DESCRIPTION
8-channel audio mixer
The OMNITRONIC MZD-88 is an audio mixer with matrix system of 8 input and 8
outputs which allows for multiple output configurations and inputs mixing. The
8 outputs are divided in 4 groups. Thus it’s possible to supply 4 different PA
zones with a stereo output by routing different input signals to these zones
without having to change the cable configuration. It’s also possible to obtain
8 outputs with different mixing as every input has its own level and PAN
controls.
- Matrix input assignment: 8 audio inputs are freely assignable to each of the 8 outputs
- Division of the 8 outputs into 4 groups; each with separate level and pan control per channel
- Ultra flexible configuration modes; distributes the signal of up to 8 audio sources to e.g. 8 mono zones or 4 stereo zones, each with a different output signal
- Inputs and outputs via balanced XLR jacks
- Frequency range 20-20,000 Hz
- 19″ dimensions for rack installation, 2 U
The MZD-88 is designed for professional application. The connectors are
located on the rear panel, the operating elements are on the front panel. The
unit features four PA zones with eight identical channels each.

INSTALLATION
This device is built for 19″ racks (483 mm). This rack should be a double-door rack where you can open the front panel and the rear panel. The rack should be provided with a cooling fan. When mounting the device into the rack, please make sure that there is enough space around the device so that the heated air can be passed on. Steady overheating will damage your device. You can fix the device with four screws M6 in the rack. If several devices are to be installed, make sure that you leave 1 unit space between the devices.
CONNECTIONS
All connections have to be made or changed only if the mixer and all audio devices connected to it is/are switched off!
- Connect the outputs of the audio sources to the input jacks.
- A PA amplifier for speakers, mixers or a subsequent unit with line level can be connected to the XLR connectors OUTPUT.
Connection with the mains
Connect the device to the mains with the enclosed power supply cable.
The occupation of the connection cables is as follows:
Cable | Pin | International |
---|---|---|
Brown | Live | L |
Blue | Neutral | N |
Yellow/Green | Earth | **** |
**** The earth has to be connected!
If the device will be directly connected with the local power supply network, a disconnection switch with a minimum opening of 3 mm at every pole has to be included in the permanent electrical installation.
The device must only be connected with an electric installation carried out in compliance with the IEC standards. The electric installation must be equipped with a Residual Current Device (RCD) with a maximum fault current of 30 mA.
OPERATION
- Prior to switching on, set all LEVEL controls to mid-position to avoid damage to the hearing by a volume which is too high when switching on.
- Switch on the device via the power switch. The power indicator on the front panel lights up. Switch on the connected units; always switch on your PA amplifier last.
- Adjust the desired volume ratio with the Level controls.
- Determine the balance of the input signal between the left and right output.
- Switch off the unit with the POWER switch after operation.
The figure shows the signal of CH 1 routed to each pair of stereo outputs. To add signal from the CH 2 input to the STEREO A outputs, use the level controls in the same zone (STEREO A / OUT 1-2) in the second row CH 2.
Create stereo mixes with the LEVEL and PAN controls on the front panel of the MZD-88. Each row on the front panel (e.g. CH 1) corresponds to one input. Each zone on the front panel (e.g. STEREO A / OUT 1-2) corresponds to a pair of stereo outputs. Use the the LEVEL control to add signal to each pair of stereo outputs. Use the PAN control to balance the signal between the left and right output.
Application examples
The MZD-88 extends the capabilities of a standard mixing console by providing eight additional auxiliary sends, use it to create stereo or mono mixes for a variety of applications, e.g. for personal and loudspeaker monitoring, multitrack recording and monitoring, stereo effect sends, zone mixing and matrix mixing.
Monitoring
The MZD-88 gives you the possibility to create personal mixes for vocalists or
instrumentalists for live and studio applications without having to
reconfigure the existing setup of a mixing console.
Mixing consoles often do not provide enough dedicated outputs for monitoring
applications. Even if each performer has its own speaker cabinet, he does not
get his own mix. With the MZD-88 you can provide those individual mixes for
each band member, regardless how different each mix needs to be.
Multitrack monitoring
Use the MZD-88‘s input connectors to insert it between the eight outputs of a
multitrack recorder or a soundcard and the line inputs of another mixing
console.
You can mix the outputs to four individual stereo cue mixes without
interrupting the signal flow to the mixing console.
Multitrack recording
You can also insert the MZD-88 into the insert paths of a mixing console.
