carbatec Sierra Twist Pen Kit
Product Information
The Sierra Twist Pen Kit is a high-quality pen kit that allows you to create your own custom pens. The kit includes all the necessary components for assembling a pen, including a twist mechanism, refill, spring tip assembly, clip assembly, brass tube, and finished barrel.
Required Accessories
- Cyanoacrylate (glue)
Product Components
- Twist Mechanism: The mechanism that allows the pen to be opened and closed by twisting.
- Refill: The ink refill for the pen.
- Spring Tip Assembly: The assembly that holds the refill in place.
- Clip Assembly: The assembly that attaches the clip to the pen barrel.
- Brass Tube: The tube that serves as the core of the pen.
- Finished Barrel: The outer part of the pen that is turned from wood or an acrylic blank.
Product Usage Instructions
Preparing and Turning the Blank
- Cut one blank to the length of the brass tube plus approximately 2 mm. The grain should run lengthwise.
- Drill a 27/64 diameter centered hole lengthwise through the blank. Take care to avoid excessive pressure to prevent wandering or splitting of the blank.
- Glue the brass tube into the blank using epoxy or a gap filling cyanoacrylate. Spread the glue on the tube and insert it into the blank with a twisting motion to evenly distribute the glue. Center the tube lengthwise in the blank and allow the glue to dry. Remove any glue residue from the tube.
- Square the ends of the blank using a barrel trimmer to remove excess wood and finish flush with the ends of the brass tube.
Turning the Blanks
- Mount the blank on a mandrel, ensuring it is securely tightened without causing damage or bending to the mandrel.
- Turn down the blank to a diameter slightly larger than the bushings, taking care not to go too far since the wood is thin above the brass tube.
- Sand the blanks progressively from lower to higher grits of sandpaper while the blank is spinning. Start with 150 grit and progress to 600 grit.
Finishing
Apply a finish of your choice to the pen barrel. Be cautious with finishes like polyurethane, as they may cause the pen and mandrel parts to stick together. Some finishes can be applied with a rag while turning the barrel on a lathe.
Pen Assembly
- Line up the finished parts according to Fig. 2.
- Slide the spring onto the refill and place it inside the tip assembly. Screw the pen mechanism into the tip assembly.
- Press the clip assembly into the upper end of the barrel.
- Push the pen tube with cap assembly onto the completed lower part.
- The pen is now ready to operate. Twist clockwise to open.
REQUIRED ACCESSORIES
- 7 mm pen mandrel
- Sierra bushing set BUSH-SIE
- 27/64″ drill bit PK-2764
- Barrel trimmer
- 2 part epoxy glue or CA super glue (cyanoacrylate)
- Wood or acrylic blank, minimum size 5/8″ x 2 1/2″
- Sanding and finishing supplies
PREPARING AND TURNING THE BLANK
- Cutting the wood or acrylic blank
- Cut one blank to the length of the brass tube plus approximately 2 mm.
- (Approx. 63.5 + 2 mm). Grain should run lengthwise.
- Drilling the blank
- Drill a 27/64″ diameter centered hole lengthwise through the blank. Excessive pressure will cause the drill bit to wander and/or split the blank. Slow the feed rate and back the bit out repeatedly for chip removal.
- Gluing the brass tube into the blank
- Use epoxy or a gap filling cyanoacrylate. Spread the glue on the tube. Insert into the blank with a twisting motion to spread the glue evenly inside. Centre the tube lengthwise in the blank. Allow the glue to dry. Remove all glue residue from the tube.
- Squaring the ends of the blank
- Use a barrel trimmer to turn away the excess wood to finish flush with the ends of the brass tube.
- Turning the blanks
- Mount the bushings and the blank on the mandrel as shown in figure 3.
- Thread on the knurled nut and hand tighten to hold all the components in place.
- Slide the tailstock up snugly against the mandrel shaft inserting the live center point into the mandrel dimple, lock in place.
- Hand tighten the quill adjustment to firm up the mandrel. (DO NOT overtighten, it could damage or bend the mandrel.
- Using sharp tools, turn the blank down close to the bushing diameter. Turn the blanks down to a diameter slightly larger than the bushings. As you approach the final size be careful since the wood is only about 1 mm thick above the brass tube.
- Sanding the blanks
- As with any sanding, progress through a range of lower to higher grits of sand paper. Sand with blank spinning. Progress from 150 through to 600 grit paper.
- Finishing
- Try a finish of your choice but be careful with finishes such as polyurethane as there is a risk of the pen and mandrel parts sticking together. Some finishes can be applied with a rag whilst turning the barrel on the lathe.
PEN ASSEMBLY
- Line up finished parts according to figure 2.
- Slide the spring onto the refill and place inside the tip assembly. Screw the pen mechanism into the tip assembly.
- Press the clip assembly into the upper end of the barrel.
- Push the pen tube with cap assembly onto completed lower part.
- The pen is now ready to operate. Twist clockwise to open.
