Assembly instructions and usage guidelines are detailed on pages 7 to 9 of the manual.

Dear Customer,

  • Thank you for purchasing the Sensei composter that has been developed in cooperation with the Institute of Microbiology. The composter should help you to ferment plant-based kitchen waste (waste from lettuce, vegetables, fruit – please make large pieces a little smaller) and protect aromas and flies (replaceable activated carbon filter) so that you shall have to dispose of organic waste which is excellently suitable for your composter, the raised bed, or the bin, to a lesser extent (period of between 2 and 4 weeks).
  • The composter is made from a “biocomposite “ – a polypropylene that is neutral to groundwater and is warranted not to contain bisphenol A, formaldehyde, and heavy metals with an approx. 40% wood and pulp content – in addition to it being sustainable and recyclable.
  • This product is intended for private use and not for commercial purposes.

Required tools

Attention: This composter is made of bio-composite (natural material), therefore there may be differences of color.

Assembly instructions

  • Take the four enclosed legs and insert those into the recesses in the base of the composter and fix them with the included screws (see fig. B).
  • Push the O-ring seal onto the thread of the drain tap and then insert it through the drilled hole into the bottom of the composter, before screwing the brass nut hand tight from the inside.
  • For assembly of the piston please put the piston rod in the hole of the piston, turn slowly until the holes of the piston and rod match, and insert the bolt as long until it clicks when the end expands and secures the bolt from losing (see fig. D).
  • To insert the activated carbon filter, please take out the cover and one activated carbon filter from the small parts package and insert the filter into the indentation; insert the cover from above and press it into the retainer – please replace it every 4-6 months, or in the event of an odor developing. You can order replacement filters from www.juwel-garden.com.

Instructions for use

  • Turn the previously assembled drain tap off so that no fluids can be discharged.

  • Pull the plunger up as far as possible each time before opening the cover.

  • Lift the cover together with the plunger; you can secure the cover on the composter as shown (see fig. C).

  • Fill the composter with waste vegetables or fruit (no meat or bones, no pasta products or rice, and no wood). You can also include small amounts of leftover coffee grounds or eggshells, as well as leftover tea, as these compost well later.

  • Scatter a tablespoon of Bokashi granulate per two liters of organic waste over the waste. Replace the cover with the plunger onto the composter, push the plunger as far down as possible, and compact the organic waste inside of the composter by applying moderate pressure – Finished!
Please note: the organic waste has to be compacted by pressing the plunger down as this displaces the oxygen – fermentation takes place under a lack of oxygen!

  • Fluids are released from the waste within just a few days as a result of microbiological activity where they are collected in the lower part of the Sensei. Please drain the fluid into a collecting vessel by opening the drain tap several times per week. This fluid contains a high nitrogen concentration which makes it excellently suitable as a biofertilizer for your plants (it must get diluted with water at 1:30) – or it can be used as a gentle drain cleaner. Residual fluids can simply be poured down the drain.

  • Please ensure that the fluid level in the Sensei never gets higher than the sieve in the interior container as this could otherwise be discharged when pressing the plunger down.

  • If the interior container is almost full of fermented organic waste, take hold of the handle and bring the entire Sensei to the organic waste bin or composter. You can then empty the Sensei by strongly pressing the plunger down, draining the fluid off, and opening the cover. You can now remove the interior container with both of the recessed grips and empty it onto your raised bed, composter, or the organic waste and use it as an organic fertilizer.

  • Rinse the interior container with clear water (do not use a cleaning agent!) and reinsert it – please close the drain tap. There is a small hole in the piston which is provided with a fine metal sieve. Please also clean this metal sieve from adhering residues.

We hope this composter does you a good service and generates organic fertilizer – please contact kund@juwel.com should you have any questions or suggestions.
