Installation considerations

Methods of extraction

The very best method of clearing the kitchen of unwanted odours is by connecting the appliance to an exhaust duct and venting to the outside atmosphere via the ceiling or an exterior wall. Suitable ducting kits may be purchased from your local Howdens depot or online.
You do not need carbon filters when using the external ducting mode.

Extraction via exhaust ducting (vented outside) – no carbon filters required

  • Ducting kits are supplied separately.
  • Never use the hood in areas where devices with exhaust pipes connected to the outside are already operating unless perfect ventilation can be guaranteed.
  • There must be adequate ventilation in the room when the cooker hood is used at the same time as an appliance burning gas or other fuels.
  • Connect the external ducting kit to the outlet of the cooker hood.

Carbon filters are not required if the hood is to be ducted out.

Extraction via recirculation (vented internally) – carbon filters required

  • For extraction via recirculation, install carbon filters.
  • These can be ordered separately from your local Howdens Depot or online. Part No. LAM2014.
  • Ensure power is switched off to the cooker hood before installing/changing the carbon filters.
  • Ensure that air can escape the cabinet.

Install carbon filter – recirculation mode (vented internally)

  • Carbon filters – supplied separately
  • Carbon filters are only required when the appliance is installed in recirculation mode.
  • Before attempting to install the carbon filter, ensure power to the cooker hood is switched off.
  • Carbon filters have a limited life. We advise changing them when there is a noticeable drop in performance. The intervals between changing the filters will depend entirely upon the amount of cooking done, but on average a carbon filter will last 900 cooking hours – 3 to 5 years
  • Replacement carbon filters may be purchased from your local Howdens depot or online. Part No: LAM2014

Install carbon filter

  • Open the cover panel.
  • Remove the grease filter(s).
  • Install the carbon filter.
  • Replace grease filters and close the cover panel.

Recirculation mode

  • If the recirculation mode has been chosen, always set the recirculation programme on the cooker hood.

  • Programme the carbon filter indicator;

  • After installing a new carbon filter, programme the indicator.

  • The cooker hood motor MUST be running.

  • Press (2) and (3) at the same time for 3 seconds until the red LED flashes 3 times.

Electrical connections

Important: Ensure that the electricity supply is switched off before connecting.
When fitting in recirculation mode (with carbon filters), ensure the cable is shortened and securely held in place; or a cable grid is fitted to prevent the loose cable from falling back into the motor cavity.
Your appliance must be connected to fixed wiring via the use of a double pole switched fused spur outlet with at least 3mm contact separation, the isolation switch must be accessible after installation. (See technical data for fuse rating).

  • The appliance should be connected by a suitably qualified person. The product must be installed under all local regulations.
  • The terminology DOUBLE POLE -/+ means that both the live and neutral supplies are switched and disconnected at the same time.
  • The terminations labelled SUPPLY are the connections for the internal house wiring.
  • The terminations labelled LOAD are for connection to the appliance.

IMPORTANT: The wires in the mains lead are coloured under the following code:

As the colours of the wires in the mains lead of this appliance may not correspond with the coloured markings identifying the terminals in your spur box, proceed as follows;

  • The blue wire must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter
  • ‘N’ or coloured BLACK .
  • The brown wire must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter
  • ‘L’ or coloured RED .
  • The green and yellow wire must be connected to the terminal which is marked with the letter
  • ‘E’ or symbol.

Troubleshooting

What might be the cause of…?

Check that the grease filters and carbon filters (if vented internally) are fitted correctly.
Excessive noise: Airflow noises in the extractor ducting have a stronger impact on noise levels than the cooker hood itself. To help with this please ensure the following are checked.

  • The hood has the correct size ducting.
  • There are no restrictions within the ducting or outlet.
  • The minimum number of 90-degree bends has been used.
  • The hood has been secured to the wall correctly.
  • The cable or any building material hasn’t been dropped into the fan area.
  • In re-circulation mode, make sure the flue vents/grilles are not covered.
  • For canopy cooker hoods, make sure there is a hole in the cabinet for the air to escape and that there is no shelf directly above the outlet.

Poor Extraction: The effectiveness of the cooker hood often comes from the relationship between the cooker hood and the exhaust duct components. To help with this, make sure all the following are checked.

  • The hood has the correct size ducting.
  • There are no restrictions within the ducting or outlet.
  • The minimum number of 90-degree bends has been used.
  • Ducting doesn’t exceed the recommended length run for the model installed.
  • The hood should be switched on 10 minutes before and after cooking.
