Installation Tips

  • If available, use blue loctite or threadsealer on any threaded connection.
  • We’ve included extra parts in many of the lighting and wiring kits. Things like solder seals, heat shrink, extra hardware, and zip ties are included in an effort to simplify and streamline installation. If you have extra parts, that is okay.
  • Also included are extra pigtails (cable with bare wires on one end and waterproof connector on the other) for installations that don’t use our wire harness and dimmer. You can use these to install your lights with other switches, dimmers, and can-bus systems.
  • RUBY lights have reverse voltage protection built in, you won’t ruin your lights if you wire them backward. They just won’t turn on.

You made it! Welcome to the next level in lighting and adventure with RUBY Moto. Thank you for your purchase, we are excited for you. Below are some simple instructions to get you on your way installing your new lights.

There are many ways to install your new lights on your bike. This guide serves as a reference point, not as an exact must-follow manual. If you don’t have the time or interest in installing your own lights, reach out to your local shop to perform the installation.

* _the “fade” on the GSA is either white or purple, depending on which side of the bike you are working on. Either way, white or purple on the BMW side will connect to the green on the RUBY._**

Most customers that are installing a pair of R7 and R4 (our R23 kit) on a GSA, opt to replace their factory BMW fog lights with the R4. By cutting and solder sealing (included in your kit) your R4 in their place, you can continue to use the stock switch on your handlebars to turn your R4 on/off. The R4 will not throw an error code on the GSA’s can-bus controller as the draw is similar to the factory fog light. The R7 are then wired into the RUBY wire harness and dimmer switch as per the stock install instructions.

Replacing your BMW fog lights with R4

  1. Remove the factory BMW fog lights. You will reuse the stock bolt to mount your R4 to the crash bar boss.
  2. Install the GSA crash bar mounts to the R4, then use the stock bolt to connect to the crash bars.
  3. Cut the factory BMW fog light wire several inches back. You’ll want to give yourself enough of the factory wire to work with. There will be extra wire from the R8 that will need to be coiled an zip-tied out of the way.
  4. Slit the BMW wire sheathing back one inch. This will expose the four BMW wires. The orange wire is not needed for the installation and can be capped with some of the smaller heat shrink (included).
  5. Connect the pigtail to the R4. Cut the pigtail to your desired length.
  6. Using the wiring table reference above, connect the wires from the pigtail to the BMW wiring. Twist the connections together so that you can do a simple test to ensure you are wired appropriately. Be sure to test the on/off on the factory switch. Also be sure to test this with the motorcycle running. BMW’s can-bus system will automatically turn the fog lights off unless the bike is running. All RUBY lights have reverse voltage protection built in, meaning that if you wire the lights incorrectly they wont be damaged.
  7. Once correct wiring is confirmed, slide the large heat shrink down the bare wire and out of the way. Slide solder seals (clear heat shrink with red banding and solder in the middle) down each wire on one side, then connect the wires from the pigtail to the BMW wiring referring to the wiring color table above. Please note, the wiring colors from the left to the right side of the bike are different (white vs purple).
  8. After the wires are in place, use a heat gun or lighter on the solder seals to solder and heat shrink the connections.
  9. Test the lights again. Once confirmed, route the extra wires such that they wont be pinched by moving parts, or melted by exhaust headers. Use zip-ties to manage the extra wire.

MOUNTING

Mount your lights on a level surface, with the face of the lights perpendicular to the ground. Adjust as necessary. Check all connections after going for a ride.
