Thank you for purchasing a Pro-Ject Audio Systems phono preamplifier.

  • Warns of danger to the user, the device or possible incorrect operation.
  • Particularly important note

Safety instructions

Only connect the power supply of the device to a power socket if you have ensured that the mains voltage of the socket to which it is to be connected corresponds to the voltage specified on the power supply. In order to be able to interrupt the connection to the power supply in a dangerous situation, the plug-in power supply must be removed from the main socket. Therefore, ensure unhindered access to the power socket at all times. Always grip the power supply unit by the housing. Do not pull on the cable itself. Never touch the power supply or device with damp or wet hands. Make sure that no liquid gets into the power supply or device, or is dripped or splashed onto it. Never place water containers (e.g. vases) or burning objects (e.g. candles) on or next to the device. Operation in a damp or wet environment is not permitted.

Connections

Pro-Ject-DS3-Tube-Box-fig- \(1\)

  • Make all connections and disconnections only with the device disconnected from the mains.
  • A phono input (e.g. marked RIAA, or PHONO) is not a high-level input! Make sure the channels are assigned correctly. Red sockets carry the right channel signal, white sockets carry the left channel signal.
  • Only use the DC power supply included with the device.

Connecting the record player
Connect the signal cable of the turntable to the input jacks (5-pin mini XLR, XLR, or RCA). When using the RCA input, please also connect the cable lug of the ground cable to the ground terminal of the phono box.

Connection to the amplifier
Connect the Outputs (balanced XLR or RCA) of the phono preamplifier to one of the high-level inputs (e.g. AUX, TAPE, or DAT) of the amplifier.

RCA and XLR outputs are separated and play simultaneously. Therefore, 2 amplifiers can be connected.

Power connection and methods for turning the device on and off
The device is connected to the power supply using the included power adapter. First, connect the plug of the supply cable to the Power 18V socket on the back of the device. Then connect to the power grid.

  1. Switch on or into standby using the button on the device
The button on the left on the front of the device switches the device on and also returns it to standby. The blue light indicator above the button indicates that the device is switched on. If there is a trigger signal, the device cannot be switched off using the button.

  2. Remote switching using a trigger

    • The device can be switched on via other box design components if a 12V
    • Trigger voltage is present at the 2.5mm socket labeled Trigger Input. Special accessories are available
    • Power-on cable (polarity: ) is available in different lengths. The remote switch-on signal can can be forwarded to other devices via the trigger output socket. If the 12V trigger signal is switched off, the device also switches off.

Trigger cables may only be plugged into the sockets when there is no power. Otherwise, the device may be damaged.

Settings

Input
Selects balanced (5-pin mini-XLR or XLR) or unbalanced (RCA) input.

2 turntables can be connected to the amplifier at the same time and the button acts as an input selector switch. The settings for the respective inputs are saved.

Pickup settings

  • The three buttons on the right side are used to set input impedance (Loading Ohms), input capacitance (Loading pF), and input gain (Gain dB).
  • To use the dial, Loading Ohms must be set to Variable. Use the rotary control to adjust the input impedance to the desired value (10Ω-1000Ω). ONLY IMPORTANT FOR LOW-OUTPUT MC CARTRIDGES!
  • To find out what type your pickup is, refer to your pickup’s product information. This literature also provides the correct input impedance and input capacitance specified in which the pickup should be operated. If in doubt, please contact your dealer.

Examples:

  • Ortofon 2M Red (MM):
Input impedance 47kOhm, input capacitance 150pF, input gain 40dB

  • Ortofon X5-MC (High Output MC):
Input impedance 47kOhm, input capacitance 300pF, input gain 40dB

  • Ortofon Quintet Red (Low Output MC):
Input impedance 50 ohms (set loading ohms to variable & set 50 ohms with the rotary encoder), input capacitance – any (not relevant), input gain 60 dB

Subsonic
The button on the front of the device activates or deactivates the subsonic filter. The LED to the right shows whether the filter is active or not.
