- Before taking the keyboard into operation, check that no security-relevant modifications have been made to the keyboard.
- Only enter the PIN via the numerical keypad on the terminal.
- Make sure that nobody watches you while you enter your PIN.
- While entering your PIN, make sure that the PIN LED flashes red, as this indicates that the card terminal is in Secure PIN Entry mode.
- In order to ensure protection of personal identification data (PIN), only use processor cards which satisfy the specifications of DIN ISO 7816 [2] and/or EMC 2000 [3].

Getting started
The KB100 SCR keyboard features an integrated smartcard reader on the top. The smartcard reader can be used to read and write smartcards. Corresponding software is required for this purpose, e.g. for smartcard login, online banking or applications with digital signatures.
Please insert the smartcard into the smartcard reader with the chip facing towards you.
Connecting the device to USB port
- Your device is a plug-and-play device. You can connect the device while the PC is running, so there is no need to switch it off first.
- Insert the USB connector into one of the available USB ports on your PC. The device will be recognized automatically. The operating system will then attempt to install the drivers.
Installing drivers and software
- Drivers need to be installed before you can use the smartcard reader. The necessary drivers and software tools you can find at http://www.fujitsu.com/fts/download.
- Follow the instructions in the New Hardware Wizard, which guides you through the installation.
- The KB100 SCR keyboard has a CCID-compatible card reader. CCID is a standard interface which is supported from Windows XP onwards with a generic driver.
- In order to use Secure PIN Entry (SPE), please install the smartcard reader driver you can find at http://www.fujitsu.com/fts/download.
Operation
- Position the keyboard so that you can use it without any noticeable strain.
- The keyboard should be parallel to the upper part of your body. This positioning will help you to keep your shoulders and arms in a relaxed position.
- The distance between the keyboard and the edge of the desk should be 5 to 10 cm.
- When typing, hold your hands and forearms so that they form as natural a line as possible.
- Do not angle your hands too far to the left or right.

Security-related functions
The chip card terminal has several security functions which ensure secure operation.
Secure PIN Entry (SPE)
Secure PIN Entry mode is signaled by the red flashing PIN LED.
- In order to ensure the integrity and authenticity of the entered PIN, the Secure PIN Entry mode (SPE) is executed with the functions “Secure PIN Entry” and “Memory Reprocessing”.
- The Secure PIN Entry mode is started by the application software through an explicit CT command [CCID] [6]. This ensures that the entered PIN is transferred directly to the signature card after intermediate storage in the RAM, and that the memory area required for processing in the controller is deleted again when the SPE mode is exited.
- Secure PIN Entry mode is signaled by the red flashing PIN LED.
- Only asterisks are transmitted to the PC and/or the application software in order to display the progress as the PIN is entered.
- This ensures that the entered PIN never leaves the terminal as plain text.
- The table below details the functions and keys with which the PIN entry can be edited and/or confirmed.
The PIN can only be entered via the numerical keys on the numerical keypad:
Function | Numercal keypad | Alphanumeric area |
---|---|---|
Key | Special descr. | |
Entry confirmation | [Enter] | [OK] |
Cancel | [+] | [CANCEL] |
Undo | [-] | [ß] |
The Secure PIN Entry mode (SPE) is exited by pressing the CANCEL/Esc key or after the set entry time elapses.
Displaying the different operating states
The different operating states which are signalled with the aid of the display LEDs are listed below.
Description of function | LED legend | Color/mode |
---|---|---|
Secure PIN Entry active | PIN DATA | Red / flashing (500ms on-off) Blue / off |
NUM active | 1 | Blue / on |
Caps Lock active | A | Blue / on |

Chip card read/write access | DATA PIN | Blue / flashing Red / off |
Notes for application developers
- Before the chip card terminal can be taken into operation it is first necessary to install the necessary drivers as described in the chapter entitled “Installing drivers and software”.
- Application software is not included with the delivery package of the chip card terminal. Application developers have the option of initiating the Secure PIN Entry mode (SPE) with certain instruction bytes, e.g. via the interfaces PC/SC [7] or CT-API [8].
The approved instruction bytes are listed in the table below::
