Product Usage Instructions

  1. Getting to Know Your Wheelchair: Familiarize yourself with the various components of your wheelchair, including the attendant handle, armrests, brake lever, stepper bar, hand rim, rear wheel release, hand brake, caster wheel, seat handle armrest fold lever, heel strap, footplate, and footplate release lever.
  2. Important Safety Information: Before operating the wheelchair, read and understand all safety information provided. Ensure you are physically capable of operating the wheelchair safely. Consult your doctor if you have any health conditions or are taking medications that may affect your ability to operate the wheelchair.
  3. Mounting & Dismounting Safely: When mounting or dismounting the wheelchair, make sure the brakes are locked. Position the wheelchair close to the seat you are transferring from. Fold up or remove the footplates and transfer onto the seat surface carefully. Seek assistance until you are confident in transferring independently.
  4. Moving Safely: Obey local pedestrian and traffic rules while using the wheelchair. Be cautious as others may have difficulty seeing you. Wait for a clear path before proceeding and consider using safety equipment such as reflectors/reflective clothing, lights, and safety flags.

Important Safety Information

Before you operate your wheelchair, please read and understand all of the information provided for your safety. As with operating any wheelchair, only propel yourself with full alertness to ensure safety. Please observe the warnings below to avoid any damage or injury resulting from improper use of your wheelchair. You are responsible for taking proper safety measures and we will not be held liable for personal injury and/ or product damage resulting from improper use of the wheelchair.

  • Please consult your doctor routinely to ensure there are no health or physical conditions that may limit or impair your ability to safely operate your wheelchair.
  • Consult your doctor if you are taking prescription or over-the-counter medications to see if any side effects may limit or impair your ability to safely operate your wheelchair.
  • Do not operate your wheelchair while you are under the influence of alcohol, as this may impair your ability to operate it safely.
  • Do not use the wheelchair other than for its original purpose. Avoid any use, such as weight training, sports, athletics, hauling, moving or towing anything, that may lead to safety hazards and undue stress on the wheelchair.
  • Your wheelchair is designed for one person only. Do not carry passengers.
  • We strongly recommend that you do not smoke cigarettes while seated on your wheelchair. You must adhere to the following safety guidelines if you decide to smoke cigarettes while seated on your wheelchair: Do not leave lit cigarettes unattended. Keep ashtrays at a safe distance from the seat covers. Always make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished before disposal.
  • Be aware that washing of any upholstered items may reduce the fabric’s fire resistance.
  • Replace worn or damaged upholstery immediately to reduce the risk of flammability.
  • Do not modify your wheelchair. For any accessories, please contact an approved company for installation.
  • The addition of accessories to your wheelchair may change certain specifications such as overall weight, size, and /or the centre of gravity. Please take note of how some of the changes may damage any objects around you.
  • To prevent the wheelchair from rolling uncontrollably on its own, lock the breaks on any incline or decline.
  • Keep yourself, clothing, and all other objects away from the wheels while moving. Do not allow any objects to drag behind the wheelchair when moving. Loose-fitting clothing or other objects can get caught in the wheels.

Mounting & Dismounting Safely

  • To safely mount and dismount your wheelchair always make sure the brakes are locked on, if you fail to do so you may move unexpectedly.
  • Move your wheelchair as close as you can to the seat you are transferring from.
  • Fold up or remove foot plates and transfer as far back onto the seat surface as you can, this will reduce the risk that you will miss the seat or fall.
  • The full correct transfer method varies based on your personal circumstances so work with your health care professional to learn how to position your body and how to support yourself during a transfer.
  • We also advise you have someone help you until you are sure you can safely transfer on your own.

Moving Safely

  • Always obey all of the local pedestrian and traffic rules. It may be difficult for others to see you when you are seated on your wheelchair. Wait until your path is clear of traffic, and then proceed with extreme caution. Use of safety equipment such as reflectors/reflective clothing, lights, and safety flags is advisory.
  • Every wheelchair is different. Take the time to learn the feel of this wheelchair before operating.
  • Get to know the areas where you plan to use wheelchair. Look for hazards and learn how to avoid them.
  • To prevent tipping reduce your speed when turning and do not make any sharp turns. Always maintain a stable centre of gravity while turning and avoid shifting your weight in the opposite direction of a turn.
  • Do not travel up or down potentially hazardous surfaces and/or inclines, including but not limited to areas covered with snow, ice, cut grass, or wet leaves.
  • Avoid any change of position or movement that may change your centre of gravity while the wheelchair is moving.

When operating your wheelchair always be aware of the following:

  • Doorways
    Never use the sides of a doorway to pull yourself through. The safest way is to line up square to the door with both hands on your rims, ensure you have ample space each side and then proceed.

  • Leaning
    Do not lean over the side of your wheelchair. Always be careful when leaning backwards and ensure you are in full control if you ever tip your wheelchair backwards.

  • Inclines
    Never turn on an incline to avoid tipping. Avoid stopping on an incline. Do not exceed the maximum safe incline of the wheelchair.

  • Kerbs
    Whenever possible get help from an attendant when mounting kerbs. Avoid hard impacts when descending kerbs.

  • Stairs
    Alwayss use two or more assistants. Tilt the wheelchair to its point of balance. One assistants (from behind) holds the wheelchair against the first step and safely lifts up. The second assistant (in front) lifts from a fixed part of the frame to above the stair height and holds it while the first assistant moves up one step. Repeat one step at a time until both assistants safely reach the summit of the stairs.

Safe Transportation

When transporting your wheelchair always be aware of the following:

  • Do not use your wheelchair as a seat in any motor vehicle.
  • Always secure the wheelchair when it is being transported.
  • Never transport the wheelchair in the front seat of a vehicle as it may move and distract the driver.
  • Never sit on your wheelchair while it is in a moving vehicle.
  • Do not tow your wheelchair with a car. Towing may exceed the maximum speed threshold, resulting in damage to critical components of the wheelchair.

Folding & Unfolding

Unfolding

  1. Stand behind your wheelchair
  2. Press the back fold/unfold lever inwards and lift the attendant handle up one side at a time
  3. Holding the armrests, pull outwards
  4. pointing your fingers inwards with the palm of your hand on the frame, push down until the seat is fully lowered. Make sure the frame is firmly seated in its holder
  5. Flip the footplates down

Folding

  1. Swing up the footplates
  2. Using the canvas handles each side of the seat lift upwards
  3. Press the back fold/unfold lever inwards and push down the attendant handle one side at a time
  4. Folding is now completed

Seatbelt Fitting & Adjustment
This wheelchair is not fitted with a seatbelt.

Daily Checks

Check the following items before using your wheelchair. If you find anything abnormal or that you are unsure of contact the company you purchased from for further advice or inspection before using your wheelchair.

Wheels

  • Ensure there are no cracks or deformities on the tyres of your wheelchair
  • Ensure the wheels rotate without wobbling
  • Ensure there are no foreign objects in the tyre treads
  • Ensure there is no excessive or uneven wear to the tyre tread
  • Ensure there are no unusual noises coming from your wheelchair

Seat

  • Ensure there is no unusual movement
  • Ensure the upholstery is not excessively worn

Brakes

  • Ensure the brakes stop the wheelchair from moving when locked
  • Ensure the brake levers move with no obstruction and apply the brakes when pulled

Cleaning, Maintenance & Disposal

Cleaning
To clean your wheelchair, use a soft brush to remove any dirt or dust and use a damp cloth and soft detergent to wipe all surfaces clean. Allow your wheelchair to dry naturally.

  • Do not use a hose pipe, jet wash or splash water directly onto your wheelchair
  • Do not use abrasive or scouring materials or liquids when cleaning

Maintenance
Ensure the daily checks are made on your wheelchair. Apart from cleaning and daily checks it is recommended that all maintenance is completed by an approved company.

Disposal
It is recommended that your wheelchair is disposed of through an approved company. For more information contact the company you purchased from.
