Affected products: Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor, Dropcam Pro, Dropcam
- Start here if you have a new Nest Cam, or if you’re setting up an existing camera in a different account or home.
- Once your camera’s up and running, we’ll give you some options for mounting your camera in different ways.
- If you have a Nest Cam Outdoor, check out our Nest Cam Outdoor installation video.
Before getting started
- Make sure your phone or tablet is compatible with the Nest app. If not, set up your camera with a Mac or Windows PC instead.
- Install the latest version of the Nest app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
How to set up your camera
Open the Nest app and sign in
If you don’t have an account, tap Sign up to create one.
Add your camera
Note: If you have more than one home in your Nest Account, select the home where you want to install your camera.
Select the Settings icon
Tap Add product, then choose Nest Cam.
Scan the QR code
The QR code is on the back (Indoor) or underside (Outdoor) of your Nest Cam.
Nest Cam: You’ll also need to enter the 6-digit
Entry key
Next to the QR code.
Dropcam Pro: Plug in your camera, then you’ll be asked to enter the serial number from the back, beginning with 308cfb.
Troubleshooting QR code scanning >
Note: If the QR code isn’t working, plug in your camera, then tap Continue without scanning to instead enter the 12-digit serial number from the back of the camera.
In the Nest app, tap Next to continue.
Pick a “where” label
Choose a pre-set location or select Custom. The Nest app uses the “where” label to tell you where alerts are happening and organize your devices in the app.

After your camera is plugged in, its LED will turn blue. In the Nest app, tap Next to continue.
Connect to Wi-Fi
Wait a moment as your camera scans for Wi-Fi networks. When the list of networks appears, choose the one you’d like your camera to use. You may also be asked to enter the Wi-Fi password.

Check your camera’s video stream

If you have a Nest Cam Indoor, the app will also ask whether you want to get notifications about activity. If you have a Nest Cam Outdoor, this option comes later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy Nest Aware in order to record video, or can I pair with Amazon Cloud and integrate video storage that way?****
Nest Cam recording is now supported by Blue Iris, but you must make the camera visible to the public. However, you can find much less expensive IP cameras that will enable you to accomplish the same task more quickly and safely before going there.
Where there isn’t wifi, will the video record? Do you store recordings on the device and upload them to the cloud later?****
No, the device uploads directly to Nest Cloud over your wifi. Any recorded video is immediately available to you.
Can I use it to watch my baby? Will my phone automatically start playing the audio if my kid starts wailing while I’m asleep or will I only get an alert?****
The easiest way to use it as a baby monitor is in conjunction with a tablet or Google Home hub so you have a screen to look at instead of having to open the app on your phone. We monitor our man with a nest cam using both an iPad and a hub, however the hub has the advantage of also functioning as a digital picture frame! If you don’t already own a tablet, the hub is also significantly less expensive; before we had a tablet, we simply used our hub.
Would this work for monitoring my elderly mother? (she has dementia and some history of falls)****
Yes, you will be able to communicate in two ways using audio. So even if she can’t access a phone after falling, you can still communicate with her.
Does it detect movement through windows? I want to direct them toward my back window.****
One is put up in this way in my possession, and it picks up motion. However, looking out the window will not let you use the night vision. All you will see is the night vision leds’ reflection. If you require the night vision function, it is preferable to use the outdoor camera. I just leave the night vision off and have a 100 watt light outside my back door. This also functions.
When you get home, how do you turn it off?****
You can turn it off via your computer, tablet, or phone, or you can simply unplug it.
Can many phones view the video simultaneously?****
Yes. I’ve connected my phone and my wife’s phone. You can also provide someone limited access so they can view the camera but not make any changes.
Can you watch both the audio and video feeds from two Nest Cams simultaneously or alternately?****
On your home screen, select a different cam to switch between.
Can you use this as a camera for a video conference? Use HDMI to connect a camera to a TV and a laptop so the TV may function as a huge webcam? Possible?****
Ip base is nest cam. This isn’t hdmi. You need a wireless router because it is a WiFi camera. And require internet to operate. However, you can connect a laptop to a TV using HDMI.
Is internet and my iPhone sufficient for using this, or do I need a PC at home?****
All you need is an iPhone and WiFi. By scanning the code on the camera’s back and creating an account, setup for that method is quite simple and doesn’t require any recording.
What is a better drop cam-like alternative now that Nest has made a nice mistake?****
Two DropCam Pro cameras are mine. 1 at my office and 1 at home. I’ve never experienced any issues with either camera. They operate flawlessly, and I have no issues. I’ve had the camera in my house for six months, and I just set up the camera in my office last week. It has already assisted me in catching a worker who was stealing from the business by falsifying their timekeeping. The “Nest” cameras have made me very happy.
