FAQ
-
Q: How do I know if my helmet is fitted properly?
A: Proper fitting includes ensuring the O-Brace wraps securely around and below the base of your skull and that the Interconnect Retention System fits snugly with equal tension on each strap. -
Q: Can I wash my helmet liner?
A: Yes, you can gently hand wash the helmet liner with mild soap and water. Allow it to air dry completely before reattaching it to the helmet.
This name is embossed on every WRSI Current, Current Pro and Moment helmet. It’s the name of a young kayaker who died doing what he loved—paddling the North Fork of Idaho’s Payette River. In honor of his memory, Lucas’s father, Gil, founded the Whitewater Research and Safety Institute to provide paddlers like Lucas with better safety gear and knowledge. Working with researchers and engineers at Johns Hopkins University, we developed a safer whitewater helmet—a helmet that put the best safety technology available in the hands of boaters at a reasonable cost. Today, we continue honoring the WRSI legacy, and Lucas’s memory, with a mission to empower adventure sports athletes with the equipment and knowledge they need to safely pursue their passions.
Technology
-
3-LAYER IMPACT ABSORPTION
A multi-impact shell combines with an EVA foam liner and a polyurethane sub- shell to effectively dissipate impacts. -
ANTI-ROTATION O-BRACE HARNESS
The adjustable O-brace harness conforms to the back of the head to help keep the helmet safely positioned. -
INTERCONNECT RETENTION SYSTEM
Interconnected straps securely hold the helmet in place under hydraulic forces. As the force of water pushes the helmet back, the interconnect system self-adjusts to hold the helmet firmly in place.
HELMET SIZING
FITTING AND ADJUSTING YOUR WRSI HELMET
Your WRSI helmet is designed to fit comfortably and securely for safe
performance on the water. Its O-Brace harness, Interconnect Retention System
and Custom Fit Kit work together to keep the helmet safely positioned even
under strong hydraulic forces. It’s important to properly fit and adjust your
helmet for optimum comfort and safety. Follow these instructions for best
results. Watch the video demonstration at wrsisafety.com/fit.
ADJUSTING THE ANTI-ROTATION O-BRACE HARNESS
When positioned properly, the O-Brace Harness should wrap around and below the
curve at the base of your skull. This helps to secure the helmet and prevent
it from rocking backward under hydraulic forces
- Determine if the O-Brace is adjusted properly. Your helmet’s O-Brace has been set to the middle position at manufacturing. If it doesn’t extend around and below the curve of your head, it should be adjusted lower. If it extends farther down than is comfortable, it can be adjusted to sit higher. The lowest position that is comfortable is the safest position for the O-brace.
- Lift up the helmet liner to expose the O-Brace connection at the back of the helmet. You will see four slots molded into the helmet’s sub-shell.
- To adjust the O-Brace, slide two fingers behind the plastic harness. Now, use your fingers to pry the lower tabs loose from the sub-shell. Some force is required.
- Reposition the O-Brace to a lower set of slots. Slide the upper pair of tabs into their slots, then use your thumb to snap the two lower tabs into their slots.
- Examine the newly adjusted O-Brace to see if it fits correctly. Reposition if necessary.
- Replace the helmet liner.
ADJUSTING THE INTERCONNECT RETENTION SYSTEM
The Interconnect Retention System is designed to self-adjust under hydraulic
forces to hold the helmet firmly in place. When adjusted properly, it should
fit snugly and keep the helmet in a level position on your head. It includes
three adjustment points: one at the chin and one at each “Y” in the webbing.
- Put the helmet on and pull down on the connectors at each “Y” in the webbing.
- The connectors should fit comfortably just below your ears. If they do not, simply slide the connectors up or down until they are positioned properly.
- Next, with the helmet resting in a level position on your head, check the tension of the two straps leading into each “Y” connector by pulling down on the connector. The two straps should have roughly equal tension, and there should be no slack in either strap.
- Adjust the “Y” connectors as necessary to achieve equal tension for all of the straps.
- After adjusting the straps, check to make sure the connecters are still positioned comfortably below the ear. Adjust if necessary.
- Finally, tighten the chin strap. Make sure the strap is positioned well back against the throat, not on the point of the chin.

CE EN 1385 WARNING
No helmet can protect the wearer against all possible impacts. The helmet is
designed to be retained by a strap under the lower jaw. To be effective, a
helmet must fit and be worn correctly. To check for correct fit, place helmet
on head and make any adjustments indicated. Securely fasten retention system.
Grasp the helmet and try to rotate it to the front and rear. A correctly
fitted helmet should be comfortable and should not move forward to obscure
vision or backward
to expose the forehead. Store in a cool, dry place. No attachments should be
made to the helmet; do not modify this helmet in any way. The helmet is
designed to absorb shock by partial destruction of the shell and liner. This
damage may not be visible. Therefore, if subjected to a severe blow, the
helmet should be destroyed and replaced, even if it appears undamaged. The
helmet may be damaged and rendered ineffective by petroleum and petroleum
products, cleaning agents, chemicals, paints, adhesives and other solvents,
without the damage being visible to the user. A helmet has a limited lifespan
in use and should be replaced when it shows obvious signs of wear. This helmet
should remain in manufacturer packaging until the point of consumer purchase.
This helmet should not be used by children while climbing or doing other
activities where there is a risk of hanging or strangulation if the child gets
trapped while wearing the helmet. This helmet is not designed for other sports
or motor vehicle use.
REPLACEMENT : This helmet is made to absorb some of the energy of a blow.
Even though damage may not be apparent, it is imperative that any helmet
having suffered from an impact in an accident or received a similarly severe
blow, deep scratches or other abuse should be replaced. The helmet should be
replaced after 5-10 years of careful use (except
in case of damage/accident or a hard fall which can cause invisible cracks).
Please dispose of your helmet at the end of its service life. Contact your
local waste disposal company for correct disposal.
