What is Arduino®

Arduino® is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino® boards are able to read inputs – light-on sensor, a finger on a button or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating of a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so, you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring) and the Arduino® software IDE (based on Processing). The NEO-7 series of standalone GNSS modules is built on the exceptional performance of the u-blox 7 GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, QZSS and SBAS) engine. The NEO-7 series delivers high sensitivity and minimal acquisition times in the industry-proven NEO form factor.

The Whadda WPI430 GPS module uses the u-blox NEO-M chipset at its core in order to provide accurate location data with low acquisition times. It features a built-in USB connector to directly interface with PCs, a built-in ceramic patch antenna (suitable for outdoor uses), and an external SMA antenna connector. It is advised to remove the C2 capacitor when connecting an external GPS antenna in order to avoid interference.

Using the Module Directly with a PC

  • You can directly connect the GPS module to your PC by using a microUSB cable.
  • To check the raw incoming data, you can use the Arduino® IDE’s serial monitor. Make sure that the port settings are set to the correct serial port, and the baud rate is set to 9600 baud.
  • The messages starting with a dollar sign ‘$’ are NMEA messages that can be read by a variety of software such as google earth.
  • You can quickly check the data by copying the NMEA messages into an online NMEA decoder, e.g. http://freenmea.net/decoder.
