With your new Speed Changer you can operate your David Bradley Garden Tractor at any speed desired with full engine power. Your Tractor will have increased pulling power for heavy loads. Low ground speeds for difficult maneuvering with full engine speed and power- excellent with Weed Cutters and Mowers. High transport speeds, start heavy loads at low speed and advance speed to desired rate after getting underway – 4 M.P.H. cart hauling. Re- duce speed at will when going gets too heavy and engine labors – maintain full engine power.
Reverse Attachment drives tractor to rear at .585 of forward speed. Reduced speed assists in controlling tractor. Drives to rear with full power on both wheels. Backs up heavy cart loads. Safety control that stops reverse drive as soon as operator releases pressure on handle. Stops tractor if operator should trip or fall. Automatic reversing pawls in wheels, ratchet for easy turning in both forward and reverse drives. Either wheel can be locked into forward or reverse drive, or reversed automatically. Finger-actuated lock on each wheel hub. Wheel width can be changed without effecting reverse mechanism function- full travel.
Although the Speed Changer and Reverse Attachment are simple to operate, care for it is very important. Instructions as outlined in this manual should be studied and followed very closely. Only by following these suggestions can good performance and longer service be obtained. We suggest that you keep this manual for future reference. Sears, Roebuck and Co, or Simpsons-Sears Limited reserves the right to make any changes in design and changes or improvements on its implements without imposing any obligations to install the same upon its implements heretofore manufactured.

SETTING UP INSTRUCTIONS

SPEED CHANGER

Clip all bundling wires and remove parts from carton. Lay parts out on a clean floor for readiness of assembly.

  1. Remove regular motor pulley and belt and discard.

  2. (Not illustrated). Adjust engine governor speed to 3600 R.P.M. when governor control is wide open with no load on engine. This R.P.M. will give 2-1/2 H.P. on “Super Power” engine and 2 H.P, on regular engine. NOTE: See Briggs and Stratton or conventional instruction books for method of adjusting governor speed.

  3. Loosen the 4 nuts on the engine base bolts and on later model tractors the nut on the hitch bar bolt and belt adjusting bolt, Also loosen straps on gas tank. Slide engine base towards transmission as far as possible. Retighten the 4 nuts on engine base.

  4. Assemble bearing clamp to pivot on slotted arm side with concave side of clamp towards arm. Assemble clamp -Bolt around right handle pipe between motor base and trang- mission and through clarap. Assemble nuts on U-Bolt — leave loose. (Figure C)

  5. Assemble bearing clamp over pivot and left frame pipe between engine base and transmission. Add 15/16 I.D. washers between single hole arm on pivot and bearing clamp for correct spacing of bearings with 1/16 maximum end play. Assemble U-Bolt around frame pipe through bearing clamp; leave nuts loose. (Figure D)

  6. Slide clamps forward until side of clamps are 1/8 from back of engine base. Tighten U-Bolt nuts on clamps, alternate tightening of nuts so that bearing will not bind on shaft during tightening. When U-Bolts are tight, pivot should turn freely in bearings with 1/16 maximum end play. (Figure C and D)

  7. Assemble spindle and sheave to outside of slotted pivot arm with two 7/16° x 1° cap acrews and 15/32″ I.D. washers. Head of cap screw and washer on inside of pivot arm. Leave cap screw sufficiently loose to slide spindle up. See Figure C and D.
NOTE : Gas Line must be reshaped to provide clearance for spindle sheave on some Garden Tractors.

  8. Assemble long changer belt over transmission pulley and inner changer sheave. Assem- ble changer motor pulley on engine shaft and keywith the small groove nearest the large groove towarda the engine, leave set screw loose. Place special short changer belt over outer sheave and inner small groove of motor pulley. See Figure C and D. Adjust motor pulley in and out on engine shaft until abeaves are in line. Push key so that key end is Rush with inner side of motor pulley, Tighten. set screw full tight.

  9. Pull spindle up in pivot slots until both belts are in tension. Tighten cap screws in spindle full tight, see Figure D. Loosen engine base bolts and adjust engine base forward until both belts are just tight enough to prevent lipping. Belts that are too tight will wear rapidly and shift bard. Tighten engine base bolts.
NOTE:   Retighten belts as needed by moving engine base until full travel is used, then move engine base to rear and re-adjust spindle. SHEAVES WILL FLOAT SIDEWAYS ON SPINDLE IN OPERATION FOR SELF-ALIGNMENT.

  10. Hook the undrilled end of the control rod through the hole in the handle pivot and push through until bent. portion is beyond hole. Hold control rod parallel to the top of the hadle pivot and turn the bent end so that it extende beyond flat portion of handle pivot and parallel to the atub shaft. Refer to Figure D.

  11. Assemble bandle over atub shaft so that control rod extends through handle slot and straight side of handle is forward. Assemble washer with 17/32 hole over stub shaft adjacent to handle, Figures C and D:

  12. Assemble flat slotted spriag over stub shaft with control rod through alot in spring and spring holes aligning with handle pivot holes. Assemble U-Bolt over left handle pipe and through pivot and spring, Figures C and D. Assemble hex nuts on U-Bolt.

  13. Put control rod (drilled end) through pivot arm hole from outside and cotter, see Figures C and D.

  14. Start engine. Rotate control bandle to forward most position (knob towards engine as far as possible). Pull handle pivot up on handle pipe until inner belt is riding at outside of changer sheave and control rod is in tension. Refer to Figures C and D. Rotate handle pivot until control rod rests against aide of clamp. Tighten U-Bolt nuts to retain pivot in position. Pall knob back, as shown in Figure D; outer belt should move out to flush with O.D. of outer changer sheave. Push knob forward, inner belt should come flush with O.D, of inner changer sheave.
NOTE : This adjustment must be checked whenever belt adjustment is changed or new belts are assembled.
    REVERSE ATTACHMENT

  15. Remove outer clutch plate from clutch on transmission and install reverse clutch sheave. refer to Figures C and D.
    SPRING TYPE CLUTCH

  16. Disengage clutch.

  17. Drive out groove pin (support shaft end while driving out pin).

  18. Remove clutch plate.

  19. Assemble adjusting aleeve over shaft-align same diameter hole in sleeve with shaft hole. Drive in new groove pin provided (support shaft end while driving in pin), until flush with flat on aleeve.

  20. Coat threads of clutch sheave with light film of grease and screw sheave on adjusting sleeve threads with clutch face side of sheave towards transmission pulley. NOTE: Check that clutch facing is still in place on transmission pulley.

  21. Turn clutch sheave until it locks transmission pulley between inner clutch plate and clutch sheave. Turn back clutch sheave exactly 1/2 turn, Choose the set screw hole nearest an unthreaded flat on the adjusting sleeve. Center set screw hole on flat. Insert set icrew and tighten very tight.

  22. Engage clutch then disengage clutch–transmission pulley should turp freely.
    BALL TYPE CLUTCH

  23. Disengage clutch.

  24. Turn pressure ring ao that hole in groove in at the top.

  25. Remove set screw from adjustable clutch plate.

  26. Remove adjustable clutch plate.SEARS-917-5751-David-Bradley-Garden-Tractors- \(3\) SEARS-917-5751-David-Bradley-Garden-Tractors- \(4\)
NOTE : Do not allow tranamiasion pulley to move out from transmission as balls will fall out of clutch and requize additional disassembly and replacement.

  27. Coat threads of clutch sheave with light film of grease and screw sheave on adjusting sleeve threads with clutch face side of sheave towards transmission pulley. NOTE: Check that clutch facing is in place on transmission pulley.

  28. Adjust ball clutch (See Garden Tractor Instruction Book).

  29. Remove lower hex head cap screw (3/8° x 1-1/2″) and lockwasher from left rear bandle clamp on transmission. Put lockwasher on (3/8″ 1-3/4) hex head cap screw provided and insert through rod side of bracket of left hand finger. Aasemble to handle clamp making sure finger bracket fits between flanges of handle clamp. Refer to Figure D. Tighten cap screw.

  30. Remove right rear handle clamp on transmission and discard clamp and bolts. Assemble idler and bracket to transmission in place of handle clamp using two 3/8″ x 1-1/2* hex head cap screws, (1) provided, (1) removed from left rear handle clamp, leave cap screws loose. 1/4″ cap screw in bracket should be screwed through bracket until ap- proximately 1/4° of tip extends through bracket, Figures C and D. Alternate tightening of 3/8″ cap screw to keep friction ring on idler parallel to transmission pulley. Adjust 1/4″ cap screw ao that ball bearing will just clear edge of transmission pulley when pulley is pulled out as far as possible and ball bearings is pushed in as far as possible. Final adjustment: Back edge of bracket resting against pipe. 3/8″ cap screws tight, 1/4″ cap screw must bear against transmission side. Friction ring centered on transmission pulley belt. Friction ring parallel to transmission pulley. Ball bearing will clear edge of transmission pulley when pulley is pulled out as far as possible and ball bearing is pushed in as far as possible.

  31. Assemble belt over clutch sheave and idler sheave. Hook small hook of belt tension spring in hole drilled in top end of idler arm. Hook large spring hook in spring hole in bracket, Figures C and D. This spring will hold reverse belt in tension and keep friction ring free of transmission pulley belt. Rotate roller arm forward and check that ball bearing roller is centered on the back of the reverse belt. If rotated forward under force the roller will depress the reverse belt forcing the friction ring into engagement with the back of the transmission pulley belt, effecting reverse drive. Readjust bracket bolts if necessary.
NOTE : Check that friction ring does not rub on handle brace rod in either engaged or disengaged position.

  32. Assemble control rod (drilled end) through hole in roller armwith arm finger above con- trol rod and cotter. See Figures C and D.

  33. Assemble 13/32″ I.D. washer, compression spring and control knob on control rod in the order listed. Tighten the control knob on rod end by hand. Assemble a clamp shim in the pocket of each control clamp and assemble two control clamps around R.H, handie and control rod between the washer and the idler assembly, Lasert 3/8 × 1-1/4″ hex head cap screw and nut in clamps as shown in Figures C and D. Slide clamps up handle. until roller arm is rotated to the rear and spring is compressed about 1/8. Align clamps and tighten bolt just sufficiently to prevent clamps from moving on handle.
Pushing on control knob should rotate roller until friction ring engages back of transmission pulley belt without fully closing compression spring. When knob is released, roller arm should return to rear most position and friction ring should disengage from belt; reverse belt in tension from spring .

  34. Remove wheels, wheel hubs and pawl holders from tractor. Remove hub clamps and pawl holders from wheel hubs. Discard pawl holders pawls and springs. Check reverse pawl units to see that reverse pawl and springs are in location with finger pins on out- side of pawls, as shown in Figure C. Insert pawl units in wheel hubs, rotate and depress pawls to assist in assembly. Assemble hub clamps do not tighten and assemble over clean axles with hub clamps outside.

  35. Reverse fingers must pass through hole in friction block freely, see Figures C and D. If necessary bead fingers slightly to align with frictionblock holes. Care must be main-‘ tained in inserting axle through friction wheel bore and pawl holder bore to prevent damage to friction wheel, Bores must be aligned in axle assembly. Insert axle keys flush with clamp end of pawl holder and maintain the keys flush when changing tread width. Tighten hub clamps.

  36. Remove drilled W.B.H. rivet from R.H. side of cowling, discard and replace with drilled W.B.H, rivet 5/16 2-1/2* and bushing 1/4″ long between cowling and bracket; recot ter. Refer to Figure C.

OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

REVERSE ATTACHMENT

Pawl Locks : Extending beyond inside of friction wheel on pawl unit, (Figuzes C and D.)

  • Automatic Reversing pawls-push pawl lock with finger as close to axle as it will go.
  • To lock wheel into forward or reverse drive (no automatic reversing) drive tractor in direction desired, stop tractor, do not move tractor and push pawl lock as far from axle as it will go. The wheel will then drive only in that direction and ratchet in the reverse direction.

NOTE: Locking one wheel in forward drive will assure manual turning in one direction without lock-up.

To Reverse : Forward clutch disengaged. Push control knob forward until, tractor drives to the rear. Light pressure only on knob is required, but if drive should slip under high loads increase pressure. To stop — release control knob.

CAUTION: Back up slowly and be sure of footings and grip on tractor handles. Tractor will stop moving if you should fall and release control knob.

NOTE: DO NOT PUSH REVERSE KNOB WHILE FORWARD CLUTCH IS ENGAGED. ENGINE WILL DIE AND BELTS MAY BE DAMAGED, WHEN TRACTOR IS PUSHED AND TURNED BY HAND, SHOULD WHEELS LOCK, ENGAGE REVERSE OR FORWARD LEVER TO UNLOCK.

Roller arm and idler arm must pivot freely on their shafts or springs will not be able to maintain belt tension and roller disengagement. If shafts rust tight due to lack of adequate oiling and prevent free turning even when re- oiled remove retaining rings (2) and disassemble, clean rust from shafts and holes with steel wool, reassemble.

Belt and friction ring must be free of oil and grease.

NOTE: When adjusting wheel tread width always check that end of finger rode clear back of wheel hub and hub bolt heads. that kick stand does not interfere with pawl lock and finger rods are through holes in friction blocks.
CAUTION: It has been found that on a few Garden Tractor transmissions the reverse idler can not be aligned to the center of the clutch pulley because a case rib interferes with proper adjustment of the reverse idler and bracket. If this difficulty is experienced, grind or file off a portion of the rib under the teverse bracket.

SPEED CHANGER
Never attempt to change speeds without engine running. Start out loads at low speed and advance speed while moving to avoid killing engine by starting load at high speeds.

LUBRICATION

SPEED CHANGER
Grease spindle fitting until grease shows both ends of changer sheave– WIPE off excess grease on sheave sides. Only occasional lubrication required. Oil moving parts of control handle and pivot with engine oil. Keep oil and grease off belts. Few drops of engine oil on changer sheave hub occasionally will help shifting.

REVERSE ATTACHMENT

Idler and roller bearings lubricated for life. Do not attempt to oil.
A few drops of oil occasionally in oil hole on roller arm hub and in oil hole in bracket over idler arm shaft will keep these pivots free turning and free of rust. (Refer to Figure D, Illustration Number 25).
Oil or grease control rod where it passes through control clamps and roller arm for easy operation.
Lubricate wheels with gun grease at hub grease fitting as usual except, friction blocks must not become greasy from over flow.

Bolts, Nuts, Washers and Cotter Pins of standard dimensions do not carry part numbers. When these standard items are needed in service they should be purchased at a Sears, Roebuck and Co. or Simpsons-Sears Limited store or from a local Hardware Store.
Each Part has been given an illustration number which is used only as a key to find the part number. Do not use the illustration number when ordering repair parts.
