Applications

Designed to provide high performance in a very compact footprint, the FAP40T appeals to both system designers and architects. FAP40T is ideal for high- intelligibility voice, music, and signal reproduction in commercial, industrial, and institutional applications.

General Description

A unique, patented tap selector switch design allows for easy system tuning. A full selection of taps up to 16 Watts as well as an 8Ω transformer bypass setting is included for maximum system versatility. This switch “knob” also functions as a diffuser cone, providing smooth, even dispersion of the high- frequency content from the center of the 4″ polypropylene driver. In fact, the high-frequency response of the FAP40T is so natural that many would assume that the driver in the FAP40T was a coaxial design instead of a single cone driver.

Low-frequency response is enhanced by the tuned and ported enclosure design. The enclosure (UL1480 Listed) is constructed of high-impact injection-molded plastic and includes a press-fit grille design that blends well with contemporary architecture.

A two-pole terminal strip housed below a removable metal cover on the back of the FAP40T enclosure allows for easy system wiring as well as “daisy chain” wiring to other FAP40Ts or even FAPSUB subwoofers (a great combination).

Mounting Accessories

• Tile Bridge: Included in the package for suspended ceiling applications. The lightweight design of the FAP40T, coupled with the “Dog Leg” mounting system, allows the FAP40T to mount into most drywall ceilings without the need for a separate mounting ring.
• FA-TR4 Trim Ring (Optional): For new construction drywall ceiling applications, the optional FA-TR4 trim ring is available. This unit provides a marked location for drywall installers to cut around, essentially reserving the desired location in the ceiling until the final installation of FAP40T. Mounting holes are provided to accommodate 16″ or 24″ OC stud/joist mounting.
• Press-Fit Grille: The package includes an attractive press-fit grille that nicely matches contemporary architecture.
• Support Ring: A support ring is also provided on the top of the FAP40T enclosure to facilitate an auxiliary support cable. It is recommended that this secondary support be utilized in drop ceilings for safety and seismic considerations.

Architect & Engineer Specifications

• The loudspeaker system shall be the Atlas Sound FAP40T, comprising a high-performance 4″ loudspeaker, ported bass reflex enclosure, and press-fit grille designed for conventional ceiling installation.
• The system’s frequency response shall be 100Hz – 12kHz (±3dB), with an extended range of 80Hz – 15kHz (±5dB). Sensitivity shall average 87dB.
• The loudspeaker shall feature a 4″ cone-type driver constructed of polypropylene with a butyl rubber surround. The magnet shall have a minimum weight of 13oz (368.5g), and the voice coil diameter shall be 1″ (25mm).
• The transformer shall be of the 70.7V / 100V type with primary taps of 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 watts (@70.7V) and a front-mounted tap selector switch. This switch shall include a transformer bypass setting for direct coupling of the 8Ω FAP40T driver with low impedance amplifiers.
• The enclosure shall be constructed of injection-molded plastic and have an internal volume of 85 in3 (1.4L). To facilitate conduit system connections, an access panel shall cover a recessed terminal cup, providing a 7/8″ (22mm inside diameter) hole for top access.
• External wiring shall be accommodated via a two-pole terminal strip with screw-down terminals for secure wire termination.
• The system shall include a tile bridge assembly designed for use with either 2′ x 4′ (609mm x 1219mm) or 2′ x 2′ (609mm x 609mm) suspended ceiling tiles to reinforce the ceiling material.
• Overall front face diameter shall not exceed 73/8″ (187mm), and the overall height shall not exceed 71/8″ (181mm).
• Grilles shall be press-fit, constructed from 24-gauge perforated steel mesh, and finished in white epoxy. The round grille shall measure 51/2″ (140mm) in diameter.

Mounting Instructions

Installation Steps

1. Preparation:
   • Determine the desired location for the speaker. Ensure that there are no electrical wires, plumbing, or other obstacles behind the ceiling where you intend to mount the speaker.
2. Cutting the Ceiling Hole:
   • Use the included template (or the speaker grill) to trace a circle on the ceiling.
   • Before cutting, double-check the area for any obstacles.
   • Using a saw, carefully cut out the traced circle.
3. Speaker Wiring:
   • Strip the ends of your speaker wire, ensuring you have enough exposed wire to make a secure connection.
   • Identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the speaker. Typically, red is positive and black is negative.
   • Connect the speaker wire to the two-pole terminal strip on the back of the FAP40T, ensuring the right polarity.
4. Mounting the Speaker:
   • Carefully insert the FAP40T speaker into the cut-out hole.
   • Tighten any included clamps or screws to secure the speaker in place. Do not overtighten; this could damage the speaker or the ceiling.
5. Attach the Grille:
   • Once the speaker is secured, press-fit the grill into place. It should fit snugly.
6. Final Testing:
   • Turn the power back on and play audio through the speaker to ensure it’s working correctly and that the sound is clear.
   • If any adjustments to the angle or position of the speaker are needed, turn off the power and make them before retesting.

Post-Installation Tips:

• Regularly check the mounting and connections for any signs of wear or loosening.
• Clean the grill periodically with a soft cloth to remove dust or debris.
