CONNECTIONS
PROGRAMMING
- Open the driver’s door, and keep open during the programming process.
- Cycle the ignition on and wait 5 seconds, or until the factory display screens reads LINEIN.
- Connect the AXTC-FD2harness to the AXTC-FD2interface, and then to the wiring harness in the vehicle.
- Locate the Volume Up button on the steering wheel. Program the interfaceby tapping the Volume Up button at a heartbeat pace until the LED light stops flashing.
- The LED light will flash Green & Red while the interface programs the radio to the steering wheel controls. Once programmed, the LED light will go out, then produce a pattern which will identify the radio type installed.
- The LED light will go out, then once again quickly flash Green & Red while the interface programs itself to the vehicle. Once programmed, the LED light will go out again, then turn solid Green.
- Cycle the ignition off, then back on.
- Test all functions of the installation for proper operation.
TROUBLESHOOTING
-
If the interface fails to function, press and release the reset button, then repeat the programming process from step 4 to try again.

Final LED Feedback
At the end of programming the LED light will turn Solid Green which indicates programming was successful. If the LED light didn’t turn Solid Green, reference the list below to understand which programming section the problem may stem from.
LED Light | Radio Programming Section | Vehicle Programming Section |
---|---|---|
Solid Green | Pass | Pass |
Slow Red Flash | Fail | Pass |
Slow Green Flash | Pass | Fail |
Solid Red | Fail | Fail |
Note: If the LED light shows Solid Green for Pass (indicating everything
programmed correctly), yet the steering wheel controls don’t work, check to
ensure that the 3.5mm jack is plugged in, and also plugged into the correct
jack on the radio.
Once corrected, press the reset button, then program again.

Metra recommends MECP certified technicians
If the AXTC-FD2’s LED light didn’t turn solid Green at the end of the vehicle programming sequence (step 6 from the AXTC-FD2 instructions), but flashed slowly Green instead, this means the AXTC-FD2 didn’t detect the vehicle. Follow the steps below to trace down where the problem may lie. If any of the following steps are performed, reset and reprogram the AXTC-FD2 per the vehicle specific document.
Is the interface programmed?
Make sure the AXTC-FD2 is programmed exactly as the vehicle specific document
is worded. The upper display should read Line In before programming the AXTC-
FD2. If the upper display doesn’t read Line In, make sure the Metra dash kit
(sold separately) is plugged in and working. Once the display reads Line In,
tap the Volume Up button on the the steering wheel at a heartbeat pace. Try
tapping the Volume Up button at different speeds if no success after a couple
attempts.
Does the factory equipment work?
Reinstall the factory radio and any electronic modules that are unplugged.
Test the steering wheel control buttons, starting with the Volume Up button.
If they don’t work 100%, they will need to be repaired before using the AXTC-
FD2.
Does the interface have power?
Connect the leads from a digital multimeter (DMM) to the Black (pin-7) and
Yellow (pins 1 & 11*) wires from the AXTC-FD2’s 20-pin connector. The meter
should read roughly 12-volts DC. If there’s no power there, trace the wires
back to the factory harness and test the factory wires.
- Check each wire one at a time
Does the interface have a good ground?
Still not working? Cut the Black ground wire from the AXTC-FD2 loose, crimp a
ring terminal onto it, then secure it to a good chassis point in the vehicle.
If the wire needs slightly extended, use the same gauge wire, along with a
proper terminal to extend the wire. Soldering is also acceptable. Do not use
tapping style connectors.
Update the AXTC-FD2
If all troubleshooting steps have been performed and the AXTC-FD2 still
doesn’t go solid Green at the end of the programming sequence, update the\
AXTC-FD2 to the latest firmware, then try programming once more.
If the AXTC-1 still doesn’t go solid Green at the end of the programming
sequence, contact Tech Support at 1-800-253-TECH. Be prepared to perform some
tests in the vehicle when you contact Tech Support, and have the VIN of the
vehicle and the Product Identification Number on the bottom of the AXTC-FD2
noted.
