How it works

Get to know your system

When the sun rises, it sends rays of energy to your home. It shines on your solar panels, creating clean, affordable energy to keep you powered up day and night.

How it works

Harnessing the sun’s power

The more panels you have, the more power you get! If your system produces more energy than you use, this extra energy charges the battery, giving you energy for use at night and during load-shedding.

What’s installed

The picture shows key components of the GoSolr installation, with the exception of the solar panels mounted on your roof.

  1. Main distribution board
  2. Existing meter
  3. Inverter
  4. Battery (there may have several batteries or a different model)
  5. DC junction box
  6. AC junction box
  7. Battery disconnectors

What’s installed

  1. Main distribution board
The main distribution board takes electricity from the grid and feeds it through to your house.

  2. Existing meter
The device in your home that measures the amount of electricity consumed.

  3. Inverter
The inverter is the brain of the GoSolr installation. It manages your load (or consumption), the production from the solar panels, input from the grid, and use of the battery

The inverter

A. Shows the flow from the solar panels to the inverter. The value will be between 0 and the installed capacity of your GoSolr system.
B. Shows the flow between the grid (Eskom) and the inverter. A positive flow indicates that power is drawn from the grid. A negative flow indicates that power is fed into the grid.
C. Shows the flow between the inverter and the battery(ies). A negative flow indicates that the battery(ies) is charging, and a positive value indicates battery(ies) discharging.
D. Shows the consumption in your home – the value will always be equal to or above 0.

All flows are live and show you what’s happening while you’re looking at the screen. (On the app on your phone, the data is typically delayed by 5-10 minutes).

What’s installed

Battery

When your GoSolr system produces more energy than you consume, this excess energy charges the battery(ies), providing you with clean energy at night and during load-shedding. How long your battery(ies) lasts really depends on your consumption and how many batteries you have, but as long as you’re mindful of your consumption, you’ll have enough power to cover a 2.5-hour load-shedding cycle. You can change your battery settings directly in the GoSolr webapp or by contacting our support team.

There are 3 setting options:

  1. Max safety
We keep the battery 90% full at any given time and allow grid charge to top-up the batteries should the sun not be sufficient.

  2. Balanced
Balanced between managing the load, production and battery charge/discharge to give you as much value from the installation as possible, while still giving you protection against load-shedding.

  3. Economical
This economical setting is designed to give you the maximum value (in terms of kWh produced) from the solar PV system.

Battery disconnectors

Battery disconnect switches are designed to cut-off electrical power and help protect against electrical fires and theft. Please do not touch these

What’s installed

DC junction box

The DC junction box is placed between the solar panels and the inverter and consists of a few breakers as well as surge protection.
The surge protection is there to protect the inverter against a surge from the panels, while the breakers are used for the power coming from the solar panels.

AC junction box
The AC junction box is placed between the inverter and your electrical appliances.

A. Surge protector
This protects your appliances from surges caused by the system and protects the system from surges caused by your appliances.

B. Eskom light
When the light is on, it means that the grid is available. When it is off, it’s either due to a power outage (or load-shedding), or because there is a technical issue with the system.

C. Inverter input
This controls the power from the grid to the inverter. If it’s off, the load of the house cannot be supplied by the grid and you’ll be relying on the battery and the solar panels.

D. Main switch
This turns off the solar PV system completely.

E. Changeover
With this switch, you can choose if the power should be supplied from grid (put the changeover onto Eskom) or the inverter (put the changeover onto Inverter). To benefit from the solar PV system, the changeover needs to be on Inverter.

F. Inverter output
This controls the flow from the inverter to the backed-up appliances in your home.

G. Inverter light
The indication light shows whether the solar PV system is operational or not.

How support works

Powered by the sun empowered by us

We believe in powering your home and empowering you. So, if you experience loss of power or are concerned that your system isn’t operating as it should, take a look at the sticker on your inverter. It has simple, self-help steps that will often resolve the issue.

Start with this

Has a breaker tripped?
Try switching the breaker back up.

No breaker has tripped
Check if the Eskom light is on in your DB board. If it’s load-shedding and your battery is out, wait until the power is back on.

No breaker has tripped and it’s not load-shedding
Flip the changeover switch from inverter to Eskom and give us a call.

Feel free to reach out

If that doesn’t sort things out, feel free to contact our support team. Our support expert will guide you over the phone. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, we’ll send a team to you. As long as the callout is related to the GoSolr installation, this is a free service to you.
There is a callout fee of R650 if the issue is unrelated to the GoSolr installation.
