EtherWAN ED3501 Industrial Ethernet Extender
Product Information
The ED3501 Series is an Industrial 10/100BASE-TX Ethernet Extender manufactured by EtherWAN Systems, Inc. It is designed to extend Ethernet connections over long distances using voice grade copper wire. The extender features LED indicators for power, link/activity, remote/local mode, symmetric/asymmetric mode, and line speed. It supports data rates of up to 100Mbps and is suitable for installations in desktops or chassis.
Product Usage Instructions
-
Unpacking: Unpack the items and ensure that your package includes one ED3501 Industrial Ethernet Extender and an external AC to DC power adapter. If any items are missing or damaged, notify your EtherWAN representative. Keep the carton and packing material for future use.
-
Select a Location: Choose a suitable location for installation. The extender should be placed in a dry area with ambient temperature, away from exhausts, hot-air vents, heaters, and sources of electromagnetic noise. Ensure there is adequate airflow around the device. Keep the extender at least 6 ft (1.83 m) away from photocopy machines or other sources of electromagnetic noise.
-
LED Indicators: The extender features various LED indicators that provide information about power status, link/activity, remote/local mode, symmetric/asymmetric mode, and
line speed. Refer to the user manual for detailed explanations of each LED indicator. -
Connection: Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to a switch port and the other end to the Ethernet port of the ED3501 extender. To connect two Ethernet extenders together,
insert a voice grade copper wire between one pair of Ethernet Extenders via the Ethernet Extender port (RJ-11 connector or Terminal Block). Ensure that one device is set to LOC mode and the other to Auto mode when connecting two devices. -
DIP Switch Settings: The extender has DIP switches that allow you to configure settings such as mode (Auto, Local), symmetry (Symmetric, Asymmetric), and performance (Performance, Standard). After making changes to the position of any DIP switch, the extender must be rebooted for the new settings to take effect.
-
Apply Power: Connect the supplied AC to DC power adapter to the receptacle on the rear panel of the extender. Then, attach the plug into a standard AC outlet.

Connection
- Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into a switch port.
- Connect the other end into the Ethernet port of the device.
- Insert the voice grade copper wire between one pair of Ethernet Extenders via Ethernet Extender port (RJ-11 connector or Terminal Block). One device must be set to LOC mode and the other to Auto mode when two devices are connected.
Distance and data rates for Ethernet Extender ports:
Distance (m) | Data Rate (Mbps) |
---|---|
300 | 100 |
400 | 80 |
600 | 60 |
800 | 40 |
2600 | 1 |
This distance/data rate information is measured according to testing standards in the EtherWAN laboratory. The actual installation and connection speed will be affected by the quality of copper wire and the impact of noise disturbance.
DIP Switch Settings
Pin | Up | Down |
---|---|---|
DIP Switch 1 | Auto mode | Local mode |
DIP Switch 2 | Symmetric | Asymmetric |
DIP Switch 2 | Performance | Standard |
NOTE: After making changes to the position of any DIP switch, the Ethernet Extender must be rebooted for the new settings to take effect.
Ethernet Extender Connection
- RJ-11 and Terminal Block port pinouts
- Pin 3 : Tip,
- Pin 4 : Ring.
- Use a telephone line to connect two RJ-11 or Terminal Block ports between two Ethernet Extenders.
Apply Power
Connect the supplied AC to DC power adaptor to the receptacle on the rear panel of the Ethernet Extender, and then attach the plug into a standard AC outlet.
