Installation Instructions

  • Before you proceed with the installation of your new fuel pump, make sure you have completely diagnosed the cause of failure. Check the entire fuel delivery system, fuel filter, injectors, fuel pressure regulator, fuel lines chassis ground, fuse, relay and continuity of wiring.
  • Dirt and contamination is a major cause of fuel pump failure, you must completely drain, clean and flush the tank prior to installing the new pump.
  • You must replace the fuel pump filter on the inlet side of the pump to help prevent future pump failure and validate warranty.

Caution: Work in a well ventilated area as gasoline is involved. Do not smoke; do not work near flames or sparks.
Do not work near electric heaters or near appliances that use a pilot light. Always have a class “B” fire extinguisher close by. To help reduce the risks of fire always relieve the fuel system pressure before beginning the installation.
Step # 1 Relieve fuel system pressure.
The following procedures are typical, but consult your repair manual for the exact procedure for your vehicle.

  1. Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box.
  2. Start your engine and run until fuel pressure is reduced.
Turn off engine and try starting again to make sure the pressure is gone.

Step # 2 Disconnect the battery.
Disconnect the negative battery cable to eliminate the possibility of arcing or sparks. Step # 3 Empty the fuel tank.

  1. Using a gas caddy pump as much gasoline from the tank as possible.
  2. When disposing of fuel please follow your local city and state regulations for fuel disposal.
  3. Be aware that the tank will still have some gas left inside.

Step # 4 Remove the fuel tank.
The following procedures are typical, but consult your repair manual for the exact procedure for your vehicle.
Note: Not all vehicles require removal of fuel tank to access fuel pump but it is highly recommended for proper cleaning.

  1. Raise the vehicle on safety stands or lift, give yourself enough room to position a transmission jack under the tank.
  2. Disconnect the fuel lines; mark what line went to what fittings.
  3. Disconnect the electrical terminals.
  4. Loosen straps and lower tank.

Step # 5 Remove fuel pump from tank.
The following procedures are typical, but consult your repair manual for the exact procedure for your vehicle.

  1. Plug the filler neck holes on the pump and clean the area well.

  2. Mark the orientation of the fuel lines and the electrical connections.

  3. Remove the tank lock ring with the proper special fuel pump removal tool.
Caution: Do not use a hammer and Chisel or screwdriver to remove tank lock ring as a nearly empty fuel tank is still full of explosive vapors! A Chisel and hammer are a ready source of sparks.

  4. Clean the inside of tank completely. You may want to contact a local fuel tank repair shop for assistance.

  5. AS NEEDED

  • Damaged or faulty vehicle wiring is a leading cause of misdiagnosis and premature fuel pump failure
  • Wire harness must be replaced if included with new fuel pump
  • Other replacement harnesses available for purchase
  • Replace wom or deteriorated hoses and fittings

Step # 6 Replace fuel pump.
Note:
The physical appearance of the replacement pump may not be identical to the pump you are removing but it will perform exactly the same as the original pump.
Do not destroy or discard any of the hardware you removed from the original pump as it may be needed to re-install the pump. These kits are meant to be used in various pumps so extra hardware may be included and not needed for your application.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connections from pump; make sure you mark the orientation of the terminals.
  2. Remove the pump from the mounting bracket.
  3. Connect the new pump to the electrical connections with the same orientation as the old pump.
  4. Install the new strainer in the same position as the original. A new strainer is required to Validate the Warranty.
  5. Replace all “O” rings and hoses with new ones included in your kit as applicable.
  6. Position repaired assembly back in tank, being careful to mount it with the same original orientation as the old assembly.
  7. Install cam locking ring and tighten.
  8. Reconnect electrical connections and hose connections.
  9. Reconnect battery.
  10. Fill tank with clean fuel.
  11. With the ignition off, re-install the fuel pump fuse.
  12. Start the vehicle and check for leaks to ensure proper operation when installed, repair if necessary.

WARNING:
If fuel pump has supply and return lines, make sure the plastic bracket on I the hoses is securely fastened to the vehicle. Static electricity will be I grounded by using this bracket, eliminating arcing and possible fire.
If you received a GM module with a new connector, follow the wiring description.
