Solving your Bluetooth pairing & connection issues
First, let’s verify the Bluetooth issue you’re experiencing:
- I’m struggling to connect two Bluetooth devices for the first time or pair a second device. Linking two devices for the first time is called Bluetooth Pairing and is often activated automatically when you’re using your product for the first time. We refer to pairing to a subsequent device as ‘second-time pairing’. Please continue reading the article below.
- I’ve successfully paired and connected two devices, but the sound is disrupted, I can’t hear anything or I don’t know what sound settings to pick. Please visit our article on tips on how to solve Bluetooth sound issues.
What is Bluetooth pairing?
- When you meet a new person, you usually introduce yourself first and exchange basic information. You won’t have to do this again the next time you meet your new acquaintance – unless you forget who they are or vice versa.
- Bluetooth pairing is similar. When two Bluetooth devices are pairing, they exchange information. They establish a connection and recognise each other in the future without any introduction – unless one device forgets the other one or vice versa.
First-time pairing versus second-time pairing
Many new Bluetooth devices (e.g. wireless headphones) automatically go into
pairing mode the first time you turn them ON. Your device becomes discoverable
on its own. At this point, your device doesn’t have any pairing information
saved. However, when you pair a second device, you must manually activate
pairing mode. Your device won’t enter pairing mode automatically, unlike the
first time.
The 7-second rule
With many Sony Bluetooth devices, activating pairing mode is done by pressing and holding the pairing/power button on your device for about 7 seconds. You will often hear an audio cue or see a blue flashing LED to inform you that your device has entered pairing mode. Your device will remain in pairing mode for a few minutes and will turn itself off if the pairing procedure isn’t successful.
Be sure to check your manual or Help Guide to learn how to activate Bluetooth pairing on your product.
- Example: how to activate pairing mode for the WH-1000XM4 headphones
- Where to find online manuals in your language
Keep them close and charged
- Place your devices within 1 meter (3 feet) of each other while pairing.
- Make sure both devices have ample power. Pairing can fail if one device has low battery power.
NFC: the easiest way to pair and connect headphones with your smartphone
Switching back and forth between Bluetooth devices in your settings can be
tedious. Did you know you can avoid the settings menu entirely when you’re
using an Android phone?
Near Field Communication (NFC) is the technology used in contactless payments. You hold your card to a card reader and wait until your payment is approved. Similarly, NFC can also be used to pair and connect Bluetooth devices. If your devices are both equipped with NFC, and the NFC setting on your phone is enabled, you can pair them instantly without going through Bluetooth settings:
- Make sure you’ve enabled NFC on your phone.
- Unlock your phone.
- Hold it close to the NFC logo (e.g. left headphone cup on WH-1000XM4). You don’t even have to power on your headphones. They will turn on automatically.
- Bluetooth pairing will occur, or the Bluetooth connection will be activated if you’ve previously paired the devices.
For more information, visit the article: What’s the easiest way to pair my Bluetooth headphones with an Android phone?
I can’t find the device in the Bluetooth list: try turning Bluetooth OFF
and ON again
Turning Bluetooth OFF and ON again is especially useful when the device you
want to connect to doesn’t appear in the Bluetooth menu list. Turning
Bluetooth OFF and ON again refreshes the list. This tip applies to
smartphones, computers and TVs.
- Xperia (Android) smartphone: How to turn Bluetooth ON/OFF
- Windows 10 laptop: How to turn Bluetooth ON/OFF
I can’t find the device in the Bluetooth list: check if it’s automatically
paired with a previous device
The Bluetooth device you’re trying to connect to may not show up in the
Bluetooth list if it’s already connected with a different device (e.g. a
relative’s phone might already be connected to your speaker or headphones
without you noticing). You need to disable that connection first.
How do I know if an Xperia smartphone is already connected via Bluetooth?
Some devices (e.g. the WH-1000XM4 headphones) can simultaneously connect to
two Bluetooth devices. This is called a ‘multipoint connection’. For more
information, visit the article: Connect the WH-1000XM4 headphones to two
devices (multipoint connection).
Although I’ve paired my devices, they won’t connect: delete pairing information and pair again
Although uncommon, it’s possible that two devices are successfully paired, but refuse to connect. If you’re sure this is not caused by a low battery level or a mismatch of Bluetooth profiles, delete the pairing information and pair the devices again to solve this glitch. You can delete (Forget/Remove device) Bluetooth pairing information in your phone’s or computer’s Bluetooth menu.
- Xperia (Android) smartphone: How to disconnect a device or delete its pairing information
- Windows 10 laptop: How to disconnect a device or delete its pairing information
Also, there’s a limit to how many Bluetooth devices you can pair. Most smartphones can save Bluetooth pairing information for up to eight devices. That limit means your phone will delete the oldest pairing information if you try to pair a ninth device.
I can’t pair devices: make sure the Bluetooth profiles of your devices match
What is a Bluetooth profile?
The Bluetooth profile of a device determines what Bluetooth devices it can
communicate with and how this communication is done. Take these two examples:
- Some TVs support Bluetooth remotes, but not Bluetooth headphones. The headphones need a different Bluetooth profile than the remote control.
- [VIDEO] How to connect Bluetooth headphones to your Sony TV
- There are transmitting and receiving Bluetooth devices. Your phone can send music to a speaker, but not the other way around.
Two Bluetooth devices that want to communicate wirelessly need to have compatible profiles. Always consider the purpose of the device you’re trying to pair. You can check if your device supports the necessary profile in your device’s manual and specifications. Manuals are posted on our support website. If a device allows for more than one mode of connection (e.g. phone, music, messages, and address book), try disabling certain modes on either connected device to see if that solves your problem.

Have you tried resetting & initialising both devices?
- Headphones, soundbars, wireless speakers and other Bluetooth devices have a Reset function, which you can find explained in their manual. Manuals are posted on our support website.
- If you’ve tried everything and Bluetooth still isn’t working, Reset your device first, then Initialise it. Keep in mind that initialising your device will restore factory settings. After you initialise your device, it will automatically go into pairing mode when you turn it on, as if it were brand new.
Why do I hear sound with noise-cancelling on?
Noise-cancelling can be the very reason you chose to buy headphones or
earphones. You may want to cancel out noise on your daily commute, during a
flight, or block out noisy neighbours.
Did you know?
Sound can only travel if there is a medium to transport it, for e.g. air,
water, glass or metal. If you stand in an empty room with a speaker playing
music, you will hear the music. However, if the air from this room is removed
for a few seconds, the speaker will still function, but you won’t hear any
sound as there’s no medium to transport the sound waves. Similarly, Space is a
vacuum — so it generally doesn’t carry sound waves like air does here on Earth
(though some sounds do exist in outer space, we just can’t hear them)
Why do I hear external sound when noise cancelling is on?
Air trapped between your audio device and eardrum
Noise-cancelling technology cannot completely isolate sound due to the air
trapped between your audio device and eardrum. However, the air is important
for you to be able to hear music. Suppose you were able to remove the trapped
air, the net effect is silence, no matter what volume your music is on. Why?
There would be no medium for the sound to travel from the audio device to your
eardrum.
Noise cancellation at different pitch levels
Have you ever noticed how effective noise-cancelling is in cutting out the
sound from an airplane engine? But when someone next to you speaks, you hear
their voice. Why is that?
- Sound waves from an airplane (Low pitch)
- Sound waves when someone speaks (High-medium-low pitch)
How does noise cancellation work?
Noise-cancelling audio devices use a built-in microphone to analyse the
ambient sound waves around you and generate the opposite sound waves in order
to reduce surrounding sound. Noise-cancelling devices have a built-in
microphone which generates the opposite reversed sound waves to neutralise
surrounding noise. Noise cancellation works best when the ambient sound around
you is constant and around the low to medium pitch range.
Now consider the fluctuating pitch levels when you speak. The sudden changes in pitch occur too frequently and make it difficult for any noise-cancelling audio device to analyse and process these differences. Therefore, some noises are heard whilst others are not.
How to improve noise cancellation
Turn off Adaptive Sound Control
Adaptive Sound Control changes the noise-cancelling intensity based on the
ambient noise in your surroundings. The intensity of noise cancellation is
increased in a loud environment and reduced in a quiet environment. Turn off
the Adaptive Sound Control if you want the strongest noise cancelling level in
any situation.
To turn off Adaptive Sound Control
Optimise noise-cancelling (NC Optimizer) – for Headphones only
The NC Optimiser function analyses the shape of your face, hairstyle, whether
you are wearing glasses and even pressure changes on aeroplanes. Try to
optimise noise-cancelling and see whether the noise-cancelling intensity
improves.
- To optimise noise cancelling (NC Optimizer)
Make sure to wear the device correctly
One of the easiest ways to maximise the noise cancellation capabilities of
your audio device is to fit the device correctly. A tighter seal will already
block out a certain level of ambient noise. Once you find the right fit, you
should notice stronger noise cancellation.

Solving your Bluetooth sound issues and explaining Sound settings
First, let’s verify the Bluetooth issue you’re experiencing:
- I’ve successfully paired two devices, but the sound gets disrupted, I can’t hear anything (on both sides or one side), or people can’t hear me during a call. Please continue reading.
- I’m struggling to connect two Bluetooth devices for the first time. Linking two devices for the first time is called Bluetooth Pairing. Please visit our How to pair and connect Bluetooth devices article for help.
I experience sound disruptions: keep distance and obstacles in the
environment in mind
Once you’ve paired and connected your devices, distance and any obstacles can
affect the Bluetooth connection. Picture your Bluetooth signal as an invisible
cable of about 10 metres (33 feet). This 10-metre range decreases if obstacles
(e.g. metal objects, concrete walls or other wave-emitting devices) get in the
way between your Bluetooth devices. Other times, you can experience sudden
sound drops when the scenery changes from a closed to a wide outdoor area
because the Bluetooth signal suddenly starts to bounce all over the place. For
example, you can experience this when exiting a tunnel or leaving a wooded
area for a wide and open area. If you’re using earbuds, keep in mind that the
left and right earbuds communicate through Bluetooth, so they’re especially
prone to this phenomenon. This should be intermittent, and although
inconvenient, it’s no reason for concern.
If sound drops and doesn’t come back automatically, try the following:
- Earbuds: Put your earbuds back in the charging case for a few seconds.
- Other headphones: Turn your headphones off and on again.
I can’t hear anything during phone calls, or there’s a lot of noise
Phone calls & Output settings
Check what Bluetooth devices are currently connected to your smartphone. If
you’ve paired your smartphone with several Bluetooth devices, sound might be
coming out of a different device. Usually, your phone gives you several sound
output options: you can choose between your phone speaker, the phone
loudspeaker, or other Bluetooth devices that support phone calls. Make sure
you have the right one selected!
How do I know if an Xperia (Android) smartphone is already connected via Bluetooth?
Phone calls & Noise-cancellation
- Although Noise cancellation creates a quiet environment for you during phone calls, the person you’re talking to can still hear all the surrounding noise. Noise-cancellation reduces environmental noise that you can hear, but it doesn’t reduce the noise the headphones’ microphone can pick up.
- Two things that might also affect your headphones’ speaker are wind and fabric. If you’re wearing a hoody or a scarf, it might rub against the microphone, resulting in an unpleasant sound for the person listening. Wind can also cause this effect if it’s blowing straight in the microphone.
I can’t hear anything through my headphones connected to the computer
If you’ve successfully paired your headphones with the computer, but you still
can’t hear anything, you need to check your computer sound settings. Your
computer might still use the speakers by default. In the sound settings, you
can change the default sound output (i.e. the channel you play sound through).
Select your headphones instead of the default speakers.
Windows 10 steps
- Right-click the Speaker icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.
- Click on Open Sound settings.
- Under Output, select the output device you want to use (e.g. Headphones or Speakers).
- Under Input, select the input device you want to use (e.g. Microphone or External microphone).
- Note: Certain apps may be set up to use different sound devices than the one selected here. Even if you’ve set Headphones as your output device here, you might have to do it again in the video conference app you’re using (e.g. Microsoft Teams or Zoom).
If you’re struggling to pair your headphones with your computer, please visit our dedicated article: How to connect your Bluetooth headphones to a laptop/desktop computer.
There’s no sound during my video conference call
Certain video conference apps might require you to set up sound settings,
even if your headphones are connected. The app might not select the right
output device by default. Furthermore, your headphones might have two
different options available, and only one of them is meant for video
conference calls. You can play around with the settings to see what works for
you because depending on your computer brand, headphones or the app you’re
using, it might be a little different.
In short, do three checks:
- Make sure your headphones are connected to your computer
- Check your computer sound settings (Speakers versus Headphones)
- Check the video conference app sound settings (Headphones versus Headset).
If you can head sound through your headphones when using your computer, but not during video conference calls (e.g., Microsoft Teams meeting), chances are you need to change your Device Settings.
I experience sound disruptions: Charge your devices sufficiently before connecting
- Charge your Bluetooth devices using the supplied USB charging cable. To find out why you should use the provided cable, visit the article: Headphones won’t charge with third-party USB cables.
- First-time pairing or connecting devices might fail if one of the two devices is insufficiently charged. The device might not show up in the Bluetooth list.
Turn Bluetooth OFF and ON again
Turning Bluetooth OFF and ON again is especially useful when you can’t find
the device you want to connect to in your Bluetooth menu list. It’s a simple
trick that refreshes the Bluetooth list and applies to both smartphones and
computers.
Bear in mind that your device can try to connect to other surrounding
Bluetooth devices.

- Windows 10 laptop: How to turn Bluetooth ON/OFF
Check the list of paired Bluetooth devices
Pairing and connecting devices may fail if your device is near other Bluetooth devices you had paired it with before. Usually, Bluetooth devices automatically connect with the last device they linked with. Once a Bluetooth connection between two devices is active, a third device won’t be able to pick them up (unless they have the multipoint feature). In that case, you can either disconnect the connection or completely remove the pairing information of the device.

Restart both devices
If changing the settings doesn’t help, restart both devices (turn them off and
on again) and try to connect them again.
Reset & initialise both devices
- Headphones, soundbars, wireless speakers and other Bluetooth devices have a Reset function, which you can find explained in their manual. Manuals are posted on our support website.
- If you’ve tried everything and Bluetooth still isn’t working, Reset your device first, then Initialise it. Keep in mind that initialising your device will restore factory settings. After you initialise your device, it will automatically go into pairing mode when you turn it on, as if it were brand new.
What’s Bluetooth pairing?
Bluetooth pairing is a form of information registration for linking devices.
By registering device information (pairing) between devices, they can connect.
To use a Bluetooth device, you must first pair it with another Bluetooth
device. Pairing is a bit like exchanging phone numbers. Similar to how you
must trade phone numbers with a person you want to call, connecting Bluetooth
devices requires you first to pair them to register the pairing information of
each device. After pairing devices the first time, there is no need to repeat
this pairing process. That is because each device has saved the necessary
information and can therefore easily connect.
If the pairing information stored by your Bluetooth device is deleted (e.g. device reset), you will be unable to connect it to the device you previously registered. It’s a bit like forgetting someone’s phone number means that you cannot call him or her!
Should that happen, you will have to pair them again for them to be able to connect. In the same way, when you change your mobile device (e.g. when you buy a new smartphone), you must pair the new device and the headphone or speaker again.
Refer to the following pages for the pairing procedures for Bluetooth devices

- Walkman device (NWZA Series, NWZE Series, NWZS Series, NWZX Series)
- Android device (smartphone, tablet)
- iOS device (iPhone, iPad)
- Windows 7 – 8 – 10 – MAC
- Sony Android TVs
NOTE:
Not all Sony Android TVs can be used with Bluetooth headphones or speakers,
please verify that your TV model is in the list.
NOTE:
There is a limited amount of Bluetooth devices that can be registered to
Bluetooth headphones. If you have reached the maximum registration limit and
you attempt to register a new device, pairing information of one of the
devices you previously registered (the earliest device in your connection
history) will be deleted.
Bluetooth connection
A Bluetooth connection is a transmission between two Bluetooth devices. To complete the Bluetooth connection, you must first register the information of each device with the other. After pairing the devices the first time, there is no need to repeat the pairing process to connect again. Establishing a connection between two Bluetooth devices is like making a phone call. Similar to how you can call someone if you both know one another’s phone number; two devices can connect if they have been paired, thereby storing one another’s pairing information.
- The connection and disconnection procedures for Bluetooth devices differ depending on the product.
- For details, refer to your product’s help guide or instruction, available on this support website.

mode
By entering pairing mode, you make the device you want to connect to your
laptop or desktop computer discoverable.
The steps to enter pairing mode may vary depending on the device you want to connect (headphones, speakers, smartphone, etc.).
- Example: The WH-1000XM4 wireless Bluetooth headset immediately goes into pairing mode when used for the first time.
- However, the second time you pair it, you will have to press and hold the pairing mode button for 7 seconds.
