This temperature rise does not occur when the instrument is connected to a wall outlet or when it is powered by batteries.
Response Time
Response time is the time required for e.m.f. to reach 63% of its total
variation when the thermocouple is subjected to a temperature step. The
sensor’s response time depends on the heat capacity of the medium and the
thermal conductivity of the sensor. The response time of a thermocouple with
good thermal conductivity, immersed in a medium of high heat capacity, will be
short. Conversely, in air or another thermally unfavorable medium, the true
response time can be 100 times or more longer than the thermocouple response
time.
