Pre-Installation
PLANNING INSTALLATION
- Locate the unit where ambient light sources will not interfere with the photocell and position it in the general direction of the desired motion sensor coverage.
- Locate the sensor away from heat-producing sources to prevent false triggering.
- Placing the sensor in areas receiving less sunlight at dusk (east side of the house, behind trees and bushes, under a deck) will have the transformer come on earlier in the evening. Mounting the controller in brighter locations will have the transformer come on when it has become darker outside.
- The detection zone of the controller PIR sensor is approximately 100 degrees in horizontal direction x 80 degrees in vertical direction x 20 ft. (6 m) distance.

Installation
1. Mounting the controller
Wall Mounting:
- Locate the wall area in which you would like to install your controller. Avoid pointing the sensor at nighttime light sources such as windows, porch lights, and street lights. Select a suitable mounting location within 24 ft. of the transformer, and 5 ft. from the nearest low voltage power cable.
- If mounting to a wallboard or brick wall, drill a hole in the wall, and insert the plastic anchor (BB) into the hole. Insert the mounting screw (AA) into the anchor (BB), leaving about 1/4 in. of the screw (AA) sticking out of the wall surface. Hang the controller body (A) onto the screw (AA).
- If mounting to a wood surface, insert the mounting screws (AA) into the wall, leaving about 1/4 in. of the screws (AA) sticking out of the wood surface. Hang the controller body (A) onto the screw (AA).
Ground Mounting:
- Locate a ground area in which you would like to install your controller. Avoid pointing the sensor at nighttime light sources such as windows, porch lights, and street lights. Select a suitable mounting location within 24 ft. of the transformer, and 5 ft. from the nearest low voltage power cable.
- Insert the ground stake (C) firmly into the ground at the installation location. If the ground is too hard, soak the ground with water to soften the ground or drive a metal rod or screwdriver into the ground to create a hole for the ground stake (C).
- Connect the pole (B) to the ground stake (C).
- Connect the controller body (A) to the pole (B).
2. Connecting the signal cable to the transformer
- If your transformer is already installed with an existing remote photocell, unscrew the photocell connector cover from the transformer and pull the bi-pin connector out of the mating socket. If your transformer is new without a photocell control wire connected, remove the dust cap covering the connector socket.
- Carefully route the slim signal cable from the controller body (A) and plug it into the mating socket on the transformer. Screw the connector cap onto the socket to provide a water-tight connection. Route and coil the excess wire to protect it from lawnmowers, trimmers, etc. Note that the bi-pin connector is polarized and can be inserted into the socket only one way.
3. Connecting the charging cable to the low voltage cable
- Your controller is provided with a Quick Clip wire connector at the end of the 5 ft. long charging cable.
- Place the wire connector on opposite sides of the nearest low voltage cable where the controller will be located (Fig. 1).
- Press the wire connector together until fully seated and locked around the cable. Pre-set prongs will pierce the cable insulation and establish contact.
- Once the connector is in place, it is recommended to wrap it with electrical tape (not included) for additional protection. (Fig. 2).
NOTE: Our device allows either 12VAC or 15VAC charging power input from the low voltage cable.
Operation
1. Setting the transformer
Read the USE AND CARE GUIDE of the transformer you purchased from The Home Depot. Follow the instructions to set the transformer in PHOTOCELL AUTO ON/OFF mode.
2. Setting the controller
Setting: OFF mode
The Factory Default Settings on the controller are OFF mode. When the
transformer is set to AUTO (dusk till dawn) and the controller is in the OFF
mode, the transformer will supply uninterrupted power to the landscape lights
day and night. Refer to auto or timed settings for the controller as described
below.
Setting: AUTO mode
Press the Auto button on the controller. The Auto indicator turns on. The
PHOTOCELL AUTO ON/OFF mode is now activated. This setting allows the
controller to turn the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. In this setting,
motion sensing is defeated. Setting: TIME mode
- Press the Time button once. The 4h indicator turns on. The PHOTOCELL AUTO ON/ 4 HOURS OFF mode is now activated. This setting allows the controller to turn the lights on at dusk and off after 4 hours. Motion detection is activated after 4 hours.
- Press the Time button twice. The 6h indicator turns on. The PHOTOCELL AUTO ON/ 6 HOURS OFF mode is now activated. This setting allows the controller to turn the lights on at dusk and off after 6 hours. Motion detection is activated after 6 hours.
- Press the Time button three times. The 8h indicator turns on. The PHOTOCELL AUTO ON/ 8 HOURS OFF mode is now activated. This setting allows the controller to turn the lights on at dusk and off after 8 hours. Motion detection is activated after 8 hours.
- With the controller in Time settings, the controller automatically goes into motion detection mode following the selected Time setting. When motion is detected in this period, the controller will turn the lights back on for a period of 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the lights will turn off and the controller will revert to motion detection mode. Motion detection mode is automatically turned off at dawn.
Indicator Auto Shut-down
The LED indicator light on the controller turns off after approximately 1
minute. Press any button on the controller to turn on the LED indicator light.
Maintenance
Replacing the battery
IMPORTANT: Dispose of the battery in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
NOTE: Use one 14430 Lithium Phosphate, 300mAh, 3.2V rechargeable battery. For best performance, replace with a new Lithium Phosphate rechargeable battery every 2 years.
- Loosen the four lock screws (E), and remove the backplate (F) from the controller body (A).
- Remove the old battery (D).
- Replace with a new 14430 Lithium Phosphate, 3.2V rechargeable battery. The recommended replacement battery capacity should be 300mAh to 450mAh. Replace the backplate (F) to the controller body (A) with the four lock screws (E).
- Put the transformer in either “TEST” or “ON” mode and reprogram the controller. See “2 Setting the controller” on page 5.
Care and Cleaning
- The motion sensor lens and photocell eye should be cleaned periodically with a damp cloth to help maintain optimum performance.
- Do not use any cleaners with chemicals, solvents, or harsh abrasives.
- From time to time, ensure the connection between the quick clip connector of the controller and the low voltage cable establishes effective contact.
Troubleshooting
Problem
| Possible Cause|
Solution
---|---|---
The lights come on day and night.| The controller is set to OFF mode.| Set the
controller to AUTO or TIME mode.
The battery is dead.| Replace with a new battery.
The battery is reaching the end of its useful life.| Make sure the charging
connection between the quick clip connector and the low voltage cable
establishes effective contact to charge the battery.
The controller is mounted in a dark area.| Reposition the controller so that
the photocell eye gets enough light level during daytime.
The plug connection between the controller and the transformer is loose.|
Ensure the plug between the controller and the transformer is securely
connected.
The plug connection between the controller and the transformer is in the wrong
way.| The bi-pin connector is polarized, make sure it is inserted into the
mating socket of the transformer in the correct way.
The lights do not switch on at dusk.| The controller is mounted where there is
too much ambient light.| Reposition the controller, and avoid the photocell
eye pointing at nighttime light sources such as windows, porch lights, and
street lights.
The lights switch on for no
apparent motion detected.
| The controller senses small animals or automobile traffic.| Reposition the
controller so that the motion sensor is positioned away from the area of
movement.
The controller will not program.| The controller was recently installed with a
new battery.| Put the transformer in either “TEST” or “ON” mode before you
reprogram the controller.
