Q9: Hard Disk Capacity Description
The hard disk capacity labelled on the computer differs from that displayed by the operating system. For example, the labelled 40GB hard disk is smaller than 40GB, which is normal in the field of computers, so don’t worry if your computer’s hard drive is installed incorrectly or if something goes wrong. Here’s why:

  • Different calculation standards are used by the hard disk manufacturers and the operating system. Hard disk manufacturers use the 1000 system when labelling the hard disk capacity, that is, 1G=1, 000MB, 1MB=1, 000=KB, 1KB=1, 000byte; However, the operating system uses the 1024 system, that is, 1G=1, 024MB, 1MB=1, 024=KB, 1KB=1, 024 byte to calculate the hard disk capacity. The hard disk capacity labelled on your computer adopts the hard disk manufacturers’ calculation standard of 1000 system, so it is smaller than that displayed by the operating system which adopts the calculation standard of 1024 system. Therefore, if the labelled hard disk capacity is XG and the computer is completely unused, the hard disk capacity displayed by the operating system is only: X × 1000 x 1000 × 1000 / (1024 × 1024 × 1024) = X × 0.931 G. If part of the hard disk has been occupied for specific purposes, the hard disk capacity displayed by the operating system will be smaller than X × 0.931 G.

b.Part of the hard disk has been occupied for a specific purpose.
Equipped with a one-key recovery function, the hard disk before delivery has been divided into a specific partition to store the hard disk image files and one-key recovery program files, the specific value of this part of the hard disk varies according to the computer type and the installed operating system and software. For the sake of security, this partition can only be seen in the “Disk Management”, which is commonly referred to as a “Hidden Partition” or “Service Partition”. In addition, after the hard disk is partitioned or formatted, the system occupies some space on the hard disk to store the system files. Based on the above reasons, the hard disk capacity displayed by the operating system is smaller than that labelled on your computer.Maxtang-
