Tools & Materials
Standard Bits vs MatchFit Bits
You can use any 1/2″ x 14º dovetail bit. However, the top edges of the groove
will need to be sanded smooth after milling. The MatchFit Dovetail Router Bit
is engineered to route perfectly smooth Dovetail Tracks to minimize cleanup.

wood types (3/4″ or thicker):
void-free plywood (e.g. Baltic birch), standard MDF, or seasoned solid wood.
Required Tools (Not included)
*Optional but recommended.
Dovetail Track Instructions
Step 1 – Cut relief grooves**
TOOLS Router [A] and relief bit OR table saw [C] CUT DEPTH (D) 11/32″ (8.7mm)
(optional but recommended)
Cutting relief grooves before the dovetail grooves puts less stress on your
dovetail router bit.
This helps your dovetail bit last longer and ensures your tracks are straight.
Step 2 – Cut dovetail grooves
TOOLS Router [A] with 1/2″ x 14º dovetail bit [B] CUT DEPTH (D) 3/8″
(9.5mm) Cut along the center of your relief grooves to make your Dovetail
tracks. If using a regular dovetail bit make 1–2 cleanup passes to smooth the
edges.
TIP: For ease of use, use a small brush to apply a thin layer of paste
wax on the dovetail groove walls.
Step 3 – Creating dovetail grids**
Route
grooves 4″ (101.6mm) apart on center to provide compatibility with MatchFit
clamp track accessories.
Route all cross-grain tracks (1) first, then route the tracks along the grain
(2).
Mounting Jig Handle
Three options to attach the Jig Handle:
- Mount handle in any Dovetail Groove using the included Dovetail Track Nuts.
- Mount handle anywhere using your hardware in the 1/4″ (6.35mm) mounting holes.
- Temporarily attach handle using your pan or washer head wood screws through the 1/4″ (6.35mm) mounting holes.
