Product Usage Instructions
- Maintaining Water Heater Efficiency and Protecting Against Hard Water Minerals
- To maintain the efficiency of your Stiebel Eltron Tankless Electric Water Heater and protect it against damage caused by minerals found in hard water, follow these steps:
- Properly Treat Incoming Water
- Recommended installation of a tankless water heater with a Scale TACler Plus water conditioner [Part No. 692500]. This water conditioner helps prevent mineral buildup and extends the life of your water heater.
- Periodic Flushing
- Periodically flushing your water heater is essential to remove any accumulated minerals. Follow the descaling procedure below:
- Descaling Procedure using Flow-aide Descaling Kit
- Turn off the power to the water heater.
- Close the cold isolation valve.
- Open the hot isolation valve.
- Connect a hose to the hot service valve.
- Place the other end of the hose in a drain or bucket.
- Open the hot service valve.
- Open a nearby hot water faucet to relieve pressure.
- Remove the service cap from the hot service valve.
- Pour Flow-aide descaling solution into the hose connected to the hot service valve.
- Allow the solution to flow through the water heater for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Close the hot service valve.
- Remove the hose from the service valve and replace the service cap.
- Open the hot isolation valve.
- Connect power to the water heater and return it to service.
- Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q: How often should I flush my Stiebel Eltron Tankless Electric Water Heater?
- A: It is recommended to flush your water heater every 6-12 months, depending on your water quality and usage.
- Q: Can I use a different descaling solution instead of Flow-aide?
- A: It is recommended to use a Flow-aide descaling solution as it is specifically designed for this water heater. The use of other descaling solutions may damage the unit and void the warranty.
- Q: Where can I purchase the Scale TACler Plus water conditioner?
- A: The Scale TACler Plus water conditioner [Part No. 692500] can be purchased directly from Stiebel Eltron or authorized retailers. Please refer to the contact information provided above.
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
Tankless Electric Water Heaters and Water Quality
- This bulletin guides the user how to maintain and protect a Stiebel Eltron tankless electric water heater against damage caused by minerals found in hard water.
- Stiebel Eltron tankless electric water heaters are designed for a very long service life, but actual life expectancy will be directly affected by water quality and use.
- If you do not already know the quality of your water, we advise testing (your water department may be able to assist). Installing a non-salt-based water conditioner may prolong the life of your unit.
- Stiebel Eltron recommends the Scale TACler Plus water filter (our Part No. 692500) for this purpose.
- To ensure consistent water flow, we recommend periodically checking for and removing any scale and dirt in the faucet aerators and showerheads, and in the filter screen in the unit.
- Depending on water hardness, scale build-up may need to be flushed from the unit every six months to a year.
- Stiebel Eltron recommends locating suitable valving and/or the use of braided stainless steel flex connections on both inlet and outlet pipes for the last 1-2 feet of bridge between your household water piping and the tankless water heater.
- This will allow you to quickly disconnect and isolate the unit (see diagram, right). You can then periodically pump a descaling solution from a bucket in front into the inlet and back out the outlet to the bucket, much the same as you would descale a cof- fee maker.
- This twofold approach of treating the incoming water properly and periodic flushing should help to maintain the efficiency of the heating elements and extend the life of your Stiebel Eltron tankless electric water heater.
- Additionally, if you operate the tankless water heater at an output temperature of 110° Fahrenheit or below, this will help to minimize scaling.
Descaling procedure, step-by-step using Flow-aide descaling kit:
- Disconnect power to water heater.
- Close hot and cold isolation and service valves and remove service caps.
- Pour 1.5 gallons of water into a bucket and place it under the water heater.
- Add contents of a 1-quart bottle of Flow-aide into a bucket (the bucket should be filled approximately ½ full).
- Connect one hose pump, and the other end of the same hose to the cold service valve. Place pump in bucket.
- Connect the second hose to the hot service valve. Place the other end in the bucket.
- Open both hot and cold service valves.
- Plug the pump into a grounded receptacle.
- Allow pump to circulate Flow-aide solution through heater for 30-45 minutes. Unplug pump.
- Close the cold service valve. Remove the hose from the cold service valve, and replace the service cap.
- Disconnect the hose from the pump and remove the pump from the bucket. Discard Flow-aide solution.
- Flush the tankless water heater for 3-5 minutes or until water flows clear by opening the cold isolation valve and allowing water to exit through the hot service valve into a drain or bucket. If using a bucket, empty it periodically.
- Close the hot service valve. Remove the hose from the service valve and replace the service cap.
- Open the hot isolation valve.
- Connect power to the water heater and return the appliance to service.
- We recommend our Flow-aide Descaling Kit [Part No. 540000 ] for this purpose.
- Alternatively, white vinegar or CLR® Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover may be used.
