GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY

WARNING
Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations, and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fi re, and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

  1. Work area safety

    • Keep the work area clean and well-lit.
Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.

    • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust.
Power tools create sparks that may ignite the dust or fumes.

    • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool.
Distractions can cause you to lose control.

  2. Electrical safety

    • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodifi ed plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.

Regarding electric discharge in case of new batteries, etc
As the internal chemical substance of new batteries and batteries that have not been used for an extended period is not activated, the electric discharge might be low when using them the first and second time. This is a temporary phenomenon, and the normal time required for recharging will be restored by recharging the batteries 2–3 times.

How to make the batteries perform longer

  1. Recharge the batteries before they become completely exhausted
When you feel that the power of the tool becomes weaker, stop using the tool and recharge its battery. If you continue to use the tool and exhaust the electric current, the battery may be damaged and its life will become shorter.

  2. Avoid recharging at high temperatures
A rechargeable battery will be hot immediately after use. If such a battery is recharged immediately after use, its internal chemical substance will deteriorate, and the battery life will be shortened. Leave the battery and recharge it after it has cooled for a while.

CAUTION

  • If the battery is charged while it is heated because it has been left for a long time in a location subject to direct sunlight or because the battery has just been used, the charge indicator lamp of the charger lights for 0.3 seconds, does not light for 0.3 seconds (off for 0.3 seconds). In such a case, first let the battery cool, then start charging.
  • When the charge indicator lamp fl ickers (at 0.2-second intervals), check for and take out any foreign objects in the charger’s battery connector. If there are no foreign objects, it is probable that the battery or charger is malfunctioning. Take it to your authorized Service Center.
  • Since the built-in microcomputer takes about 3 seconds to confirm that the battery being charged with UC18YSL3 is taken out, wait for a minimum of 3 seconds before reinserting it to continue charging. If the battery is reinserted within 3 seconds, the battery may not be properly charged.

1 How to use the LED light

NOTE

  • Press the light section switch on the switch panel to change the lighting mode of the LED light from “Always-ON” → “SW interlocked” → “OFF”.
  • To conserve battery power, make sure to extinguish the light as much as possible.
  • To prevent the battery power consumption caused by forgetting to turn off the LED light, the light goes off automatically in about 10 minutes.

Tightening mode selector function

CAUTION
Select tightening mode while the trigger switch is released. Failure to do so could result in malfunction.

By using the Tightening mode selector switch, the tightening torque can be adjusted according to the type of work. The Tightening mode switches between 5 diff erent modes each time the Tightening mode selector switch is pressed. Upon pulling the trigger switch in bolt single mode, the driver will automatically stop after applying a number of impacts. Soft/power/bolt and self-drilling screw mode will commence impact upon pulling the trigger switch and will continuously apply impact without auto-stopping.
Soft mode is a mode that does not inflict damage on thin nails or decorative materials. Power mode can be used for normal work up to heavy load work.

Bolt mode has a short pull margin for the trigger switch, making the driver ideal for high-speed tightening work. The bolt single mode controls the impact, allowing control of the tightening force. Use this mode for delicate work such as tightening bolts for racks, fences, furniture, etc. Self-drilling screw mode is ideal for tightening self-drilling screws by reducing the chances of overtightening that could result in severing the screw head, breaking the screw, or slippage.

NOTE

  • The appropriate mode diff ers depending on the screw and the material being screwed. Drive in a few test screws and adjust the mode setting accordingly.
  • The tightening mode selector switch can only be set after the battery has been installed in the driver and the trigger switch has been pulled once.

MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION

  1. Inspecting the driver bit Using a broken bit or one with a worn-out tip is dangerous because the bit can slip. Replace it.

  2. Inspecting the mounting screws
Regularly inspect all mounting screws and ensure that they are properly tightened. Should any of the screws be loose, retighten them immediately. Failure to do so could result in serious hazards.

  3. Maintenance of the motor
The motor unit winding is the very “heart” of the power tool. Exercise due care to ensure the winding does not become damaged and/or wet with oil or water.

  4. Inspection of terminals (tool and battery)
Check to make sure that swarf and dust have not collected on the terminals. On occasion check prior, during and after the operation.
    CAUTION
Remove any swarf or dust which may have been collected on the terminals. Failure to do so may result in malfunction.

  5. Cleaning on the outside
When the power tool is stained, wipe with a soft dry cloth or a cloth moistened with soapy water. Do not use chloric solvents, gasoline or paint thinner, for they melt plastics.

  6. Storage
Store the power tool and battery in a place in which the temperature is less than 40°C and out of reach of children.

NOTE
Storing lithium-ion batteries.

Make sure the lithium-ion batteries have been fully charged before storing them. Prolonged storage (3 months or more) of batteries with a low charge may result in performance deterioration, significantly reducing battery usage time or rendering the batteries incapable of holding a charge. However, significantly reduced battery usage time may be recovered by repeatedly charging and using the batteries two to fi ve times.

If the battery usage time is extremely short despite repeated charging and use, consider the batteries dead and purchase new batteries.

CAUTION
In the operation and maintenance of power tools, the safety regulations and standards prescribed in each country must be observed.

Important notice on the batteries for the HiKOKI cordless power tools

The declared vibration total value and the declared noise emission value have been measured in accordance with a standard test method and may be used for comparing one tool with another. They may also be used in a preliminary assessment of exposure.

WARNING

  • The vibration and noise emission during actual use of the power tool can differ from the declared total value depending on the ways in which the tool is used especially what kind of workpiece is processed; and
  • Identify safety measures to protect the operator that is based on an estimation of exposure in the actual conditions of use (taking account of all parts of the operating cycle such as the times when the tool is switched off and when it is running idle in addition to the trigger time).

NOTE
Due to HiKOKI’s continuing program of research and development, the specifications herein are subject to change without prior notice.
