measures.
Danger: Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, WILL result in death or serious injury.
Warning: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not
avoided, COULD result in death or serious injury.
Caution: Indicates a potentially hazardous situation that, if not
avoided, MAY result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert
against unsafe practices.
Notice: This symbol is used to alert the user to useful information about
the proper operation of the machine.
Safety Instructions for Machinery
- READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE STARTING MACHINERY. Machinery presents serious injury hazards to untrained users.
- ALWAYS USE ANSI-APPROVED SAFETY GLASSES WHEN OPERATING MACHINERY. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact-resistant lenses, they are NOT safety glasses.
- ALWAYS WEAR AN ANSI-APPROVED RESPIRATOR WHEN OPERATING MACHINERY THAT PRODUCES DUST. Wood dust is a carcinogen and can cause cancer and severe respiratory illnesses.
- ALWAYS USE HEARING PROTECTION WHEN OPERATING MACHINERY. Machinery noise can cause permanent hearing damage.
- WEAR PROPER APPAREL. DO NOT wear loose clothing, gloves, neckties, rings, or jewelry that may get caught in moving parts. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair and wear non-slip footwear.
- NEVER OPERATE MACHINERY WHEN TIRED, OR UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS OR ALCOHOL. Be mentally alert at all times when running machinery.
- ONLY ALLOW TRAINED AND PROP-ERLY SUPERVISED PERSONNEL TO OPERATE MACHINERY. Make sure operation instructions are safe and clearly understood.
- KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY. Keep all children and visitors safe dis-tance from the work area.
- MAKE WORKSHOP CHILDPROOF. Use padlocks, and master switches, and remove start switch keys.
- NEVER LEAVE WHEN THE MACHINE IS RUNNING. Turn power OFF and allow all moving parts to come to a complete stop before leaving the machine unattended.
- DO NOT USE IT IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS. DO NOT use machinery in damp, wet locations, or where any flammable or noxious fumes may exist.
- KEEP THE WORK AREA CLEAN AND WELL-LIT. Clutter and dark shadows may cause accidents.
- USE A GROUNDED EXTENSION CORD RATED FOR THE MACHINE AMPERAGE. Undersized cords overheat and lose power. Replace extension cords if they become damaged. DO NOT use extension cords for 220V machinery.
- ALWAYS DISCONNECT FROM THE POWER SOURCE BEFORE SERVICING MACHINERY. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position before reconnecting.
- MAINTAIN MACHINERY WITH CARE. Keep blades sharp and clean for the best and safest performance. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories.
- MAKE SURE GUARDS ARE IN PLACE AND WORK CORRECTLY BEFORE USING MACHINERY.
- REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Make a habit of checking for keys and adjusting wrenches before turning machinery ON.
- CHECK FOR DAMAGED PARTS BEFORE USING MACHINERY. Check for binding and alignment of parts, broken parts, part mounting, loose bolts, and any other conditions that may affect machine operation. Repair or replace damaged parts.
- USE RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES. Refer to the instruction manual for recommended accessories. The use of improper accessories may cause a risk of injury.
- DO NOT FORCE MACHINERY. Work at the speed for which the machine or accessory was designed.
- SECURE WORKPIECE. Use clamps or a vise to hold the workpiece when practical. A secured workpiece protects your hands and frees both hands to operate the machine.
- DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times.
- MANY MACHINES WILL EJECT THE WORKPIECE TOWARD THE OPERATOR. Know and avoid conditions that cause the workpiece to “kickback.”
- ALWAYS LOCK MOBILE BASES (IF USED) BEFORE OPERATING MACHINERY.
- BE AWARE THAT CERTAIN WOODS MAY CAUSE AN ALLERGIC REACTION in people and animals, especially when exposed to fine dust. Make sure you know what type of wood dust you will be exposed to and always wear an approved respirator.

Drilling & Tapping Installation Holes
Older Model G1140 Edge Sanders does not come with the installation holes shown in Figure 2. These models will have to be drilled and tapped as described in the following instructions.
To drill and tap the installation holes:
-
Unplug the sander!
-
If you are installing the radius attachment onto a Model G1140 Edge Sander, remove the end table, main table, table adjustment mechanisms, and the sanding stop.
-
Use a center punch to mark the installation holes shown in Figures 3 & 4.
-
Temporarily bolt the long support bracket into the two holes indicated in Figure 5 and use a center punch to mark the location of the third hole.
-
Drill pilot holes with an ¹⁄8″ or a ³⁄16″ drill bit.
-
Drill the holes through the platen and the rotation plate with a 7⁄16″ drill bit.
-
Drill the installation hole in the stand using a 5⁄16″ drill bit.
Note —Always use cutting fluid when drilling and tapping sheet metal (the stand and rotation plate). When drilling or tapping cast iron (the platen), cutting fluid is not necessary. -
Thread the stand installation hole with a 3⁄8″ tap.
Note— For every half turn of the tap, back off a quarter turn to clear the chips and prevent the tap from breaking.
Assembly
To install fretboard radius attachment:
- Slide the slot in the short support bracket onto the rotation plate and loosely attach the bracket to the platen with two 3⁄8″-16 x 2″ hex bolts, four flat washers, and two hex nuts. Note—Some machines may require the included 3⁄8″ thick shim between the bracket and the platen.
- Attach the rotation plate bracket to the short support bracket with (2) 5⁄16″-18 x 1⁄2″ hex bolts and (2) 5⁄16″ flat washers (see Figure 6), then align the hole in short support bracket with a hole in rotation plate and loosely secure it with a 3⁄8″-16 x 1½” hex bolt and a 3⁄8″ flat washer.
- Plumb the short support bracket as shown in Figure 7 and tighten the bolts.
- Install the long support bracket with three 3⁄8″-16 x 1″ hex bolts and washers.
- Plumb the long support bracket and tighten the bolts.
- Remove the upper right motor mounting bolt.
- Install the cross brace as shown in Figure 8 with three 5⁄16″-18 x 2½” hex bolts, six flat washers, and three hex nuts.
- Slide the horizontal adjustment tubes through the guide rails as shown in Figure 9, with the threaded holes towards the outside of the machine, and tighten the hex bolts.
- Slide the height adjustment arms into the locking plates, as shown in Figure 10, with the hanger openings outward, and tighten the hex bolts.
- Place the swing arm into the hanger openings as shown in Figure 11.
- Adjust the height adjustment arms until the swing arm is seated into the hangers and both ends are an equal distance above the sanding belt.
- To use the full surface of the sanding belt, slide the horizontal adjustment arms so the swing arm is diagonal across the sanding belt surface.
OPERATIONS
Operation Safety
Warning: Damage to your eyes, lungs, and ears could result from using this attachment without proper protective gear. Always wear safety glasses, a respirator, and hearing protection when operating this attachment.
Warning : Loose hair and clothing could get caught in machinery and cause serious personal injury. Keep loose clothing and long hair away from moving machinery.
NOTICE
If you have never used this type of attachment or equipment before, WE
STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you read books, trade magazines, or get formal
training before beginning any projects. Regardless of the content in this
section, Grizzly Industrial will not be held liable for accidents caused by
lack of training.
Attaching the Fretboard
There are several methods of attaching the fretboard to the radius attachment.
These include screws, double stick tape, friction pins, clamping, or a vacuum
system. These instruc-tions only cover attaching the fretboard with double-
stick tape.
To attach the fretboard to the radius attachment:
-
Use a jointer to flatten the back of the fretboard.
-
Mark a line down the center of the back of the fretboard.
Note —This centerline is important. If it is off-center, the radius of the fretboard will be off-center. -
Place a strip of double-stick tape on either side of the holes in the swing arm crossbar. Note—Only use high-quality, film type, double stick tape. Reinforced and foam-backed double stick tape will not hold the fretboard securely.
-
Line up the swing arm crossbar holes with the centerline on the fretboard and carefully stick the fretboard to the crossbar.
-
When finished radiating the fretboard, remove the tape residue from the crossbar with WD-40®, or an oil, such as gun oil.
-
Clean off the oil residue with lacquer thinner or an alcohol-based solvent.
Adjusting Radius
This fretboard radius attachment is capable of creating radiuses from 10″ to 16″ by adjusting the distance from the swing arm shaft to the sanded surface.
To adjust the radius:
-
Loosen the button head cap screws that secure the swing arm shafts to the height adjustable arms as shown in Figure 12.
-
Adjust the height from the bottom surface of the fretboard to the center of the swing arm shaft to the desired radius.
Example: To achieve a 16″ radius on the fretboard, the distance is shown as X” in Figure 12 would be 16″. -
Repeat Step 2 on the other end of the fretboard.
Note —To create a compound radius, the distance from the fretboard to the swing arm shaft will be different on each end.
Sanding
To radius a fretboard:
-
Adjust the height adjustment arm so the cross member is parallel with the sanding belt as shown in Figure 13.
Note —Notice how the swing arm shafts in Figure 13 are different distances from the fretboard (to create a compound radius), but the fretboard is parallel with the sanding belt. -
Use the leveling knobs to fine-tune the height so the swing arm can have free motion.
-
Turn the sander ON. Lower the fretboard with the leveling knobs and swing the swingarm. Continue with this step until the fretboard is sanded across its entire surface.
-
Check the fretboard for the desired radius with radius gauges.
-
If the radius is incorrect, increase the distance between the swing arm shaft and the fretboard to make a larger radius; shorten it to make a smaller radius.
-
If the radius is correct, continue sanding the fretboard to the desired thickness.
MAINTENANCE
Lubrication
This radiusing attachment requires minimal main-tenance. For optimum performance, lubricate the swing arm shafts with a general-purpose grease, as needed.
Cleaning
Cleaning the Model G0577 is relatively easy. Vacuum excess wood chips and sawdust, and wipe off the remaining dust with a dry cloth.
Warning: Always disconnect power to the machine before performing maintenance. Failure to do this may result in serious personal injury.
