Welcome to SONUSCORE MEDIEVAL PHRASES LUTE & THEORBO. This HALion instrument enables you to integrate expressive Lute & Theorbo phrases into your compositions.

Download & Installation

Please follow these steps to set up the library

  1. Download: Please note that the sound library components are huge. Depending on your internet connection, the downloads can take a considerable amount of time.
  2. Installation: HALion Sonic SE 3 is included in Cubase 9.5 or later. If you have installed Cubase 9.5, HALion Sonic SE 3 is already installed and only needs to be updated if necessary.

Please note that a valid license is required to use this sound library. The Medieval Phrases Lute & Theorbo license includes alicense for HALion Sonic SE 3. If you want to use this library with HALion 6 or HALion Sonic 3, make sure that the corresponding license is available on your system.

Medieval Phrases Lute & Theorbo
On the main page, you can select a theme and access all the basic functions you need to get started.

Theme Selection Bar
On the left side of the main page are 10 Lute themes and 5 Theorbo themes that you can choose from. Bonus themes marked with * change the root key range to the available keys. Your theme selection is reflected on the keyboard in the octave above C5.

Phrase System
Each theme consists of five complete phrases. You can play the opening, middle, and endings of each phrase and combine them freely to create new phrases. Short endings are provided to take you back to the root at any time. The phrases are performed with a 4/4 and 6/8 feel.

Keyswitches
You can use the highlighted keys to play the phrases and combine them freely.

Phrase Progress Bar
The Phrase Progress Bar shows the waveform of the current phrase and the playback position of the phrase. You can adjust the playback start of the current phrase by dragging the left start icon.

Page Selection
On the bottom of the GUI, you can find the Main and FX page buttons. Use those to navigate between the two pages.

Sync Mode & Free Mode
In Free Mode, the phrases are not synced to the DAW. Choose this mode for the natural feel of the phrases as intended by the musician. The speed knob allows you to change the playback speed of the phrases to fit your track. In Sync Mode, the timing of the phrases automatically syncs to the host tempo of your DAW.

DOWNLOAD & INSTALLATION

Please follow these steps to set up the library

  • Download and install the Steinberg Download Assistant if you haven’t You can find it at www.steinberg.net.
  • Open the Steinberg Download Assistant and click on the requested Medieval Phrases Lute & Theorbo sound library.
  • This library can only be used with a compatible version of HALion, HALion Sonic or HALion Sonic SE. Therefore, before you proceed and start to install the sound library content, please make sure you have installed the latest version HALion 6, HALion Sonic 3 or HALion Sonic SE You can get the latest updates from here www.steinberg.net.
  • You don’t have HALion 6, HALion Sonic 3 or HALion Sonic SE 3 installed? Both HALion 6 and HALion Sonic 3 are available from steinberg.net.
  • If you don’t have HALion 6 or HALion Sonic 3, you can use HALion Sonic SE 3. In the Steinberg Download Assistant, the HALion Sonic 3 SE installer can be found in the VST instruments & Plugins column.

Please note: HALion Sonic SE 3 is also included in Cubase 9.5 or later. So if you have installed Cubase 9.5, HALion Sonic SE 3 is already installed and, if necessary, only needs to be updated.

Download

  • Define the installation path in the ‘Target folder:’ field above the components list. It is recommended to store the downloads at a location where you want the sound library files to be placed permanently. Due to their size, moving the downloaded library components later takes additional time.
  • Once the download and installation path is set, download the sound library components via Steinberg Download Assistant. To do so, click on ‘Download’ in the corresponding lines in the list of components in the Steinberg Download Assistant.

Please note that the sound library components are huge. Depending on your internet connection, the downloads can take a considerable amount of time.

Registration

  • Once all downloads have been completed (green progress bar), click on ‘Open’ in the line of the first library component listed by Steinberg Download Assistant.
  • Steinberg Library Manager, a tool installed along with HALion/HALion Sonic (SE), opens and suggests to register the contained sound files (‘Register VST Sounds’).
  • Click ‘OK’ to proceed and wait for the registration to finish. Please be patient. It can take some until all files have been registered completely.
  • As soon as the Steinberg Library Manager has completed the registration, a window pops up reporting that ‘VST Sounds registered ‘ Click ‘OK’ to confirm.

Please remember that this sound library can only be used with a valid license.

The Medieval Phrases Lute & Theorbo license includes a license for HALion Sonic SE 3. If you want to use this library with HALion 6 or HALion Sonic 3, please make sure that the corresponding license is available on your system, too.

SYNC MODE & FREE MODE

  • In Free Mode, the phrases are not synced to the DAW. Choose this mode if you want the natural feel of the phrases as the musician intended them. The speed knob allows you to change the playback speed of the phrases to fit your track. It dials from a minimum of 50% up to 150% of the original speed.
  • In Sync Mode the timing of the phrases automatically sync to the host tempo of your DAW. 1x means normal playback speed. 2x will playback the phrase at double time.

  • EQ ON/OFF: Toggles the equalizer on and off.
  • LOW: Adjusts the gain of the low-frequency band of the equalizer.
  • LOW/MID: Adjusts the gain of the low-mid frequency band of the equalizer.
  • HIGH/MID: Adjusts the gain of the high-mid frequency band of the equalizer.
  • HIGH: Adjusts the gain of the high-frequency band of the equalizer.

  • DELAY ON / OFF : Toggles the delay on and off.
  • SYNC : Sync to host tempo on/off.
  • TIME : If SYNC is turned off you can select the delay time in ms. If SYNC is turned on you can select the delay time in note values.
  • FEEDBACK : Adjusts the FEEDBACK amount of the DELAY effect. Basically, this parameter controls how many times a note will be audible via the DELAY.
  • MIX : Adjusts the MIX level of the DELAY effect.

  • IR MENU : Choose one of seven impulse responses.
  • PREDELAY : Adjusts the PREDELAY of the REVERB effect in ms. This parameter is helpful for simulating distance.
  • MIX : Adjusts the mix level of the REVERB.

When opening the „Medieval Lute“ instrument you have all the controls you need right there in the GUI.

DYNAMICS

  • CC1 (mod wheel): Controls the dynamic of the tremolo. All other articulations react to the note velocity for dynamics.

REVERB

  • REVERB ON / OFF : Toggles the reverb on and off.
  • IR MENU : Choose one of seven impulse responses.
  • MIX : Adjusts the mix level of the REVERB.

Lute Articulations:

  • C0 Pluck
    press the sustain pedal (CC64) for long releases.

  • D0 Tremolo
    use the mod wheel (CC1) for dynamics.

E0 Hammer On  always press two notes:

  • half-tone interval
    • halftone hammer on
  • whole tone interval
    • whole tone hammer on

F0 Pull Off always press two notes:

  • half-tone interval
    • halftone pull off
  • whole tone interval
    • whole tone pull off

G0 Trill  always presses two notes:

  • half-tone interval
    • halftone trill
  • whole tone interval
    • whole tone trill

A0 Arps  always press two notes:

  • minor third/major sixth interval
    • minor chord arp
  • major third/minor sixth interval
    • major chord arp

With this switch you can choose between double time (2x) and normal (1x) playback speed.

B0 Chords always press two notes:

  • minor third/major sixth interval
    minor chord

  • major third/minor sixth interval
    major chord

The current Articulation is always displayed at the bottom.

When opening the „Medieval Theorbo“ instrument you have all the controls you need right there in the GUI.
