FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the Recon
Controller. This page will be updated as needed.
We also have a quick setup video for the Recon Controller available here.
Can I use the Recon Controller with my wireless Turtle Beach headset?
-
Yes, with limited functionality. As there is no headset physically connected to the controller’s headset jack, the volume controls on the controller itself will be disabled.
Instead, you will need to use the volume controls on the headset itself. -
Do the audio processing features affect a wireless headset?
- No. The audio features provided by the controller — including Presets and Superhuman Hearing, as well as Game and Chat balance — are only engaged when a wired headset is physically plugged into the controller’s headset jack. A wireless headset does not use that connection and has its own independent connection directly to the console.
-
Do I need to select anything in the menus?
- With a WIRELESS HEADSET: No. A wireless headset does not get assigned to the controller; if the headset is set as the default input and output device, you would not need to configure any additional settings.
- With a WIRED HEADSET: Yes. You would need to follow the standard Xbox procedure for setting up a wired headset for the first time. This process is as follows:
- Securely plug the headset in to the controller’s headset jack.
- Make sure the controller is assigned to the profile you are logged into/using.
- Configure the audio settings for both the console and the game in question to your preference.
-
Can I use the SuperAmp and the Recon Controller at the same time?
- Yes, with limited features/controls. To set your SuperAmp up for use with the Recon Controller, please do the following:
- Make sure the SuperAmp is in the Xbox mode. This can be done within the desktop version of the Audio Hub.
- Connect the headset/SuperAmp to a USB port on the console, and configure the settings as shown here.
Connect the controller itself to a USB port on the console.
PLEASE NOTE: When used with a SuperAmp, volume controls/buttons on the Recon Controller related to the volume (including the mic mute) will not work. Other controls, including the button mapping and Pro-Aim, will. When using the SuperAmp with the Recon Controller, we recommend creating a EQ Presets profile that does not have any alterations to the volume — ie, does not use Bass Boost, Bass + Treble Boost, or Vocal Boost — and instead adjusting the EQ Presets and audio from the mobile version of the SuperAmp.
-
Can I use the Recon Controller with my Windows 10 or 11 PC?
- Yes. The Recon Controller was designed to be used with an Xbox console or Windows 10 & 11.
Please Note: This controller is not compatible for use/cannot be used with a Windows 7 computer, and there are no alternate setups for Windows 7
- Yes. The Recon Controller was designed to be used with an Xbox console or Windows 10 & 11.
CONTROLLER FEATURES
- Can I use the controller when it is disconnected from its cable? Is this a wireless controller?
- No. This is a wired controller that can be disconnected when needed. The controller must be securely plugged in via its cable to be used.
- Which buttons on the controller can I re-map? How do I re-map those buttons?
- On the Recon Controller, you can remap any of the controller buttons to the Left and Right Quick-Action buttons and save them to a profile. The Quick-Action buttons are the buttons located on the back of the controller.
- PLEASE NOTE: When re-mapping a button to the Right Quick Action button, make sure to turn Pro-Aim OFF, as this will affect the button that is mapped to that Right Quick Action button. In addition, the controller’s firmware will need to be updated to re-map certain buttons to the Quick Action-buttons.
- To start the mapping process:
- Click on the Mode Button and cycle until you on to the Button Mapping option (the LED with the image of the controller will light up).
- Once the Button Mapping icon lights up, press the Select Button to choose a profile. Once you reach the right profile, activate mapping mode by holding down the select button for 2 – 3 seconds or so.
- After doing that, press the Quick-Action button (left or right button on the back of the controller) that you want to map to.
- Then, press the button on the controller that you wanted to assign to the Quick-Action button. After doing that, press and hold the Select button for 2- 3 seconds again. That should save the assignment that you’ve made.
PLEASE NOTE: For more information on the Quick Action Button Mapping, please click here.
QUICK-ACTION BUTTON MAPPING
The Recon Controller has specific buttons that can be re-mapped to serve
different functions.
You can map any of the following controller buttons to the programmable Quick Action Buttons P1 and P2:
- A/B/X/Y
- Left Stick Click/Right Stick Click
- the Digital Up/Down/Left/Right Pad
- the LB and RB buttons
- the Left and Right Triggers.
To do so:
-
First, make sure the Recon Controller is updated to the latest firmware, as indicated here.
-
Once the controller is fully updated, select the profile you’d like to edit. Press the MODE button until the Button Mapping indicator lights up.
Then, press the SELECT button until your preferred profile number lights up.
-
Activate Mapping Mode by holding the SELECT button down for 2 seconds. The profile lights will blink.
-
On the bottom of the controller, press the Quick Action button you’d like to map to.
-
Then, select the button you’d like to map to that Quick Action button. The profile lights will blink again.
PLEASE NOTE: New button mappings will override older ones. To delete a button mapping, repeat this process — but when you reach Step 5, press the Quick Action button again.
PC SETUP
Please Note: The Recon Controller was designed to be used with an Xbox
console or Windows 10 & 11.
This controller is not compatible for use/cannot be used with a Windows 7
computer, and there are no alternate setups for Windows 7.
To set your Recon Controller up for use with a Windows 10 or 11 PC, please do
the following.
-
Plug the controller into the computer with the included USB cable.
-
If you’re using a headset with the controller, plug the headset into the controller itself
Please Note: All features will work on PC, except for Chat Mix when 3.5mm headset is connected.
XBOX SETUP
To set up your Recon Controller for use with an Xbox, please do the following. Please note that the information in the following article applies to both the Xbox One console and the Xbox Series X|S consoles.
-
Plug the controller into the Xbox console, using the included USB cable
-
If you’re using a headset with the controller, plug the headset into the controller itself. Make sure the controller is assigned to the correct profile.
Please Note: When a 3.5mm headset is connected, the Volume, Chat, Mic Monitoring and Mic Mute controls on the Recon controller will alter the setting sliders on Xbox.
CONTROLLER DRIFT (TROUBLESHOOTING)
If you notice that the view of the game/your game character is moving when the
controller itself isn’t being touched, or that the controller is not
responding as expected when the sticks are moved, you may need to recalibrate
the controller itself.
To recalibrate the controller, please do the following:
- Connect the included USB cable to the controller. Do not connect the other end of the cable to the console or PC.
- Press and hold the X button and the D-Pad Up button while connecting the cable to the PC/console.
- Do not release those buttons until the controller is fully powered up/all the LEDs on the controller illuminate. The white Xbox connection LED will flash.
- Move each of the controller axes through their full range of motion:
- Left Stick: Left to Right
- Left Stick: Forward to Back
- Right Stick: Left to Right
- Right Stick: Forward to Back
- Left Trigger: Pull Back
- Right Trigger: Pull Back
- Press both the Y button and D-Pad Down to end calibration. All controller LEDs should be lit.
- Re-check the stick performance in the Controller Tester app, or in the game.
This re-calibration should resolve any issues you may have with drifting. If you perform these steps, but still have drift issues, please contact our support team for further assistance.
UPDATE FIRMWARE,RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULT (TROUBLESHOOTING)
For the best experience possible, we recommend always running the latest firmware for your Recon Controller. This is also an important step for troubleshooting, as well.
For the most up-to-date information regarding firmware updates for the Recon Controller, please refer to the Recon Controller section of our Knowledgebase, or to the Turtle Beach Audio Hub page.
UPDATE FIRMWARE
The setup video available here also shows the below firmware update process.
To update the firmware for your controller, please do the following:
First, download the Turtle Beach Control Center. The download links below are
region-specific, so be sure to select the correct link for your region. The
Control Center is available for both Xbox consoles and PC.
US/Canada
EU/UK
Once the Turtle Beach Control Center has been downloaded, open the Control
Center. If your controller isn’t already connected to the console/computer,
you’ll see a visual prompt to connect the controller.
Once the update is complete, you’ll see a notice on the controller image
saying that your device is up to date.
To exit the Control Center:
-
PC/Xbox: Press B on the controller itself and follow the prompts to close the Control Center; you will see a prompt asking if you would like to exit the program. Select Yes.
-
PC: With the mouse, navigate to the upper-right hand corner of the screen; an X will appear.
(This X appears only when the mouse is hovering over that upper-right corner.) Click on that X to close the program. You will receive the same exit prompt. -
PC: On the keyboard, press the ALT and F4 keys at the same time. You will receive the same exit prompt.
RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULT
One feature included in the 8/20/2021 update is an option to Reset to Factory Default. The Control Center does not need to be actively running to perform the Reset to Factory Default, but the controller’s firmware must first be updated before the controller can be Reset. The Reset to Factory Default can be done while the headset is connected to either the Xbox console or a PC.
PLEASE NOTE: This process will not remove any stored calibration data but will completely reset/delete all the button mapping and preferences set for every profile stored in the controller. If the Recon Controller needs to be recalibrated, please click here.
To reset the controller to factory default, please do the following:
- Connect the Type-C cable to the controller. Do not connect Type-A to the console or PC yet.
- Press and hold down all ABXY face buttons; at the same time, connect the Type-A end to the PC or Xbox. Keep holding the buttons down after the controller is plugged in.
- Do not release the buttons until all the LEDs on the controller illuminate. Once all the LEDs illuminate, release those buttons.
Your controller should now be factory reset.
