The Name Behind Your Steamer
This appliance is a result of over 25 years of expertise in dry steam technology and our fascination with the origins of sanitization. In 1864, a French scientist named Louis Pasteur invented “pasteurization”, a method of sanitizing objects and surfaces using high heat; a process that is commonly used today in a variety of industries and applications. Although Pasteur is considered to be the father of modern microbiology, the origins of microbiology actually trace back to ancient Rome. In 37 BCE, one of Ancient Rome’s greatest scholars named Marcus Terentius Varro predicted that:
“…there are bred certain minute creatures which cannot be seen by the eyes, but which float in the air and enter the body through the mouth and nose and cause serious diseases…”
Nearly 2000 years ago, Varro not only predicted the existence of microscopic organisms, but he also predicted that certain microorganisms may be pathogenic and cause diseases. He teaches his readers that cleanliness is the best way to avoid these disease-causing microorganisms. Almost 2000 years later, we can now achieve proper sanitization with dry steam technology and Varro’s theory was not only correct but is more relevant today than ever before.
Every Soniclean Varro steamer is built, assembled, and tested by skilled technicians in our factory in Northern Italy. With proper use and regular maintenance, your Soniclean Varro will allow you to achieve excellent cleaning results for many years to come. On the following page, you will learn about dry steam technology.
What is “Dry Steam”
Most residential steamers use boilers that are designed for low-pressure operation. While effective in some applications, low-pressure steam leaves behind a considerable amount of hot water residue during cleaning and requires long contact times for disinfecting surfaces and objects. Dry steam, also known as “saturated steam”, is produced when water is heated and pressurized beyond its normal boiling point of 212°F. The higher the temperature/pressure of the steam, the less water the steam will contain by mass. For example, if steam contains 10% water by mass, then the steam has a dryness fraction of 0.9 or 90%. For steam to be considered “dry steam”, the steam cannot contain more than 5% water by mass. The Soniclean Varro combines high heat with 7 bars of pressure, to produce dry steam that is up to 338°F with a dryness fraction greater than 0.95.

Getting Started – Display
Filling with Water
Before connecting the power cord to the electrical outlet, make sure that the boiler cap on the underside of the steamer is tightened completely. Fill the refill tank with TAP WATER* using the included refill bottle. To turn on the steamer, press the ON button on the touch screen display (Fig. 3.1). When turned on, the touch screen will display “ON” (Fig. 3.2) and the steamer will automatically begin to pump the water from the refill tank into the boiler. The appliance needs about 7-8 minutes to convert the water into dry steam. Once it reaches operating pressure, the temperature will appear on the display (Fig. 3.3). Once the temperature is displayed on the screen, the steamer is ready for use. NOTE: If your steamer runs out of water, the machine will produce an alarm and “H2O” will appear on the display screen. When your steamer is out of the water, the unit will not produce steam until the refill tank is replenished.
*ONLY USE TAP WATER WITH THIS STEAMER. Distilled or Reverse Osmosis water does not contain sufficient concentrations of minerals to allow for optimal steam production and cleaning performance. The ideal water TDS (total dissolved solids) should be within:
If your home’s tap water hardness is high, descaling the machine more frequently is advised for optimal performance. Please see page 19 for descaling instructions.
Getting Started – Controls
Once your steamer is filled with water, turned on, and is at operating temperature, you can connect the hose to the machine. The handle on the steam hose allows you to select from three different power settings, control when the steam is released, and operate the safety locking feature. As a safety feature, the steam release trigger (B) will be locked by default. To unlock the steam release trigger and toggle through the steam power settings, click the button (A) with your thumb.
When the desired steam power setting is selected, steam will be released when the trigger (B) is pressed. IMPORTANT: If your steam hose is cold, this might cause condensed water to initially exit the hose. To purge this condensation, release steam from the handle at high power for 10 seconds. It is recommended to purge the hose in an area that will not splash back towards you or the machine. For safety purposes, always lock the steam release trigger when you are not steaming to prevent accidental discharge.
Using your ThermoFiber Cloths
Your Soniclean Varro steamer includes (3) specially engineered, ultra- absorbent ThermoFiber steam clothes. While normal microfiber cloths melt at around 140° F, these ThermoFiber clothes are designed to withstand temperatures of up to 340° F without losing their shape and absorbency properties.
IMPORTANT: Do not use regular microfiber cloths with the steamer as they will melt and may cause injury to the user and damage to the machine. When washing your ThermoFiber cloths in the washing machine, do not use fabric softener. When used in conjunction with the appropriate pad (PAGE 6, parts #9 and #10), the ThermoFiber cloths can be affixed to both the rectangular or triangular tool for an efficient way to clean and sanitize smooth surfaces like stone, tile, laminate, glass, wood, metal and more. For video demonstrations on how to affix the ThermoFiber cloths to each tool, please visit: www.sonicleanusa.com/varro

Descaling your Steamer
Over time, natural mineral deposits in your tap water can accumulate in the steamer boiler, pumps, and waterlines. To ensure optimal performance and to avoid causing damage to the machine, descaling the steamer every 4-6 months is required. Soniclean Varro uses a special descaling powder that can be purchased through www.sonicleanusa.com
To descale your steamer:
- Unplug the machine from the power source.
- Wait until the appliance cools down completely (may take up to 12-24 hours).
- Unscrew boiler cap (1) by using the boiler key, empty the boiler and screw the cap back on (DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE BOILER CAP).
- Remove the refill tank cap and empty the refill tank by carefully inverting the machine over a sink or bucket.
- Mix one packet of descaling powder with 35 fl oz. of cold water. Once the powder is completely dissolved, add the mixed descaling solution to the refill tank, and replace the refill tank cap.
- Turn the steamer ON and wait until the appliance reaches operating temperature.
- Once the steamer reaches operating temperature, turn the machine OFF and unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet.
- Let the appliance completely cool down.
- Once the steamer cools down, repeat step 3. (Don’t forget to screw the boiler cap back on.)
- Once the boiler has been drained, you are now ready to refill your steamer with tap water and resume cleaning.
IMPORTANT: Using a descaling solution that is not approved for use in the Soniclean Varro VSS-1000 steamer may cause irreparable damage to the machine and will void your machine’s warranty.
