INSPECTION REQUIRED

LIFESPAN – WEAR – INSPECTION REQUIRED

  • The lifespan of each LOOK component depends on numerous factors, such as the size of the cyclist and the conditions of use. Impacts, falls, inappropriate use or generally rough use can compromise the structural integrity of the components and considerably reduce their lifespan.
  • Certain components are also subject to wear over time. Have your bicycle checked regularly by a qualified mechanic, to ensure the absence of cracks, deformities or signs of wear and tear.
  • If the inspection reveals deformities, cracks, signs of impact or strain, even if they are mild, you must immediately replace the relevant component. Any components that have experienced excessive wear must also be immediately replaced. The frequency of inspection depends on numerous factors. Consult your approved LOOK distributor to agree on the plan that suits you best.

Read first:
Cycling is a dangerous activity by nature. To reduce the risk of serious injury, you must ensure that your bicycle is suitably maintained and that each component is correctly installed and adjusted. Always wear a helmet when cycling and ensure that you are aware of the highway code and that you respect it. Beware of the dangers of the road and traffic. Be aware of current applicable laws in the country in which you are cycling. If you are cycling at night, it is not enough just to see; you must also be seen. Reflectors are not sufficient and are no replacement for front and rear lights. It is strongly advisable to wear a reflective garment and indeed is obligatory in some countries.

GENERAL PRESENTATION OF THE CRANKSET

LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(1\)

Distinctive feature of the zed 3 crankset:
The LOOK ZED 3 crankset is the first AERO carbon monobloc crankset. The cranks and the star chainring support are secured to the axle of the crankset to achieve as-yet-unequalled rigidity. Entirely made of high-strength carbon fibre, it is both light and strong, fluid and aerodynamic. The ZED 3 is the fruit of numerous years of research and development and includes two technologies patented by LOOK:

  1. The variation in the length of the cranks using TRILOBE technology. As such, with a crankset, you can easily select from 3 specific crank lengths for cycling, by turning the offset screw a third of a turn now your pedal axle. This is a quick change and does not require any special tools and allows you to cover:
    • Size 1 crankset: 155 mm, 157.5 mm or 160 mm
    • Size 2 crankset: 162.5 mm, 165 mm or 167.5 mm
    • Size 3 crankset: 170 mm, 172.5 mm or 175 mm
  2. The possibility to fit two double chainrings with an inter-axle distance of 130mm or a compact inter-axle distance of 110mm. The branches of the star feature a double set of fastenings that make it possible to accommodate the 2 standard chainrings on the interior side.

FITTING

FITTING THE CHAINRINGS ON TO THE CRANKSET

LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(2\)

It is recommended to fit the LOOK ZED 3 chainrings with the ZED 3 crankset. These LOOK ZED 3 chainrings are developed to be compatible with the different groups and are optimised for weight gain, gear shifts and rigidity.

However, there is a fittings kit for standard chainrings containing 5 screws and 5 struts and the double or compact chainrings that match the constraints described below can equip the ZED 3 crankset:

  • contain 5 mounting holes
  • have an inter-axle distance of 110 mm or 130 mm
  • have an effective clamping width of 4 mm for the exterior chainring
  • have a perfectly flat exterior surface for the exterior chainring
  • have an effective clamping width of 3.5 mm for the interior chainring
  • accept the placement of the specific LOOK inter-chainring struts with a width of 3.5 mm

For any other chainrings, such as oval chainrings, please refer to the compatibility table available from chainring suppliers and on the website www.lookcycle.com.

LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(3\)

Fitting the chainrings on to the crankset:
the chainrings must only be fitted to the ZED 3 crankset when the crankset is detached from the frame.

  1. Start by dismantling the crankset before fitting the chainrings (see § dismantling the ZED).
  2. Before fitting any chainrings to the ZED 3 crankset, be sure to check that the chainring support surfaces are clean, smooth and free from any elements that could become lodged between the chainring and the crankset. This could significantly affect how flat your chainrings are and therefore how effective your gear changes are.

FITTING THE CHAINRINGS Fig 5

  • Take the large chainring and position it with the left crank. The inscriptions engraved on the chainring must face inwards.
  • Position the exterior chainring, taking care to align the chain’s anti-skip cone with the right crank.
  • Position the 5 specific inter-chainring struts for ZED 3 chain rings (black, no split and width of 3.2mm).LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(5\)
  • Take the small chainring and position it using the left crank. The inscriptions engraved on the chainring must face inwards.
  • Ensure that the alignment mar-ker is in line with the right crank. Place 1 drop of thread lock (type Loctite 243) on the threads of the chainring mounting screw.
  • Screw the screws into the inserts in the crankset without forgetting to sandwich in the inter-chainring struts. Slowly tighten each screw evenly, without forcing them, to a torque of 8Nm.LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(6\)

Checking how the chainrings have been fitted:

When you fit the chainrings, check:

  • The orientation of the chainrings so that the gears change correctly.
  • The position of the chain’s anti-skip cone on the exterior chainring to avoid the chain becoming stuck between the chainring and the crank. The chain’s anti-skip cone must be behind the crank.

Attention:
LOOK recommends the use of its specific chainrings for the ZED crankset for the following reasons:

  • The specific shape of the teeth on each LOOK chainring, which facilitates the gear changes, was developed to respond to being fitted to the double and/or compact ZED star.
  • The strength and rigidity of the LOOK chainrings have been optimised particularly thanks to a larger support surface where each branch is attached.

CHECKING THE FIT OF THE CHAINRINGS Fig 6

FITTING THE CRANKSET ON TO THE FRAME

Fitting the crankset on to the frame:
since the ZED crankset is monobloc, the left crank will have to be passed through the frame to fit it, as shown in Figure 10. The right pedal can be fitted to the crankset before it is fitted to the frame, which is not the case for the left pedal, which will have to be fitted once the ZED crankset is correctly fitted to the frame.

  • There are no specific tools required to fit the crankset, but it is still recommended to refer to your specialist LOOK retailer to fit or remove the crankset.
  • Before attaching the crankset to the frame, check that the bearings are correctly attached to the frame (see figures 7 and 8).
  • Before attaching the crankset to the frame, check that no parts are missing from the whole set that is pre-fitted on the crankset (see figures 1 and 9).

Attention:

  • Remove all dust and clean the bearing seats in the bottom bracket with the recommended lubricant.
  • Never wash your bicycle with a pressurized jet. High-pressure water, even the water from a hose pipe, can, despite the gaskets, enter into the bottom bracket and irremediably damage the components and bearings in the ZED crankset. Wash your crankset when it is attached to your bicycle. Delicately clean the carbon parts with a soft cloth, water and neutral soap.
  • Do not leave the ZED crankset inside a car parked in the sun, nor near the radiator or any other source of heat.

Attaching and detaching the bearings in the frame:
The ZED 3 crankset requires the 2 bearings to be fitted directly in the frame. For improved comfort, they are also glued. To avoid damaging the bearings when attaching and/or detaching, it is strongly recommended to use specific tools. LOOK has created a tool for retailers. It is therefore essential that these steps are performed by a specialist LOOK retailer.

Adjusting the length of the cranks:
Position the arrow on the support washer facing the desired length marker then position the trilobe nut on the other side in the same position. Screw the pedal to the recommended torque. The ZED 3 crankset is compatible with every pedal on the market.

Attention:

  • Carefully check the position of the trilobite nut in each of the two cranks before cycling to be sure that you have positioned the right or left cranks at the same lengths. If the right and left cranks are different lengths this can cause serious physical injury.
  • The recommended torques must be respected when tightening the pedals (20 Nm minimum for LOOK pedals). Failure to respect the torques can cause damage to the product and, as a result, lead to accidents, physical injuries or death.
  • Degrease and clean the surface of the nut that is in contact with the crank before fitting the pedals. Dust and/or any other particles on the trilobite nut or on the crank could damage the crankset or pedal.
  • The right nut (to be fitted on the right crank) is identified by the letter R, and the left nut (to be fitted on the left crank) features the letter L.LOOK-Zed-3-11-Speed-Crankset-FIG- \(22\)

FITTING THE ADAPTORS

Fitting the BSC adaptors:
For compatibility reasons, a BSC threaded bottom bracket can be fitted to a frame created for a ZED crankset. To do this, there are adaptors to be fitted instead of the 6810 bearings as shown in figure 12.

Attention:

  • This operation requires specific tools, it is essential that it is completed by a specialist Look retailer.
  • After fitting the crankset and bearings, check that the interior bearing seats in the bottom bracket of the frame are clear of any dust or other particles that could damage the adaptors.
  • The M5x60mm screws must be tightened to the recommended torque: 5Nm.
