Boring/Turning/Shaping the Mill
- Mark centers on both the body and cap. If using the lathe to bore, mount the body using a 4-jaw chuck.
- Using the lathe drill chuck, bore an 11/2″ diameter hole through the entire length of the body.
- Mount the cap using a 4-jaw chuck. Bore an 11/16″ diameter hole 5/16″ deep. Next, bore a 7mm hole through the remaining length of the cap stock centered in the previously drilled hole.
- Install the Drive Assembly (B) using the provided three screws into the bottom of the cap.
- Create a jamb chuck to fit snuggly into one end of the 11/2″ bore. Mount the cap onto the body then mount between centers using the 4-jaw chuck and live center which will seat in the 7mm hole.
- Turn to your desired profile.
- Sand the mill up to 320 grit.
- Apply a food-safe finish of your choice.
Dimension Notes
The dimensions shown below are the bore diameters for the body and cap of the grinder. The outside dimensions will vary to suit your design, but the wall thickness should be at least 1/4″. The overall finished length, body, and cap will vary, depending on the grinder mechanism chosen, but the bore dimensions will remain the same. The finished length of the base and cap will be as follows. Ensure all parts are cut to length and ends are square. For an 8″ mechanism, body 6″ and cap 2″. For a 10″ mechanism, body 81/8″ and cap 2″.
Assembly
- Note: When gluing the grinder mechanism, it should be 1/4″ in from the bottom of the body.
- Mix and spread epoxy over the ribs of the grinder mechanism. We recommend a 5-minute epoxy.
- Insert the Grinder Mechanism (A) threaded portion of the drive shaft first into the finished bottom of the turned body. Ensure the bottom of the mechanism is 1/4″ in from the bottom of the finished body.
- Place the finished cap over the threaded portion of the drive shaft ensuring 3/8″ of thread projection. Make any necessary height adjustments at this point.
- Do not install the threaded adjustment knob at this time. Allow the epoxy to fully cure.
- Once the epoxy has fully cured, fill the chamber with either salt crystals or peppercorns and install the Threaded Adjustment Knob (C).
- For a finer grind turn the Threaded Adjustment Knob (C) clockwise; for a coarser grind, turn counterclockwise.
