This guide provides a brief introduction to smart outdoor plug and the Kasa Smart app, as well as regulatory information.

Introduction

Extend your smart home outdoors with the weather-resistant smart outdoor plug. Power on your patio lights, holiday decorations, and more from the convenience of your smartphone. Turn each outlet on/off individually, set schedules, or use simple voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant to control all of your connected devices.

Appearance
This smart outdoor plug has two control button to turn on or off the plug-in devices and two LEDs to show you the current status of each connected device. The LEDs change color according to different status.

Set Up Your Smart Outdoor Plug
Follow the steps below to set up your plug via Kasa Smart app.

  1. Download and install Kasa app
    • Get the Kasa Smart app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, or by scanning the QR code below.
  2. Log in or sign up with TP-Link ID
    • Open the app, and log in with your TP-Link ID. If you don’t have an account, create one first.
  3. Add Device
    Tap the + button in the Kasa app, go to Smart Plug > Smart Outdoor Plug and then follow app instructions to complete the setup.

Main Device Controls
After you successfully set up your Smart Outdoor Plug, you will see the home page of the Kasa Smart app. Here you can view and manage all devices that you’ve added to Kasa. The two outlets of your plug are listed in the home page. Tap each of the outlets to control and manage them individually.

You can see all your Kasa devices listed in the Home page.

Turn On/Off the Plug
Turn on/off each outlet of your plug quickly by tapping the switch in the Home page. Tapping the device to enter its status page, you can also check or change its status.

Set Schedules
Schedule: Set schedules to automatically turn on/off the devices connected to your Smart Outdoor Plug according to your daily routine.

  1. Tap either outlet of your plug in the Home page, and then Tap .
  2. Tap + on the top right corner.
  3. Set a schedule to turn the connected device on or off.
    • E.g. I want to turn on the plugged-in outdoor light at 10:00 PM every day. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(6\)
  4. You can also choose to turn on/off the outlet simply at Sunrise or Sunset.
    • *The Sunrise and Sunset times are based on your location.
  5. Tap Save and you’ll see your schedule listed in the Schedule page. You can turn on or off the schedule at any time or add more schedules following the same steps. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(7\)

Set Timer

  • Timer: Set the timer for the connected devices to automatically turn on/off after the specified time.
  1. Tap either outlet of your plug in the Home page, and then tap .
  2. Set the time after which the connected device will be automatically turned on/off.
    • E.g. when I turn on the outdoor light, I want it to turn off automatically after 30 minutes.
  3. Tap START and you’ll see the timer starts counting down. Tap STOP to stop the Timer at any time.

Set Away Mode
Away Mode : Set Away Mode for the connected devices to turn on/off automatically at random intervals while you are away to make the appearance that someone is at home.

  1. Tap either outlet of your plug in the Home page, and then tap .
  2. Set the start and end time during which the connected device will be automatically turned on and off at random intervals, then choose the repeating frequency.
    • Note : The start and end time must be on the same day.
    • E.g. I want my outdoor light to turn on/off from 6:00 PM to 11:59 PM every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Check Runtime

  • Runtime: Check runtime to keep track of how long either outlet of your Smart Outdoor Plug has been working.
  1. Tap either outlet of your plug in the Home page, and then tap .
  2. Check the runtime for today, the past 7 days, or the past 30 days.tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(13\)

Manage Device Settings

  1. Tap either outlet of your plug in the Home page and then tap .
  2. Here you can customize settings of each outlet of your plug.tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(15\)

Change name and icon

  1. Tap either outlet of your plug to change its name and icon.
  2. Swap between the two outlets
    • Tap Swap to quickly swap the appliances connected to your plug.
  3. Turn on/off status LED
    • Status LED is on by default. If you turn it off, the LED won’t illuminate.
  4. Check feature tutorial

Reset Your Smart Outdoor Plug
There are three methods to reset your Smart Outdoor Plug.

  • Method 1
    • Swipe left either outlet your Smart Outdoor Plug and tap Delete. Then tap Remove Device. Your Smart Outdoor Plug will be removed from your Kasa account and restored to factory settings.
  • Method 2
    • Tap either outlet your Smart Outdoor Plug and go to the Devices Settings page. Then tap Remove Device in the bottom. Your Smart Outdoor Plug will be removed from your Kasa account and restored to factory settings.
  • Method 3
    • Press and hold the either of control buttons of your Smart Outdoor Plug for 10s to restore it to factory default settings.
    • Press and hold for 5s will reset its Wi-Fi connection while keeping previous configurations.

Create Groups
With groups, you can control multiple devices simultaneously. This page allows you to add the outlets of your Smart Outdoor Plug and/or your other Kasa smart devices to a group for unified management.

Create a group

  1. Tap the button in the Home page of the Kasa Smart app, and select Group.
  2. Select the outlets of your plug and other and tap Save.

  4. The created group is listed in the Home page. You can tap ON or OFF to turn on or off the devices together in the group.

Manage the group

  1. Tap the group you want to manage.
  2. Turn on or off the Group in the status page.

  4. Tap Remove Group if you want to remove the group from your device list. Then double confirm it. All devices in the group will remain accessible on the device list. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(27\)

Create Scenes
A scene is a preset group of smart devices that can be programmed, customized and activated simultaneously at the touch of a button from your smartphone or tablet, allowing you to easily set your mood, activity or fit any special occasion. This page allows you to preset how your smart home devices should act automatically at a specific occasion.

  1. Tap at the bottom, then select a scene or create your own scene.
    E.g. I want to turn on outdoor light and turn off outdoor light strip with one tap.

  2. Select devices for the scene to work on and set their status respectively. Here we choose the two outlets of your plug.

  4. Name your scene.

  5. Tap Save. Then your scene is created successfully.

  6. Your scene is displayed in the scene list. Just tap the scene to activate it. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(29\)

Smart Actions

  • Smart Actions is a function that enables device interconnections and home automations. With Smart Actions, your Kasa devices can work together to create a smarter smart home. From the moment you wake up to the moment you drift asleep,
  • Smart Actions make your home safer and more comfortable.
      • At most three smart actions can be enabled at the same time.
  1. Tap at the bottom, then tap Add  an Action.
  2. Select an automation type for your Smart Actions.tp-link-EP40-Outd

Configure Motion Sensing If you already have a Kasa Smart Camera E.g. I want to turn the outdoor light on when my Kasa camera senses a motion.

  1. Tap Motion Sensing then select a camera.
  2. Select an outlet of your Smart Outdoor Plug. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(32\)
  3. Set the time for the actions. You can choose Always or tap Custom to choose time according to your needs. E.g. I want the motion to trigger the outdoor light on from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM every day. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(33\)
  4. (Optional) Set an auto-off timer then tap Complete. Then your outdoor light will be turned off after the time you set if no motion is detected. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(34\)
  5. Name your action for easy identification.

  7. Configure Control With a Switch If you already have a Kasa Smart Switch

E.g. I want to turn the outdoor light on when I turn on my switch, and turn the light off when I turn off the switch.

  1. Tap Control With a Switch.
  2. Add a Kasa smart switch. Then select an outlet of your Smart Outdoor Plug. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(36\)
  3. Name your action for easy identification.

Configure Schedule a Scene
E.g. I want to turn on the scene I have created automatically at scheduled time.

  1. Tap Schedule a Scene.
  2. Select a scene you have created tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(38\)
  3. Set the time and frequency at which you want your scene to be turned on .
  4. Name your action for easy identification. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(39\)
  5. Now Your Smart Action is created successfully and displayed in the Smart Actions list.

Configure Auto-Off Timer

E.g. I want to turn off my outdoor light after 30 minutes when it is turned on.

  1. Tap Auto-Off Timer then select an outlet your Smart Outdoor Plug. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(41\)

  3. Name your action for easy identification.

Voice & Third-Party Support

  • Use the Kasa Smart app to pair your Smart Outdoor Plug with Amazon Alexa or Google Home Assistant, and enjoy a full hands-free experience. Kasa helps manage the rest of your smart home too, working with Samsung SmartThings to trigger changes when you arrive home or leave for the day.
  • Launch the Kasa Smart app. Go to the sidebar and tap Works with Kasa. You can choose Amazon Alexa / Google Assistant / IFTTT / Samsung SmartThings for detailed instructions.

Set up Amazon Alexa

  1. Tap Amazon Alexa.
  2. Tap Connect.

  4. After sign-in, tap LINK.
  5. Your TP-Link ID has been successfully linked with your amazon account. You can use Alexa voice commands to control your Smart Outdoor Plug. tp-link-EP40-Outdoor-Smart-Plug-User- \(46\)

  1. Tap Google Assistant.
