General Safety Messages

WARNING: STEERING CONTROL HAZARD.
Failure to obey the following warnings could result in death or serious injury:

  • This is a custom kit and should be installed by an expert marine mechanic.
  • The boat should be operated with caution until the steering system has been thoroughly checked out under normal operating conditions to ensure that the installation is correct and complete.
  • Read these instructions thoroughly before beginning installation.
  • Use the parts provided only as instructed and only use the parts provided. Do not substitute parts.

NOTICE: In order to obtain the best steering performance, the outboard motors must be installed and lubricated and the trim tab adjusted in accordance with the motor and boat manufacturer’s specifications.

Preparation

This section describes the procedure for orienting the engines and customizing the tie bar length.

2.1 Preparing for Installation
Outboard motors must be installed and placed on centers according to the motor manufacturer’s instructions and the ABYC Safety Standards for Small Craft.

DOMETIC SA27252P Dual Outboard Service Kit - Motor
Position

1 Motor Position

① Attachment Hole
② Distance between Attachment Holes

  1. Set both motors in a dead-ahead position and adjust for any toe-in or out in accordance with the motor manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Measure the center to center distance between the attachment holes in the tiller arms, then subtract 1-3/4 in. (44 mm) from that dimension to arrive at the proper tie bar length.
  3. Cut the tie bar to the proper length, taking care not to damage the threads.
  4. Dress the lead of the thread with a file if necessary.

Components

2 Tie Bar Components

① Lock Nut 3/8-24
② Rod End
③ Threaded Tie Bar| ④ Hex Nut 1/2-20
⑤ Flange Bolt
⑥ Attachment Hole
---|---

  1. Thread one hex nut onto each end of the tie bar leaving approximately 2 in. (50 mm) of thread exposed.

  2. Thread the rod end fully onto each end of the tie bar then back off equally until the holes in the rod ends align with the tiller arm attachment holes.
Do not exceed three full turns on each end.

  3. Run the hex nuts up against the rod ends, then gripping the rod ends with vise grips or a similar tool, torque the hex nuts securely against the rod ends to prevent unthreading.

3.2 Installing the Tie Bar

  1. Place the tie bar assembly in position beneath the tiller arms. See Figure 2.
Johnson and Evinrude tiller arms have two attachment holes. The tie bar assembly must be mounted in the outer holes. The inner holes (closest to the motor) are for steering cable linkage.

  2. Install one flange head bolt upward through each rod end and thread into the tiller arm attachment hole.

  3. Thread on lock nuts and torque hardware to 200 lb in. (23 Nm) minimum.
Do not exceed 250 lb in. (28 Nm)

  4. Operate each engine independently through the tilt and turn range to insure that no binding occurs.

Maintenance

WARNING: STEERING CONTROL HAZARD.
Loosening or separation of one or more fasteners may cause failure in the steering system. Failure to obey this warning could result in death or serious injury.

This section describes maintenance practices to follow once the product installation is complete.

  • After a few hours of operation following the installation and periodically thereafter, re-torque all the fasteners and check the steering for security and integrity.
  • Inspect periodically for corrosion. All metal parts meet or exceed the applicable specifications for corrosion resistance; however, with extended operation under extreme conditions, corrosion may occur and affected parts should be replaced.

Disposal

Place the packaging material in the appropriate recycling waste bins, whenever possible. Consult a local recycling center or specialist dealer for details about how to dispose of the product in accordance with all applicable national and local regulations.
