General remarks:
Optical instruments do not need to be cleaned too frequently. A few dust particles will not reduce the performance of a telescope, spotting scope, or binoculars.

We recommend that you clean lenses and mirrors only in the following circumstances:

  • If dust is clearly visible.
  • If there is oil on the surface – this can happen if eyelashes come into contact with an eyepiece’s outer lens.
  • If an instrument has not been used for a long time and mould has formed on the surface.
  • Pollen contamination. Pollen contains sugar and is degraded by bacteria, which settle on the optics. These organisms produce acidic substances, which could attack the optical system. If a yellowy deposit is detected on the optics after a springtime observing session, the optical system should be cleaned.
  • Extensive contamination. The optics must be cleaned if beverages or other liquids have accidentally come into contact with the optical system. Even if these liquids are clear, elements within them or their degradation byproducts may compromise the coating of optical components.

When using cleaning products, please always follow the following guidelines:

  • First try to clean without contact, e.g. with an air blower.
  • Never rub! This can cause microscopic particles to scratch the surface and damage the coatings.
  • Before using liquids, always ensure that they cannot enter the lens housing – otherwise this can create mould and cause further damage.
  • Patience is key! Stubborn dirt can often be dealt with by repeated application of cleaning fluid. This might take some time.

Tool Name Use case
Air blower with silicone nozzle Blow away small grains of dust with this

air blower. The nozzle is made from silicone, but nevertheless it is better to avoid touching surfaces with it when in use
| Extendible cleaning brush (Lens Pen)| Remove dust that cannot be blown away by gently stroking this brush across the surface. Be careful not to apply pressure!
| 50ml spray cleaning fluid| Ensure that your instrument is waterproof before using this fluid on stubborn dirt or grease – no liquid should ever enter lens assemblies! Allow the fluid to dry without touching the surface, or dry it with a cleaning tissue (see next item).
| 50 sheets of cleaning tissues| These tissues can be used to wipe off cleaning fluid. Only dab the surface when using, do not rub – rubbing always carries the danger that small particles will scratch the surface. These scratches may worsen the performance of your instrument more than small specks of dust.
Damp cleaning wipes| Damp cleaning wipes| Use the wet wipe for removing dirt if you are unsure about waterproofness, the dry wipe can be used like a cleaning tissue
fine cleaning buds| 5x fine cleaning buds, 5x broad cleaning buds| Useful for loosening stubborn dirt. Spray cleaning fluid onto the tips to spot-clean. The buds are particularly useful for reaching the edge of a lens or mirror.
microfibre cloth| 30x30cm microfiber cloth| This cloth should only be used for cleaning the housing of your scope or binoculars.
