Never used mine in a chicken. OR any other animal. If you try using it in a chicken, I’m sure the chicken will make too much noise to hear the radio anyway.

Yes, the play/pause button functions as the mute button while in radio mode. This is an excellent radio I highly recommend it.
how long does the batte ry last?
It probably lasts 3 evenings. I usually turn it on when I go to bed. My wife turns it off when she comes to bed, but after about 3 evenings, I have to recharge it. Be mindful too, that the louder you play it, the shorter the battery charge lasts. I did buy extra batteries and a separate charger 2 batteries and the charger was about $8.50. You can buy a single battery for under $5. Takes all of 10 seconds to change out the battery. If you search, you can find extra batteries with about 10% greater capacity.
What is the purpose of the square plastic piece with a tab that is attached to the carrying strap?
If you insert the small tab into the slot that is in the battery cover it serves as a prop so you can set the radio on a table and it will be angled up at about 45 degrees. It’s pretty helpful actually
Can the MP3 player be used for audiobooks?
I think the maximum Micro SD it can take is 32 GB and the max time it can record is 3 hours. If audio files are not too large, and in mp3/WMA format, it should play.
How many hours can it record on one full battery when recording radio?
I used mine to record a convention for a total of 4.5 hours at high quality. Volume was at 15. I started with a fully-charged battery, after recording for the 4.5 hr, the battery meter had dropped one bar. Based on this experience, I would estimate I could safely get at least 10-12 hrs recording on a full battery. FYI: I purchased a spare battery and a drop-in charger for it. Thus I can change batteries in about 15 seconds.

No, because the radio has no clock/alarm.
can it play in random mode?
Yes, it can. While in Mp3 playing mode press Play/Pause. Scroll down to Play Mode. Scroll down to Random. Bam. It plays Randomly selected songs. You must do this after every time you turn off your unit. Simple to do. Works perfectly!

Yes, it does. There are three buttons on the lower face of the radio, that are used for the mp3 player. They also are used for scanning
