Macro Focusing Rail

Model FRM-7L shown

You’re on steady ground®

INTRODUCTION

Thank you for choosing Oben

The Oben Macro Focusing Rail provides a stable mounting platform for a camera and lens, and is designed for precise camera-to-subject focusing. Both rails are built for macro photography or exacting close-up work.

The rail delivers front-to-back control of a macro lens whether the rail is mounted on a tripod or used as a stand-alone tabletop accessory. Stacking two rails together produces side-to-side aiming control that’s calibrated in miniscule increments.

 WARNINGS

Warnings:

  • Please read and follow these instructions, and keep this manual in a safe place.
  • Do not attempt to attach the focusing rail to a tripod with the camera attached.
  • Remove the camera and lens from the focusing rail during setup and transport.

Mounting

MOUNTING THE RAIL TO AN ARCA-TYPE BALLHEAD

  1. Remove the feet by unscrewing them.
  2. Remove the ball head’s quick release lock.
  3. Place the macro rail down into the clamp, and tighten the quick release lock until it’s secure.

ATTACHING THE MACRO RAIL DIRECTLY TO A TRIPOD OR NONARCA BALLHEAD

Screw the macro rail directly onto the tripod’s or ball head plate’s threaded stud. If the tripod head has a 3/8-16 mounting stud, remove the reducer bushing from the rail’s socket.

MOUNT A CAMERA OR LENS TO THE RAIL

The Arca-type quick release plate has a 1/4-20 mounting screw that attaches to most cameras.

For cameras with a 3/8-16 mounting socket, screw a reducer bushing onto the camera’s socket.

  1. Screw the quick release plate into the camera or lens collar.
  2. Place the camera/ plate assembly into the rail’s mounting platform. Make sure the plate sits flush against the bottom of the platform, and the clamp locks around the quick-release plate’s grooves.
  3. Tighten the quick release knob until the plate is secure in the clamp.
Operating the FRM-7L and FRM-4S

FRONT-TO-BACK ADJUSTMENT

Set the distance from the subject by turning the distance adjustment knob.

Fine-tune the distance with the fine-tune knob.

For precise distance adjustment with a heavy lens, increase the friction by tightening the drag adjustment knob. For smaller and lighter lenses, decrease the drag by loosening the knob.

Note the location of the position pin on the side scale to duplicate the setup

PAN ADJUSTMENT

The mounting platform can pan 360°.

Loosen the pan lock and turn the platform to 90°. Tighten the pan lock to ensure the camera and lens won’t slip out of position.

SIDE-TO-SIDE ADJUSTMENT

Stack the FRM-4S on top of the FRM-7L for side-to side camera adjustment.

  1. Loosen the FRM-7L’s pan lock, and rotate the platform so it’s panned at a 90° angle. Then tighten the pan lock.
  2. Remove the feet from the FRM-4S. Remove the quick-release plate from the F R M-7 L .
  3. Place the FRM-4S’s base into the FRM-7L’s mounting platform, and tighten the quick release knob.
  4. Use the FRM-4S’s adjustment knob for side-to-side movement. Use the FRM-7L’s adjustment knob for back-to-front movement.

STAND-ALONE TABLETOP USE

The rails include four legs with nonslip rubber pads for traction on highly polished surfaces.

Screw in the legs, and place the rail on a flat surface.
