Important Safeguards
Read these instructions carefully and retain them for future use. If this
product is passed to a third party, then Cog these instructions must be
included.
When using the product, basic safety precautions should always be followed to
reduce the risk of injury including the following:
- Thin layers or layers with random dots or holes when making a print could indicate under-extrusion. This means that your printer cannot supply the correct amount of material needed to print a layer. This can be caused by debris or carbonized plastic that sticks in the nozzle which may occur if the nozzle has been heating up without extruding any filament.
- When you insert the filament into the printer, make sure your hands are not slippery as this may cause you to let go of the filament and release the tension.
- When the print is finished, remove the filament from the printer but make sure to keep the tension on the spools so it does not accidentally unwind.
- Should you find or notice an entanglement or a knot, hold the spool horizontally and unwind until the knot is removed. Then rewind the spool using a decent amount of tension on the filament.
- Always lock the filament in the small holes in the sides of the spools and make sure that it cannot come loose.
Before First Use
Risk of suffocation!
Keep any packaging materials away from children and pets – these materials are
a potential source of danger, e.g. suffocation.
- Remove all the packing materials.
- Check the product for transport damages.
Before Printing, do a Full Cold-Pull Procedure and Follow the Steps
- Make sure you have good access to the hot end. For Bowden- type extruders, this might mean that you need to unplug the guide tube (Fig. 1).
- Heat the nozzle to around 190-220 °C (374-428 °F) (Fig. 2). If you have only printed with PLA, heat the nozzle to around the 220 °C (428 °F). Risk of burns! Do not touch the bed or the tip of the nozzle with your fingers. Those parts get very hot.
- Insert a piece of white/bright nylon or a glow-in-the-dark – a strong filament. Push it down hard by hand. If there is some filament coming out of the nozzle, then keep pushing (Fig. 3).
- Stop the heater and let the printer cool down to around 80 °C (176 °F) (Fig. 4). Keep pushing until strong resistance is felt.
- When the printer has cooled down, pull back the filament out of the hot end and inspect the semi-molten end (Fig. 5). This should have some dirt and impurities on it. If you have difficulties, slightly increase the temperature by 5 °C (41 °F).
- Cut off the dirty part of the filament and repeat from step 2 until your filament comes out clean (Fig. 6).
Print Recommendations
Every brand of filaments can print slightly different. If this is your first- time using Amazon Basics filaments we recommend that you first tune your settings for the best results.
4.1 PLA
- Heated bed temperature: 40-55 °C (104-131 °F)
- Enclosure: Not necessary
- Build surface: Painter’s tape, PEI, Glass plate, Glue Stick, Hair spray
- Extruder temperature: 190-220 °C (374-428 °F) (No special hot-end required)
- Cooling: Part cooling fan required
- Fan speed: 100 %
A.2 ABS
- Heated bed temperature: 95-110 °C (203-230 °F)
- Enclosure: Recommended
- Build surface: Kapton tape or Magigoo, Dimafix, 3Dlac, Aprintafix etc.
- Extruder temperature: 235-260 °C (455-500 °F) (No special hot-end required)
- Cooling: Part cooling fan not required
- Fan speed: 0 %
A.3 PETG
- Heated bed temperature: 70-90 °C (158-194 °F)
- Enclosure: Optional
- Build surface: Glue stick, painter’s tape, Magigoo etc.
- (Extruder temperature: 230-250 °C (446-482 °F) (No special hot-end required)
- Cooling: Part cooling fan required
- Fan speed: 15-50 % (depending on geometry and print speed)
4.4 Drying
We take great care, that when you open up your new spool of filament, there
is no moisture trapped inside. Filament can, however, start absorbing moisture
from the environment immediately after being removed from the packaging. For
this reason, we recommend that when you are not using the filament that you
store it in a cool and well dried environment (15-25 °C/ 59-77 °F). If your
material did absorb moisture, we recommend that you make use of a drying
solution like a food dehydrator or similar equipment that can dry filament.
Troubleshooting
5.1 General tips
- Make sure every time you load or unload a new filament you clean the nozzle; we suggest using a cold pull technique (if you have never heard of it please check chapter 3).
- Always make sure the build plate is leveled correctly.
- Be sure that you have the correct adhesion surface or adhesive solution.
- 3D printers always need a continuous maintenance to perform at their best. Clean them and make sure that all the parts are properly lubricated and in good condition, make sure to repair them or replace parts that are not working correctly anymore.
- Store your filament properly, after you remove it from the printer make sure you do not let go of the filament but lock it in the side holes of the spool, this will prevent the creation of accidental tangles in the spool.
- Most 3D printers have an offset of temperature between what is displayed on the screen of the 3D printer and the actual temperature inside the nozzle. It is suggested to measure this differently, using a multimeter with a thermocouple and be aware of it to make sure that you are printing at the right temperature.
5.2 PLA
Adhesion: PLA is a easy to print filament, but when you are printing really
big parts with high infill it is suggested to use an adhesive and at least a
temperature of 60-65°C (140-149 °F) on the build plate to make sure that
everything will proceed correctly.
5.3.ABS
5.3.1 Warping
ABS is a well-known material to warp more easily than others. Make sure you
have a correct temperature on your build plate (usually between 95-100 °C /
203-230 °F) and use a matching adhesive. It is not recommended to use a
cooling fan and you will have a higher chance of success if you use an
enclosure around your 3D printer.
5.3.2 Layer delamination
This usually happens when the layer below the one you are laying down is
already cooled down too much. This can be avoided by printing in a room with
controlled temperature, using an enclosure, avoiding the use of a cooling fan
and printing faster if possible.
5.3.3 Smell
When printing with ABS, it is recommended to have good ventilation in the
room.
5.4 PETG
5.4.1 Adhesion
PETG really likes to stick to a PEI surface, to avoid damaging the build
plat whole removing the printed part, we recommend applying some glue stick or
other adhesives on top of the PEI surface.
5.4.2 Stringing
Proceed to print a small retraction test to be able to fine-tune your
printing parameters. If this is still not working, it could be that you are
using too high of a temperature.
5.5 Bed and Storage Temperature
Because Amazon Basics filament is known as a low-warping material, 3D-
printing does not require an enclosed chamber (For ABS this is still advised).
For more adhesion on the print bed, you can apply an adhesion stick or hair
spray.
