HOW to Choosing The Right Light Bulb
Learning how to choose the right light bulb is as important as selecting the perfect light fixture. Understanding your options and which ones match the room and the fixture is a critical element of lighting.
The top things you have to consider when choosing the right light bulb:
- Bulb Fitting Type
- Brightness – Watts & Lumens
- Warm or Cold Light – Kelvin Colour Temperature
- Bulb Type – Incandescent, Halogen, Fluorescent (CFL), and LED
Bulb Fitting Type
Which light bulb fitting type do you need? Understanding your fitting type is
the first thing you have to figure out before you choose the right light bulb.
That is dictated by the fixture. you can read the specs to see what fitting
type your bulb needs to be.
The most common is the E26 / E12 / GU10. use the graphic here which shows some of the most common fitting types.
Watts & Lumens
Which brightness level do you want? There is a direct relationship between
the watts needed to power a bulb and the number of lumens that bulb will yield
based upon the bulb type (LED, Halogens, Fluorescent, Incandescent). here is a
brief explanation of each. Watts and lumens (brightness) In the past, when
almost everyone filled their homes with incandescent bulbs, the brightness was
measured in watts, which is a measure of power. Since the introduction of
energy-saving bulbs, this is a less useful brightness measurement, as new
bulbs use much less energy to produce the same amount of light. Then, on the
other hand, the light output is measured in lumens. The higher the number of
lumens, the brighter the light.
Here is the table to view the equivalent output of watts & lumens for traditional-style incandescents and the three types of energy-saving bulbs. (LEDS, Halogens, and compact fluorescent lamps).
Warm or Cold Light – Kelvin Colour Temperature
- What colour temperature do you want? Warm light or cold light? The colour of the light is measured on the Kelvin scale, which is a measure of temperature. In short, the lower the kelvin temperature number, the more yellow (warm) the light will be. The higher the kelvin temperature number, the more blue (cold) the light will be.
- Some light bulb manufacturers often refer to the “colour temperature” in the packaging. Most people have become accustomed to the warm yellow light emitted by the ancient incandescent bulb, which is 2,700 on the Kelvin scale. The midday sunlight is about 5,500k, the sunset or sunrise lighting is around 2,500k and a candle is around 1,600k.
Bulb Type – Incandescent, Halogen, Fluorescent (CFL), and LED
- Which bulb type do you prefer to use? Except for the traditional incandescent bulb, the three main technologies for light bulbs are Halogen, CFL, and LED. Which light bulb type reigns supreme? There are many variables – they all have different costs, lifespans, and energy-saving abilities. It depends on what you want and what you pay.
- Hopefully, now you feel a little more informed and have made all the key decisions. You know the fitting type you should look for in the box, the light colour and brightness you want, and the difference between an incandescent, CFL, an LED and a halogen. Go to purchase the bulb which the perfect suit for you and enjoy our Behiya’s Vanity Light!!
