Intro: This guide is to explain what each picture setting configures on 2023
`L’ Series Sony TVs. Each viewing environment is unique with no distinct
picture settings performing best for any given scenario. Preset values in
example images are not recommendations.
Picture Mode
Adjusts overall picture settings between Vivid, Standard, Cinema, Game, Photo,
IMAX Enhanced, and Custom.
Vivid Meant for bright rooms where ambient light can overwhelm TV brightness
negatively impacting overall picture quality.
Standard Best suited for everyday TV use where brightness and color give a
natural picture while maintaining brightness levels able to keep up with well-
lit environments.
Cinema Used for viewing movie content. Color volume is meant to deliver the
directors intent, while maintaining 24p motion performance.
Game This picture mode shuts off most picture processing focused on movie and
TV content to better improve input lag and gaming performance.
Graphics Best used for displaying text, graphics, or PC inputs. This allows
the TV to focus on PC color formats and Resolutions to improve handshaking.
Photo Formatted picture mode dedicated to showing natural colors and flesh
tones for picture viewing in a home environment while handshaking with picture
formats seamlessly.
IMAX Enhanced Used for viewing IMAX Enhanced content maintaining picture
settings tailored around the director’s intent.
Custom The reference picture mode. Most processing will be set to low’ or
off’ values. Best used for professional calibrations.
Auto Picture Mode The TV will set the picture mode based off content being
played. This setting is best set to `off’ if wanting to maintain custom
settings the user may adjust.
Ambient Light Sensor TV light sensors have advanced over the years, and one of
the benefits of Sony ambient light sensors is the ability to adjust
brightness, color tone, and white balance based off the environment’s lighting
scenario. The TV will adjust these settings based off lighting which can be
impacted by time of day, or different room lighting scenes.
Bravia Cam Auto-Adjust Settings Bravia Cam is an accessory that can be added
to select Sony TVs where the TV will adjust sound and picture performance
based off seating positions in the room detected by Bravia Cam.
Brightness Controls overall LED brightness output. This setting impacts
overall picture quality and is best used for temporary brightness adjustments,
or setting brightness values for specific picture modes.
Contrast This setting will shift contrast to adjust the brightest and darkest
areas in a single frame to best fit the users desired picture quality.
Gamma Adjusts mid-range contrast levels helping with color or Brightness
clipping that may be experienced during select content being played.
HDR Tone Mapping Adjust color gradation smoothing specifically with HDR
content. Increasing or decreasing the values can improve HDR Performance
depending on content being viewed.
Black Level Quickly adjust black level based off the viewing environment’s
lighting scenario. Black level performance will vary based on ambient lighting
in the room.
Black Adjust Allows XR Processor to analyze content brightness levels and make
adjustments in real time to help improve picture performance, specifically in
high contrast scenes.
Advanced Contrast Enhancer Allows the XR Processor to adjust contrast based
off Brightness output.
Auto Local Dimming Adjusts the local dimming algorithm focused on controlling
zones of LEDs, allowing for tighter LED control.
Peak Luminance Adjust levels of the brightest whites giving more control over
high contrast scenes.
Color Change color tone and saturation level. Adjusting this can help with
under or over saturation depending on content being played.
Hue Shifts color tone red or green, ideally used for viewing older analog
content which may shift to red or green depending on filming equipment used.
Color Temperature Quickly adjust white balance to best fit certain content
types, or to help with ambient lighting that may be overly cool or warm.
Live Color Quickly adjusts overall vividness of colors. Change output of color
saturation easily on a scale of low, medium, or high to match the viewers
desired color performance.
Sharpness Adjusts overall sharpness by using XR Processor to analyze and
enhance content to improve clarity without adding substantial image noise.
Reality Creation A processing algorithm dedicating to upscaling content. By
smoothing out both resolution and image noise, Reality Creation can greatly
impact picture quality restoring quality lost due to compression.
Random Noise Reduction Removes image noise that is a result of compression.
This can be especially noticeable in darker scenes, bright landscapes, and
older vintage content.
Digital Noise Reduction Removes image noise noticeable around text, news
tickers, and repeated textures due to compression.
Smooth Gradation Smooths out gradations of colors which can normally cause
banding, specifically in areas or surfaces with multiple shades of color. This
effect causes streaks, or a rainbow like effect of multiple shades of color.
Motionflow This setting will adjust all motion performance on Sony TVs. Each
picture mode will have it’s own preset Motionflow settings. To adjust
smoothness, increase the smoothness slider which gives a “live TV” look, and
increase Clearness for more Natural motion performance. Auto determines what
is best for content being played, Custom allows for the user to change values,
and Off is playing native frame rates.
CineMotion Geared in improving movie content for home viewing, this setting
helps native 24p content play more smoothly without taking away from the
director’s intent.
Video Signal These settings are set in auto to help with an open handshake
between different HDR formats. HDR Mode will push the TV into HDR10 or HLG
color space regardless if source content is HDR10. HDMI Video Range toggles
HDMI signal range. Color Space allows for color formats to be displayed
regardless of source content color format. Leaving Auto toggled allows the TV
to automatically toggle into the proper settings for optimal picture
performance.

Protecting the TV Screen (For OLED TV only)
Precautions to Protect the Screen from Damage
Image retention OLED TV’s are susceptible to image retention (burn-in) due to the characteristics of the materials used. Image retention may occur if images are displayed in the same location on the screen repeatedly or over extended periods of time. This is not a malfunction of the TV. Avoid displaying images that may cause image retention.
The following are examples of images that may cause image retention:
Content with black bars either on the top and bottom and/or the left and right
sides of the screen. (for example, Letterboxed, 4:3 screen, Standard
definition)
Static images such as photos. On-screen menus, program guides,
channel logos etc. Static content from applications. On-screen tickers, such
as those used for
news and headlines.
To reduce the risk of image
retention:
Sony recommends that you turn off the
TV normally by pressing the power
button on the remote control or the TV.
Fill the screen by changing [Wide mode]
to eliminate the black bars.
Turn off the OSD (On Screen Display)
by pressing
