IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
WARNING: When using power tools, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, including the following:
READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS.
There are certain applications for which this tool was designed. Porter-Cable strongly recommends that this tool NOT be modified and/or used for any application other than for which it was designed. If you have any questions relative to its application DO NOT use the tool until you have written Porter- Cable and we have advised you.   1. USE SAFETY GLASSES. To prevent eye injuries, the tool operator and all persons in the work area must wear safety glasses with permanently attached, rigid, plastic side shields. These safety glasses must conform to ANSI Z87.1 requirements (approved glasses have “Z87″ printed or stamped on them).
  2. WEAR EAR PROTECTION to safeguard against possible hearing loss.
  3. REMOVE FUEL CELL AND REGULATOR before doing tool maintenance, clearing a jammed fastener, leaving work area, moving tool to another location, or handing the tool to another person.
  4. NEVER USE A TOOL that is leaking fuel, has missing or damaged parts, or requires repair. Make sure all screws and caps are securely tightened.
  5. NEVER USE TOOL IF trigger or compression mechanism are inoperable, missing or damaged. Do not alter or remove trigger or other components. Make daily inspections for free movement of trigger and compression mechanism. Do not use tool if trigger can be pulled without tool being fully compressed.
  6. DO NOT USE TOOL WITHOUT SAFETY WARNING LABEL. If label is missing, damaged or unreadable, contact your Porter-Cable Service Center for a replacement.
  7. USE TOOL IN WELL VENTILATED AREA. Tool produces carbon monoxide.
  8. ONLY USE PARTS, FASTENERS, FUEL CELLS, AND ACCESSORIES recommended by Porter-Cable.
  9. ALWAYS ASSUME THE TOOL CONTAINS FASTENERS. Keep the tool pointed away from yourself and others at all times. No horseplay. Respect the tool as a working implement.
  10. DO NOT LOAD FASTENERS with tool in compressed position, to prevent unintentional firing of a fastener.
  11. REMOVE FINGER FROM TRIGGER when not driving fasteners. Never carry tool with finger on trigger: tool may fire a fastener if compressed.
  12. DON’T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times when using or handling the tool.
  13. FIRE FASTENERS INTO WORK SURFACE ONLY: never into materials too hard to penetrate. Never fire tool away from work surface.
  14. HOLD TOOL FIRMLY to minimize recoil.
  15. DO NOT DRIVE FASTENERS on top of other fasteners, or with the tool at too steep an angle: the fasteners can ricochet causing personal injury.
  16. DO NOT DRIVE FASTENERS CLOSE to the edge of the workpiece. The workpiece is likely to split allowing the fastener to fly free or ricochet causing personal injury.
  17. NEVER USE TOOL IN EXPLOSIVE ENVIRONMENT. Tool exhaust could cause fire or explosion.
  18. DO NOT SMOKE or allow near any flame while installing or removing fuel cell, or when operating or servicing tool.
  19. KEEP HANDS AND BODY PARTS away from area shown in Fig. 8A, to avoid 0injury.

ADDITIONAL SAFETY RULES FOR FUEL CELLS

  1. READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS before using or handling fuel cells. Failure to follow all instructions may result in explosion, fire, severe personal injury or property damage.
  2. USE ONLY IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA.
  3. OPERATOR AND ALL BYSTANDERS MUST WEAR approved safety glasses (complying with OSHA and ANSI Z87.1 requirements) when operating, loading fuel cell into tool, removing fuel cell or servicing tool.
  4. DO NOT SMOKE or allow near any flame while installing or removing fuel cell, or when operating or servicing tool.
  5. DO NOT STORE IN OR ALLOW PROLONGED EXPOSURE to sunlight or heat above 120°F (49°C) which may cause fuel cell to burst, releasing flammable | gas. i
  6. DO NOT INCINERATE, CRUSH, PUNCTURE, ATTEMPT TO OPEN, RECLAIM OR RECYCLE fue! cell. Fuel cell is nonrefillable.
  7. NEVER DISCHARGE CONTENTS TOWARD face, eyes or any bystander or when not instalied in tool.
  8. DO NOT INHALE CONTENTS.
  9. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
  10. NEVER CARRY OR STORE FUEL CELL IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE such as a car trunk, van or station wagon. A leak can result in a fire, explosion, asphyxiation @ or a toxic exposure.

Employer must enforce compliance with the safety warnings and all other instructions contained in this manual.  Keep this manual available for use by all people assigned to use this tool. For personal safety and proper operation of this tool, read and follow all of these instructions carefully.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

FOREWORD
Porter-Cable Model CDA250 is a professional, cordless finish nailer. It has a capacity of 100, 15 ga. finish nails of various lengths (from 1%” to 212″ long), see ACCESSORIES Listing in back of this manual. The tool may be used in any orientation.
Ambient operating temperature range for the tool is 20° F to 120° F. Ambient temperatures beyond this range can cause the tool to operate intermittently, or to not operate. Extreme cold temperatures will slow the return’ of the tool from the compressed position to the extended position. Extremely cold fuel cells will not have enough vapor pressure to operate the tool.
This tool is capable of firing two fasteners per second for short “pursts”, however you should not exceed two hundred (200) fasteners per fifteen minute period, or five hundred (500) fasteners per hour. Exceeding these rates may cause the tool to overheat resulting in severe damage to the tool.
BREAK-IN PROCEDURE
Your new Bammer is an internal combustion engine, and like a new truck engine it will perform better after a break-in period. At first the tool may be stiff during compression, and require a high push force, or extend very slowly in the inverted position. This is normal. No lubrication is required. As you use the Bammer for the first 200 or more fastenings, it will become easier to use, and extend quicker in the inverted position. Firing the first 200 fasteners in about 15 minutes will accelerate the break-in, and will not shorten the life of your Bammer.
CAUTION: Use approved Porter-Cable finish nails and fuel cells only (see ACCESSORIES Listing in back of this manual).
POWER SOURCE
This tool contains an internal combustion engine. It is designed to operate from approved Porter-Cable brand fuel cells ONLY. These cells contain liquefied hydrocarbon fuel. Each fuel cell should provide approximately 3000
fastenings.
PREPARING THE TOOL

  1. After reading and understanding this entire manual, install fuel cell into handle of tool as follows:
    CAUTION: Keep tool pointed away from yourself and others at all times.
    Do not load fasteners with tool compressed.
    Only use approved Porter-Cable fasteners and fuel cells (see ACCESSORIES). Always wear Z87 approved safety glasses, and hearing protection when preparing or operating the tool. Never use a tool that leaks fuel or needs repair. (A slight odor when the fuel cell is installed is normal. If the odor is excessive and persistent, or an audible leak is noticed, tool should be repaired).PORTER CABLE CDA250 Bammer Cordless Finish Nailer - driv
8. Depress regulator latch (red button near bottom of tool handle) and pull regulator from tool (see Fig. 15) (Latch will be easier to depress if you push in on the regulator).
    Clean any foreign material from regulator and from inside of tool handle.
    Remove the plastic cap from a clean, approved Porter-Cable fuel cell. Slide fuel cell into handle of tool (see Fig. 16).
    NOTE: one end of fuel cell is equipped with a dispensing valve (A) Fig. 16. The dispensing valve MUST face the regulator. Align regulator with tool handle and snap into place (see Fig. 17).
    NOTE: Compress tool twice (to charge system with fuel), before firing the first fastener after installing a fuel cell.

  2. Orient a strip of nails with points down (see Fig. 18), and align with the magazine “T” slot. NOTE: The nails MUST hang from their heads in the “T” slot.

  3. Feed the strip of nails into the magazine (“T” slot), until they are past the stop (A) Fig. 19.

  4. Pull the follower (B) Fig. 20, all the way to the rear of the magazine and release. The follower will apply pressure to the strip of nails to feed it into the driving mechanism.

USING THE TOOL
Complete all steps of PREPARING THE TOOL before using the tool.
To Fire a Fastener:
Position nose of tool onto work surface, push forward to fully compress the tool and hold, then squeeze the trigger to fire a fastener. After the fastener is fired, release tool and allow it to retum to the fully extended position.
NOTE: Tool must fully extend or no fastener will be driven the next time the tool is fired. After installing a fuel cell, compress tool twice (to charge system with fuel), before firing first fastener.
CAUTION: Remove finger from trigger when not driving fasteners. Never carry tool with finger on trigger, tool will fire if compressed Keep tool pointed in a safe direction at all times. Never attempt to drive a fastener into material that is too hard, or at too steep an angle, or near the edge of the workpiece. The fastener can ricochet causing personal injury.
Remove regulator and purge tool (see following section: To Purge Tool) before performing maintenance, clearing a jammed fastener, feaving work area, moving tool to another location, or handing the tool to another person.
Clean and inspect tool daily. Carefully check for proper operation of trigger and safety mechanism. Do Not use the tool unless both the trigger and the safety mechanism are functional, or if the tool is leaking fuel or needs any other repair.
Each time the tool is compressed, a charge of fuel is injected into the cylinder.
When the trigger is depressed it causes a spark inside the cylinder which ignites the charge (of fuel and air). Pressure from the igniting fuel drives the fastener. After firing, the tool must be released and allowed to return to the fully extended position before beginning a new firing cycle. If the tool is compressed and released without being fired: if the tool does not fire when compressed, it may be necessary to “purge” the tool before continuing.

To Purge Tool:

  1. Depress regulator latch (red button near bottom of tool handle) and pull regulator from tool. (Latch will be easier to depress if you push in on the regulator). Remove fuel cell.
  2. Compress tool fully and release, allowing tool to return to the fully extended position. Repeat this cycle two more times to purge all fuel from the system.
  3. Clean any foreign material from regulator and from inside of tool handle.

  5. Compress tool twice (to charge system with fuel), before firing the first fastener.

To Adjust Depth-of-Drive:
The depth to which a fastener is driven is controlled by the position of the depth stop (A) Fig. 22. The depth of drive is factory adjusted to the maximum setting.
Test fire a fastener and check depth. If a change is desired, use the %:z” hex wrench (from storage pocket in rear end of magazine), to loosen locking screw (B) Fig. 22. Slide the depth stop out to the desired position and secure by re- tightening the locking screw. Test fire another fastener and check depth. Repeat as necessary to achieve desired results. NOTE: TOOL MUST BE HELD FIRMLY AGAINST THE WORK OR DRIVE DEPTH WILL VARY.
To Clear a Jammed Fastener:

  1. CAUTION: Remove regulator and purge tool.

  2. Remove any remaining fasteners from the tool.
    A. Place finger through hole (A) Fig. 23, and push lever to release follower mechanism. B. Slide the follower to the front end of the magazine.
    C. Depress the stop (B) Fig. 24, and slide all remaining fasteners out of the magazine.

  4. Remove the jammed fastener (see Fig. 26).

  5. Close the fastener guide plate and secure with the quick release latch.

  6. Replace regulator and reload magazine with fasteners.

MAINTENANCE

Your Porter-Cable Cordless Nailer is the world’s first oil free, internal combustion engine, nailer.
Do not use liquid lubricants on this tool.
CLEAN AND INSPECT DAILY
CAUTION: Remove fuel cell and purge tool before cleaning and inspection. Correct all problems before placing the tool back inuse.
EXTERIOR
Wipe tool clean and inspect for wear or damage. If necessary, use a solution of warm water and dish washing detergent to wipe exterior of tool only. DO
NOT SOAK tool with cleaning solution.
Do not use solvents on tool, this can damage internal parts.
Do not use oil or grease on this tool except as specified in this manual.
Inspect trigger and compression mechanism to assure system is complete and functional: no loose or missing parts, no binding or sticking parts.
Keep all screws tight. Loose screws can cause personal injury or damage tool.
FASTENER GUIDE AREA
Open the quick release latch and hinge the fastener guide plate open (see Fig. 25). Clean this area thoroughly. Residue from the fastener collation material collects in this area and must be cleaned regularly. A light coat of a “dry” lubricant (like Porter-Cable #1255066) may be applied to the driver guide track. USE “DRY” LUBRICANT ONLY!
AIR FILTER
This tool is equipped with a foam air filter. This filter will require changing periodically.
Frequency will depend on the amount of airborne contaminants in the operating area. The filter should be changed at least as often as the igniter. Each replacement igniter kit includes a new air filtler (and a tube of silicone lubricant). The filter is also available separately. A clogged filter will cause the tool to misfire. Change the filter as follows:

  1. CAUTION: Remove regulator and purge tool.
  2. Remove four top cover screws (A) Fig. 27, and lift off cover.
  3. Brush any foreign material from exposed area.
  4. Pull wire and boot assembly off spark plug (see Fig. 28).
  5. Lift old filter out, clean any foreign material from filter area.
  6. Insure new filter is lightly oiled with automotive oil SAE 5 or 10, or equivalent (do not use multi viscosity oil). It is highly recommended that air filters always be replaced when they require servicing. However, if a new air filter is not available, the filter can be washed in a solution of warm soapy water, thoroughly dried, oiled per the above, excess oil blotted with paper towel, and reused.PORTER CABLE CDA250 Bammer Cordless Finish Nailer - Button 8
  7. Insert new fiter, fill spark plug cavity with electrical grade silicone lubricant (ike Porter-Cable #883807), and firmly seat wire and boot back onto spark plug.
  8. Replace top cover and secure with the four screws removed in step 2.

SERVICE AND REPAIRS

All quality tools eventually require servicing or replacement of parts due to wear from normal use. Some user serviceable components are described in the TROUBLESHOOTING Section. Complete product Service is available from either an AUTHORIZED PORTER-CABLE SERVICE STATION or a PORTER-CABLE SERVICE CENTER. All repairs made by these agencies are fully guaranteed against defective material and workmanship. We cannot guarantee repairs made or attempted by anyone other than these agencies. Should you have any questions about your tool, feel free to write us at any time. In any communications, please give all information shown on the nameplate of your tool (model number, type, serial number, etc.).

TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

CAUTION: Disconnect regulator from tool before cleaning and inspection.

Problem Possible Reasons and Solutions.

TOOL DOES NOT RETURN TO EXTENDED POSITION
WHEN HELD UPSIDE DOWN| * New tool has not been broken-in. Use tool in normal, right-side-up position to fire the first fifty to one hundred fasteners. The tool should then operate upside down.

  • Tool s too cold. Fire a few fasteners in the right-side- up position 1o warm mechanism.
    TOOL FIRES BUT NO FASTENERS COME OUT| * There are no fasteners loaded in the magazine. Insert fasteners into magazine.
    « Fasteners are improperly installed. Remove fasteners and replace correctly. See “Operating Instructions” for details.
  • Incorrect fasteners are being used. Verity approved fasteners of correct size as described in
    “Accessories section.
  • Fastener is jammed under the nose cover. Open the nose cover by releasing the quick-release latch and remove any jammed fasteners. Replace cover. (See “Frequent Jamming” problem below)
  • Tool has been held to contact surface too long and gas has dissipated from chamber not ailowing for sufficient firing force. Repeat firing cycle.
    TRIGGER DOES NOT PULL BACK| * Spring is kinked. Make sure fasteners are being pushed forward throughout the entire range. If the spring needs to be replaced, please contact a Porter- Cable authorized service center.
    = Tool is not sufficiently depressed against contact surface. Tool must be fully compressed in order to fire.
    TRIGGER PULLS, BUT TOOL DOES NOT FIRE| « Purge tool by first removing the regulator and tre fues cell, then cycling through two compressions. Reinsi. fuel cell and regulator, compress tool and release. {without firing), then compress tool a second time and fire.
  • Tool must fully extend after each firing. Lift tool completely off work between firings.
    « Fuel cell is emply. Replace with a full one. Properly dispose of the spent cell. Note: Fuel cell will make a
    “sloshing” sound when lightly shaken if fuel remains.
  • Regulator is not assembled properly to tool. Make sure regulator is snapped into place.
  • The tool does not contain fasteners. Install fasteners.
    « Temperature is below operating temperature. Warm fuel cell to operating temperature without exposing to temperatures greater than 120° F.
  • Igniter needs 1o be replaced.
    TOOL FAINTLY SMELLS OF GAS, “ROTTEN EGGS”| « Itis normal for small amounts of gas to vent from the tool during installation or removal of the fuel cell.
    This is not a problem.
  • See “Excessive Gas Venting” for other suggestions.
    TOOL WILL NOT COMPRESS TOOL WILL NOT EXTEND w/out HELP FROM OPERATOR FASTENER DOES NOT COUNTER-SINK| * Tool requires service.
  • Nose cover track is dirty. Clean and lubricate with a “dry” lubricant, such as Porter-Cable #1255066.
  • Set depth stop for maximum fastener penetration.
    « Firmly hold tool against work.
  • Driver tip may be worn or broken. Take 100l to Porter- Cable qualified service center for repairs.
    FREQUENT JAMMING| * Incorrect fasteners are being used. Verify approved fasteners of correct size.
  • Fasteners are damaged. Replace with undamaged fasteners.
  • Magazine or nose screws are loose. Tighten the screws.
    « Magazine is dirty. Clean magazine.
  • Driver blade is damaged. Replace driver blade.
    EXCESSIVE GAS VENTING
    (Includes hissing sound, regulator is very cool, intense smell of “rotten eggs”)| * Remove regulator and check for contamination or cut o-rings. Clean debris with dry rag or replace the damaged o-rings.
  • If smell persists, the tool may have a leak and should not be used. Contact a Porter-Cable authorized service center for repairs.
    REGULATOR IS DIFFICULT  TO REMOVE| Push regulator into the tool 1o refieve pressure on the latch. Then fully compress the release latch.
  • Remove regulator and check for contamination or cut o-rings. Clean debris with dry rag or replace the damaged o-rings
    TOOL NEEDS FREQUENT PURGING| * Replace air filter. Insure new filter s lightly oiled with automotive oil SAE 5 or 10, or equivalent (do not use mult viscosity oil). f a replacement filter is not readily available: wash the filterin a solution of warm soapy water, dry thoroughly, lightly oil with autorotive oil SAE 5 or 10 (do not use muli viscosity oil), blot excessive ol with paper towel, and reinstall in the tool.
    OTHER|  Replace igniter.
